Great course, needs maintenance
Overall, this course is very nice and I do give it my recommendation. Greens run quick but not too quick, and fairways are crisp. Course layout is challenging; some target golf and some long holes from the tips so bring your Big Dog and a go to 250 yard wood/hybrid. Rough could use a little water and trimming. Biggest issues were with the tee boxes and bunkers. Tee boxes need evenly grown green grass and to be leveled out. Bunkers need to have a consistent sand type and be maintained to stay as soft as the sand type will allow. This course has so much potential, and it’s been over a year since Troon has taken over but I haven’t seen the “world class golf experience” as described by Mike Ryan, E-VP, COO, Troon.
Nice course but needs better T boxes
The course overall is a nice layout that is challenging and fun with elevation changes, some water hazards and OB areas. It is quite and somewhat secluded. Course is well maintained with good condition greens that mostly roll true and well manicured fairways and rough. The T boxes are another story. They really need some work, very chewed up and and lumpy to the point it was difficult finding a flat stance on several. Bunkers are also in need of work with very little sand. Overall a nice layout but with some work on the T boxes and bunkers would be more enjoyable to play.
Course conditions really slipping
This used to be my favorite public course in the East Bay, but the course conditioning has really suffered. Tee boxes are a mess and the greens are bumpy. I'll still keep this on the rotation because I enjoy the layout, but I hope they put some effort in the conditioning.
Greens and Fairways are Great
As the title states, the greens and fairways are in outstanding shape. Greens rolling true, pretty slick and firm, but holding approach shots. Troon golf has taken over management of the course, and clearly these have been their two areas of focus. The bunkers are hard, almost not maintained. Tee boxes are mostly a mess and need an overhaul. But some tee boxes not in play appear in great condition, so they will probably rotate to those and start work on the others at some point. The rough is tough but fair when mowed. When not mowed it is very penal, and finding your ball is next to impossible (which is unfair for a public track). Pace of play early morning is exceptional. Range has always been iffy, hitting into a hillside, and isn't always available if you have an early tee time. For now you can't beat the price for the fairways and greens on a former LPGA tour stop layout.
Getting Worse!
Today the driving range was closed without notice.
Could have posted on the website, Facebook, called or emailed those with tee times booked in advance. The design of the driving range is terrible and ripe for balls getting lost, but this is a known issue that apparently has escaped management. They have balls "on order" but apparently didn't anticipate the need. No offer was made to compensate players for the inconvenience. Way to care about your customers Troon! Easy thing would have been to offer a free small bucket of balls when I come back. Total blown opportunity. I won't be back any time soon and probably will not renew my Troon Card membership.
Tee time issue
I booked 10:50am saturday only to get to the course and be told we were booked at 11:18. I checked my email & had 2 emails from golfnow. One confirmed 10:50 & another for 11:18. How? We waited. The course layout is good. The course condition is poor. All the tee boxes are brutal. Rounded dirt piles. Our cart had 2 bald front tires. One cart died on the 14th hole. My cart would lurch forward 5 seconds after I parked it every time. The pace was slow slow slow, nobody moved anyone along. The staff was friendly but I definitely got the impression this course is in serious trouble.
Disappointing
When we arrived after my hour and thirty minute drive we were told we had to wait for a cart. When we received a cart they said it should be good enough to make at least nine holes then they will change it after nine holes. I'm willing to work with that. After the first hole we were pushing it to the second green where it wouldn't move anymore. None of the bunkers were raked prior to play. Not like previous players didn't take but the ground crew doesn't take care or them after the course gets watered. You would expect after the long drive and the experience maybe compensation would be in order but i emailed their director and nothing as far as that. Not worth the gamble of taking that drive and having the same experience.
Tournament Public Course
Course is good. Hit it down the middle or have a tough time. Best course for the $ in twilight hour. Bang for buck is there and worthwhile always. Greens were really good even with a few weeds ya’ll need to get on that.
How many rounds have I played here over the last two decades? Enough to say that I make putts and hit greens and fairways.
The course has a wind that is nasty when against on 13. One putt eight greens ere while they were running about 10-11, seemed like nothing missed. At 12 stimp speed, these become very nasty. A must play I don’t care what anyone says. Love the course.
aweful tee boxes
the tee boxes were really bad, not flat with lots of bald patches. in some areas the rough had been mowed and tons of clumps of dead grass were laying around and obviously had been there a few days. fairways and greens were okay. love the layout but this course has seen better days.
Needs more time
Positive
Friendly staff
Notice improvement (still a lot to go)
Course layout
Not good part
tee box is still in bad shape
green needs fix.. there are still fungus disease w/ uneven green
pace of play: 5 hr 40 min..
last part was torture.. It was windy, so that might affect pace of play. However, still too long.
I hope new Owner improved course better (pace, course condition), then it will be great course again.
Good like always
Course condition was just OK. Greens are mostly recovered from aeration. They appear to be just being able to mow the rough. It was long, thick and brutal to find balls in. I know, I know....hit the fairway...
Always a good day out there. It was windy which made it very tough. Tougher than usual.
As always, staff was friendly. Food was good. Great day.
disappointed
after all I've heard that this is supposed to be a challenging course that's kept in great condition, I was surprised to find it in poor to average shape. Lots of mowed grass left on the fairways, sand traps very hard and mud in some , greens were bumpy and not cared for and there was trash on the course with several trash cans full not emptied. This was mid morning . Staff was very friendly. Pace of play was very slow with no marshall to help correct it. May give it another chance but for the cost of play, there are several courses in the area that are more cost effective.
Golf Now Good Value
Course design one of top public courses...fairways, rough good, greens final stages recovery from aeration, traps need work...worth the price....
Close
The course is close to being where it should be. Greens are almost out sanding stage, fairways are perfect, but the bunkers are pretty much unplayable. Staff is great and Jrs play for free later in the day.
Hiddenbrooke - Best condition in years!
I’ve noticed a steady and marked improvement in regard to the condition of the fairways, greens and tee boxes, since Troon took over management of the course.
I’d have to say that when I played yesterday, my impression was that the course was almost as good as it was when it first opened.
The bunkers are better but not yet ‘great’ and the cart paths are in need of some TLC.
Overall impression is that I’m thrilled about the rapid improvement of the course conditions.
Than You Troon Management and Staff at Hiddenbrooke!
Conditions
Course in sub par condition. Deicing range very poor. Would rather hit into nets off mats rather than those conditions. Teeing grounds bare. Hard to find a patch of grass. Bunker have zero sand for the most part. Some with a scant amount. Fairways ok but could use attention. Greens ok had been aerated a few weeks earlier. Course amenities, ballwashers, divot mix boxes, waste containers, etc. all subpar. Won't play there again soon.
