The Club at Crazy Horse Ranch
About
The Club at Crazy Horse Ranch (previously known as Salinas Golf & Country Club) in Monterey boasts a reputation as "the friendliest club in the area." Opened in 1925, it's also known as one of the area's oldest clubs though they are loathe to label themselves as "traditional". The golf course sprawls across rolling countryside dotted with mature trees and the occasional water hazard. Originally opened as a nine-hole layout, the golf course may appear somewhat short at just over 6,200 yards from the back tees but don't underestimate its level of difficulty. It's a tight layout that demands accuracy, especially when navigating the small greens. There is plenty of variety at The Club at Crazy Horse Ranch, you may even find yourself using all the clubs in your bag. The golf course finishes with a stunning view of Salinas Valley from an elevated tee. The fairway slopes downhill to a well protected green guarded on the left with trees and on the right with bunkers.

1925 Gem
My friends and I absolutely love playing this private club where accuracy holds a much higher premium than distance. Beautifully surrounded by the Gabilan Mountains and rich farmland, the course winds through the contour of the gently rolling hills. The greens are incredibly quick and true. A quick round played on a very well maintained course at a reasonable price....What's not to like!!
Nice Place, Nice Greens, Fun Golf
Played with a group of 3 who were excellent golfers and nice people. The course is challenging but fun with a wide variety of holes and shot values. Bentgrass greens are excellent quality and the course is in fine condition.
Pro shop staff could have been a little more welcoming but I guess I am not a member--on the other hand it put me off a little since I think they are trying to attract members. Greenskeepers were respectful and friendly.
I have played here before and the clubhouse has a nice barroom and the server is nice.
Overall I like SG&CC and will play there again. You can walk or ride--it is good old fashioned golf without a lot of misery that some new designs boast about. Good place--good golf.
Good track
This course is a good track. Greens are in good shape, ball role good but, they are small. Some greens have small stream in front of them.
Great course for seasoned veterans
You must be a decent player to play at this course. The fairways are narrow. Trees will be troublesome if you hit an errant shot. The greens run fast. There are subtle breaks that are hard to notice. The rough is not too challenging. There are no overgrown areas that will trap your ball. If you keep the ball in the fairway you will have a good chance at a good score. If you don't have good control, the course will punish you.
Nice Little Secret
This venue is awesome! Staff and amenities were excellent. Greens were flawless,, and quick. Start the ball on line and it rolls true. A great test, of your ball striking ability. You do not have to be a long ball striker. A truly, fair and pleasurable test of your game.
Very Nice Course
We had a great day at Salinas Golf and Country Club. Course was in very good shape. We paired up with a couple of locals and that was very helpful. Bring your accuracy. It's pretty tight but very enjoyable.
fast greens
Spectated at this course in the past but had not played it until now. Despite it being a short course, it was still a challenge. The greens were super fast and hard to read the breaks. When I am back in the Salinas area, I will try to play it again. And recommend it to others. Pro shop staff was great.
Hidden Gem
Salinas area folks have one fantastic golf course off the beaten track, per se. With the easier access off Hwy. 101 it only takes minutes from San Jose. A must play!
Enjoyable round
It was challenging as many of the fairways slope to one side or the other, but I enjoyed the challenge and would like to play it again.
Very interesting course
The course is much more challenging than the distance indicates. Very small greens that are in great shape. It is amazing how many trees get in the way even when you hit it straight.
Great greens, great price
Played on a Sunday for $39 at 11:20. Course was wide open. Nobody behind us or in front of us. It's my second time playing here. Perfect greens. Very small greens so your chipping better by on. IMO, best deal out there. Course is worth a lot more than $40. It's not Bayonet or Blackhorse but it's fun and challenging.
a gem set in farm country
a very nice surprise - a country club course without the "exclusive" cc demeanor - go play!
Short but challenging course
I played two rounds of Golf yesterday @ Salinas Country Club, the greens are fast, sloped and difficult, just the way most golfers like them. The course is a little on the short side, but has several skinny fairways and tough smallish greens that make up for the lack of length, and don't get fooled by the distance there are some tough, tough holes on these sloped hills to navigate.
Its a beautiful layout with almost no homes in view/play, only a few holes on the beginning of the back nine.
Playing golf here is Always an enjoyable experience.
One of the best in Salinas
Tight fairways with trees that penalized the wayward shots. Workers there were sometimes fearless!
Never crowded, extremely friendly, challenging but fun course
I have only played here a few times, but each time is an excellent experience. You will truly enjoy your time at this course, from the moment you meet with the excellent staff, to the time you get back to your vehicle at the end of the day. Excellent warm-up area with a full driving range is only the start to a great round. Challenging holes, both long and short, will test all your skills. Several opportunities to score if you can manage your game well, and some holes let you bomb it freely without being too harsh for those slightly off center contacts. Fairways are in great shape, and even the rough can be slightly forgiving. The greens are always excellent, and on my last day were running true, and quick! Great course with even better value for your money. You will not be disappointed!
Nice "old school" design, well maintained and fun to play.
It's not Pebble Beach but it was well designed. Salinas Valley Country Club is an "old school" course that still values shot making without a gorilla drive. The greens are small and simple to read, and very well maintained. The bunkers have good sand and the mature trees present a challenge if you put the ball in the wrong place off the tee.
It was worth the drive from Monterey to play the course. I was surprised that it wasn't busier, finishing in just under four hours.
The course & staff are great!
I was amazed by the friendliness and the time spent explaining the course layout. The greens were fast, clean and challenging. They even have complementary coffee... will definitely go again..
SVG&CC
This is a very nice course, nestled in the fields. Well maintained and not over booked. Great opportunity to try country club golf at a great price.
Short but challenging
Even though it's a short golf courses it's still demand respect. I love the 12th hole par three. Played it three weeks into over-seeding and you can hardly tell. The courses condition was very good and the staff was phenomenal.
