Lakemont at Stone Mountain Golf Course
About
Stone Mountain Golf Club boasts 36 holes of championship golf that are a part of Stone Mountain Park, which is one of the Southeast's most popular attractions. The Lakemont Course winds around the beautiful Stone Mountain Lake through forests of Georgia pines and hardwoods. John LaFoy, a native of the state, designed the golf course. He incorporated his signature mounding and dramatic bunkering, which is enhanced even further by the wildly undulating terrain. The lake is more prominent on the front nine where water comes into play on six holes. The back nine still features water on four holes, but there are more rocky outcroppings, providing different but equally stunning scenery. Stunning mountain views can be enjoyed from every hole and golfers will also be able to glimpse the famous Confederate memorial carving featuring Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis, and Stonewall Jackson.

Great Views
This was my first time playing in Georgia and I absolutely loved it!
Needs TLC
The condition of this course has deteriorated since I last played it. There are a few quirky holes on which you can lose strokes if you don’t know how to play them. These negatives are offset by the spectacular setting on the front nine. A coyote joined us on one of the holes- I don’t know if this is a common.occurrence.
Could be a great experience with some improvements
To begin, I knew that it would cost $15 to enter the park, but I feel this is a ridiculous fee to pay when I was clearly there just to play golf.
First impression - I handed my bag to one of the outside staff members who promptly placed my bag on cart. As I was walking towards the pro shop, I heard a "crash" and one of the other members of the outside staff had ran another cart directly into the back of cart/bag, to which everyone laughed it off...not damage to the equipment, but not what you want to see.
The inside staff could have cared less if I was there and seemed bothered when I told them it was my first time playing and if there was anything I should know about the property/course/range.
For $86, I would expect to get more than 19 golf balls to hit at the range. My playing partner received an expired code, which he found out only once we got to the range. He called the pro shop to tell them, and was put on hold and eventually hung up on. When he called back and spoke to the operator, she too could not get the pro shop on the line. As you may or may not know, the driving range is not close to the pro shop and at this point we were about 10-15 minutes from our tee time.
The starter (Lawrence) literally did not say one word to us and acted as if he would rather be anywhere but on the first hole of Lakemont. I asked him about course conditions, greens conditions, expected pace of play with cart path only and I did not get one response. So far $100 in, this is my experience before I even hit my first tee shot.
Having been formally in the golf industry, as an assistant golf course superintendent, the condition of the greens were not worth what we paid for the round. Being the end of March, I was expecting the bentgrass greens to be nearly immaculate. I was surprised to find how slow, fuzzy and inconsistent they were, not to mention how there was more Poa on many of them than Bentgrass.
All in all, not the experience I was hoping for the cost to play.
Good time
It was a cold windy day when we played. We followed a foursome and did wait occasionally but not long. The course was wet from recent rain so carts on paths only which made for a lot of walking. This is a beautiful course. Vistas are magnificent. Front nine is fairly open and requires choosing shots. The back nine is more difficult. Because of rain many fairways were difficult to walk on and waders would have helped. Perhaps the other course on Stone Mountain would be better.
Tuesday at Lakemont
Staff was friendly and professional, course played quick with no waiting. There was no water on the entire course, every station was dry. No beverage cart either...disappointing! We wanted to have a beer after the round and the entire clubhouse was closed at 4:30pm...ouch!
Most scenic course in Atlanta
This course is absolutely stunning to the eye. I'd give it 5/5 if the greens were in a little better shape.
GREAT FRONT 9...AVERAGE BACK 9
The front 9 has some of the most beautiful scenery with Stone Mountain in the backdrop, water and beautiful views. The back nine however, lacked the views of the front, but that didn't mean a lack of challenges. One par 5 was straight as an arrow 504 yards and had a wind tunnel blowing in my face the entire hole. Took a drive, 2 5 woods, and a 5 iron just to get it to a pitch-able area! But I ended up shooting 3 or 4 over, the greens are in decent condition, definitely seen worse on a golf course, but the rolls are for the most part true and I will definitely be back.
The only negative is having to pay the park fees or have an annual membership just to be able to pay to play the course.
Great course
I have played this course now for several years and always enjoy the challenge.
Course in good condition for winter play. Great staff!!!
WOW
Worst green I have played all year , and $15 dollars parking , no thanks not woth it . There other courses for less and in better up keep around here (southland) . Definitely no resort by all means .
Needs some updates
For $50 they need to update the golf carts. They need to add the GPS system in the carts. Some of the greens have crab grass growing in them.
Very nice and scenic front 9, goofy back 9
I ended the round feeling positive but mixed about this course. The front 9 wraps around the lake very nicely, with good golf holes and very scenic views of the lake and the mountain. The back 9, which begins what seems like a mile away from the front, is much different. It plays inland in very hilly areas and is tighter. Some of the fairways seem to just be routed straight through major ups and downs of hills. There are many blind shots and some odd configurations. The greens were thick but nicely sloped so were interesting and fair. This course is definitely not walkable, with big elevations through fairways and very long green to tee distances.
