Good course conditions. Pace of play was show due to a tournament but overall a good day golfing
Great layout, very poor course conditions
Keep coming back for the creative, challenging, modern course design. The canyon creates challenging wind conditions, there are holes where club selection changes by the minute with the swirling winds. Holes 1, 3, 5, 8, 9, 15, 16, 17 and 18 are wonderful golf holes. Hole 16 is one of my all time favorites when the green side ponds are full and the brook is running.
Today was the first time I have played here in a couple years. Walked away majorly disappointed in the course condition. T boxes were terrible. Some t boxes were being redone, every hole needs to be addressed as I was hitting off dirt with patchy crab grass. Municipal courses are better than this. Also, overgrown trees impacted t boxes too. Mr Palmer would be ashamed.
The course is generally wet, more so today. The rough was gnarly, creating a unique look and feel, penalizing shots that even just missed the green. No issue with this type of setup, except I think this was due to deferred maintenance rather than a creative superintendent. Most of the greens were in good shape. The traps were distressed, lacking what looked like months of attention.
Won’t be back anytime soon.
Hiddenbrooke Coming Back
You can definitely see a difference Troon is making to Hiddenbrooke. The most noticable is the drainage. Playing a morning round regardless of weather you could always count on puddles on certain holes . Those were gone.
Tee boxes are being rebuilt, currently #13 is in porgress so no 100 foot drop tee shot on to the par three. The greens and fairways were both in good shape. I'm not sure if it was by design but the rough was very long making it a lot tougher if you don;t find the fairway.
Hiddenbrooke a very nice layout and nice greens
The course has a very nice and challenging layout,
the greens were in very good conditions, however the fairways are just Ok.
I did not like the roug,h, they are really thick and tall, so if you want to score say in the fairway.
Areas of improvements: no question the t-boxes a lot of opportunities and also the bunker, they are just dirt.
I will play again for sure.
Good track
Always enjoy this course. Greens rolled better than they looked, high rough, fun
Hiddenbrooke getting better, every day!
Now that Troon has taken over the management of this course, the course seems to be improving, week by week.
The fairways are green, the greens are green and the rough is being mowed!
If there had been more sand to the bunkers, I’ d have rated the condition of the course as having 4 stars, instead of 3.
I really like what Troon is doing the the course. Keep up the good work!
Best value in the Bay Area
This is a hidden gem. You can usually get on easily, the cost is minimal (especially compared with other Bay Area courses), and the course itself is challenging, interesting and well maintained. Tough greens to putt. Palmer made a good one here.
Run by Troon Golf.
Don't walk it- you will be wiped out. Very hilly and can get hot
Challenging & fun
Loved playing this course. It’s tough - if you don’t hit straight you will become frustrated. Fairways are narrow, hilly, tree lined with water hazards everywhere. Greens are mean. Can’t wait to play again.
Slow Progress
I write a review about Hiddenbrooke about once or twice each year, to gauge the progress. Still needs to come a ways, and expected more from Troon. This is a great layout, challenging and fun. Off course amenities are solid, the grill and drinks are good. The course once was so much fun, and is less than ideal because of (1) crappy uneven tee boxes (mats would be better almost), (2) uneven and poorly maintained bunkers (maybe getting better glacially) and (3) poor rough and off the fairway maintenance. The last one is very frustrating because they don't mow off the cart paths and you lose far too many balls that are a foot from the path. I have no idea why it's so hard to fix the tee boxes (17 has been ripped up for so long that weeds have grown back into the area they prepped for a new sod), It still is fun when you don't get stuck behind a slow 4 (or a 5). They need to fix the boxes all of them and move the grill to the main clubhouse and set up a public drinking area where you can watch people come in on 18 (like Half Moon Bay),
Awesome
Online price was outstanding and the course is freaking great. Greens are terrific and smooth as well as the fairwaysi. And the burgers are so tasty and get a big yummers.
A good product
Great course! Would be better if there was more sand in the bunkers (what else is new in the Bay Area?). Will be back next week to challenge this course again!
Great course, needs maintenance
Overall, this course is very nice and I do give it my recommendation. Greens run quick but not too quick, and fairways are crisp. Course layout is challenging; some target golf and some long holes from the tips so bring your Big Dog and a go to 250 yard wood/hybrid. Rough could use a little water and trimming. Biggest issues were with the tee boxes and bunkers. Tee boxes need evenly grown green grass and to be leveled out. Bunkers need to have a consistent sand type and be maintained to stay as soft as the sand type will allow. This course has so much potential, and it’s been over a year since Troon has taken over but I haven’t seen the “world class golf experience” as described by Mike Ryan, E-VP, COO, Troon.
Nice course but needs better T boxes
The course overall is a nice layout that is challenging and fun with elevation changes, some water hazards and OB areas. It is quite and somewhat secluded. Course is well maintained with good condition greens that mostly roll true and well manicured fairways and rough. The T boxes are another story. They really need some work, very chewed up and and lumpy to the point it was difficult finding a flat stance on several. Bunkers are also in need of work with very little sand. Overall a nice layout but with some work on the T boxes and bunkers would be more enjoyable to play.
Course conditions really slipping
This used to be my favorite public course in the East Bay, but the course conditioning has really suffered. Tee boxes are a mess and the greens are bumpy. I'll still keep this on the rotation because I enjoy the layout, but I hope they put some effort in the conditioning.
Greens and Fairways are Great
As the title states, the greens and fairways are in outstanding shape. Greens rolling true, pretty slick and firm, but holding approach shots. Troon golf has taken over management of the course, and clearly these have been their two areas of focus. The bunkers are hard, almost not maintained. Tee boxes are mostly a mess and need an overhaul. But some tee boxes not in play appear in great condition, so they will probably rotate to those and start work on the others at some point. The rough is tough but fair when mowed. When not mowed it is very penal, and finding your ball is next to impossible (which is unfair for a public track). Pace of play early morning is exceptional. Range has always been iffy, hitting into a hillside, and isn't always available if you have an early tee time. For now you can't beat the price for the fairways and greens on a former LPGA tour stop layout.
Getting Worse!
Today the driving range was closed without notice.
Could have posted on the website, Facebook, called or emailed those with tee times booked in advance. The design of the driving range is terrible and ripe for balls getting lost, but this is a known issue that apparently has escaped management. They have balls "on order" but apparently didn't anticipate the need. No offer was made to compensate players for the inconvenience. Way to care about your customers Troon! Easy thing would have been to offer a free small bucket of balls when I come back. Total blown opportunity. I won't be back any time soon and probably will not renew my Troon Card membership.
