The Club at Crazy Horse Ranch
About
The Club at Crazy Horse Ranch (previously known as Salinas Golf & Country Club) in Monterey boasts a reputation as "the friendliest club in the area." Opened in 1925, it's also known as one of the area's oldest clubs though they are loathe to label themselves as "traditional". The golf course sprawls across rolling countryside dotted with mature trees and the occasional water hazard. Originally opened as a nine-hole layout, the golf course may appear somewhat short at just over 6,200 yards from the back tees but don't underestimate its level of difficulty. It's a tight layout that demands accuracy, especially when navigating the small greens. There is plenty of variety at The Club at Crazy Horse Ranch, you may even find yourself using all the clubs in your bag. The golf course finishes with a stunning view of Salinas Valley from an elevated tee. The fairway slopes downhill to a well protected green guarded on the left with trees and on the right with bunkers.

Never crowded, extremely friendly, challenging but fun course
I have only played here a few times, but each time is an excellent experience. You will truly enjoy your time at this course, from the moment you meet with the excellent staff, to the time you get back to your vehicle at the end of the day. Excellent warm-up area with a full driving range is only the start to a great round. Challenging holes, both long and short, will test all your skills. Several opportunities to score if you can manage your game well, and some holes let you bomb it freely without being too harsh for those slightly off center contacts. Fairways are in great shape, and even the rough can be slightly forgiving. The greens are always excellent, and on my last day were running true, and quick! Great course with even better value for your money. You will not be disappointed!
Nice "old school" design, well maintained and fun to play.
It's not Pebble Beach but it was well designed. Salinas Valley Country Club is an "old school" course that still values shot making without a gorilla drive. The greens are small and simple to read, and very well maintained. The bunkers have good sand and the mature trees present a challenge if you put the ball in the wrong place off the tee.
It was worth the drive from Monterey to play the course. I was surprised that it wasn't busier, finishing in just under four hours.
The course & staff are great!
I was amazed by the friendliness and the time spent explaining the course layout. The greens were fast, clean and challenging. They even have complementary coffee... will definitely go again..
SVG&CC
This is a very nice course, nestled in the fields. Well maintained and not over booked. Great opportunity to try country club golf at a great price.
Short but challenging
Even though it's a short golf courses it's still demand respect. I love the 12th hole par three. Played it three weeks into over-seeding and you can hardly tell. The courses condition was very good and the staff was phenomenal.
The greens on this course are fast and in immaculate condition.
I'm so pleased that the Salinas Valley CC decided to allow the golfing public to play this lovely course. It's not a terribly long golf course at just over 6100 yards but though the course may be missing some longer par 4's it certainly makes up for it with it's small, fast and perfectly maintained greens.
The pro shop staff are always friendly and the members don't seem to mind sharing their course with public golfers. A very charming golf course. Looking forward to my next round at the CC.
Green acres
This is a nice little course stuck out in the middle of nowhere. It plays longer than the listed yardage, thanks to elevation changes and strategically placed mature trees. The greens are very fast, but run true. I will definitely go back. My friend and I got around on a Sunday in under four hours. Of course, this was the first day of football season, so that might have had something to do with it. ;-)
Great Coarse, most importantly it was consitant greens and all.
I really like this coarse. Greens are challanging and fun. But more importantly they are all consitant through out the coarse. Fairways are great and the rough is rough. Its a fun challanging coarse and I always love playing here.
Beautiful setting, wonderful greens
Don't let the short yardage (6,100 from the tips) fool you. With numerous up-hill pins, strategically placed trees, and plenty of OB, this course will challenge even the longest hitters. Greens and fairways are very well maintained, and the weather couldn't have been nicer. Arrive early and take advantage of the very nice putting green and grass driving range. Highly recommend this course, especially at the GolfNow rate.
this course is in great condition to play.
the course is beautifully maintained. little challenge. the green was tuff to read but enjoyed to play from 1st to 18th hole. staff was kind.
super value and the best greens around
I was greeted by a staff member almost as I stepped on the property...inside the proshop another very friendly employee, welcomed me to the course.. let me tell you...these are the best greens , by far, than any I have encountered around this area for public courses..usually the course want sto keep up the pace of play and do not make greens too fast...but these were like greased lightning...the gent in the proshop suggested I practice on the greens for a few minutes..he said that with a chuckle..course is a little short..but still I had alot of fun..scored well...for me..78..great place to play and have some fun...
Great place to play golf in Salinas
This is a beautiful course set in the farmland of Salinas. It is not a long course, but is challenging in that precise shots are required in many places. Non of the difficulty feels forced. There are lots of different kinds of holes, including a wonderful par 3 where the green is several hundred feet below the tee.
The greens are very fast, but the ball rolls true on all of them. Everything is very well maintained.
Small Greens
Overall a nice course. Kind of short with small greens, and tree lined fairways makes for a fun round. They should really thinks about expanding the greens a bit though.
Great course in Salinas
This is a really decent course in Salinas. Surprising the number of elevation changes for area noted for it's farm land. Played at 3pm and finished in 3 hours playing with another person. Greens are fast and in great condition. Tee boxes hadn't been mowed in a while.
Course well maintained. Greens true to conditions.
7am play started in heavy fog and by the completion of the 13th hole the sun broke through. Maintenance crews were in abundance chain clearing moisture from greens and fairways. Course is in very nice shape and unfortunately for me I was able to try out three different bunkers, each with fluffy white sand.
I recommend this course, especially at the Golfnow rate.

Excellent condition, great rolling land, short
Excellent facility in that there's a grass driving range with a practice sand trap and chipping area. The greens were fantastic, I'm not a turf-knowledgeable person but the grass on the greens is different than the other courses I've played in Northern California. Like a pool table and the roll was true, really a pleasure to putt on. Trees everywhere, one of the guys I played with went a little nutty because almost all of his tee shots ended up behind a tree. Of course he appeared to have no alignment or pre-shot routine. Many of the par 4s were very short by today's standards where the high-tech driver has made the 320 yard par 4 a little outdated. Tees were in awesome shape, par 5s were nice and 2 of the par 3s were really great holes. The staff and several people on the course brought up the issue that we were "non members" - if you're sensitive to this type of thing beware. A lot of these type of golf clubs have begrudgingly embraced general public play for obvious financial reasons but they still have a chip on their shoulder. Course is out in the middle of nowhere which made the "non member" references perplexing.
This course is challenging and has great holes
Salinas County club is a very well maintained the greens are in awesome condition and the fairways are nicely maintained. the course has a great layout which will test your accuracy and great risk reward holes.
Friendly staff, well maintained course and a good value, what more can you ask for.
We played on an unusually slow day for the course so we sailed around in just over 3 hours. It's supposed to be private, but the staff were glad to see us and asked us to come back. We will and have already recommended Salinas G & CC to several friends. Beautiful course, well taken care of, challenging but very fair. The only thing that would make it better is if we lived closer. Had a great time overall.
great course
I loved this course the view is supreme the fairways are in Great condition the greens are almost perfect they are fast and very challenging
