Disappointing
Used to play this course a lot in years past, but not so much recently. The greens are the biggest challenge here as it's a fairly short and straightforward layout otherwise. The good news is the greens were in decent shape (except for the ball marks, but that's not unique to this course). Fairways and tee boxes were horrendous. By far the worst course conditions I've seen this spring and summer at any course in the area. Lots of burn out areas and ugly crab grass. Doesn't say much for Rutgers U's turf management program.
It's playable, but not worth what they charge given the current conditions. Go somewhere else until they figure out how to keep the course in good condition.
Very poor conditions.
Not sure where to begin here. I have played this course for decades and I was so disappointed in the playing conditions. The tee boxes were terrible. Bare spots all over and crab grass. The fairways were also filled with crab grass and dirt ruts. The greens were slow and did not roll true. Not sure if they are ever rolled at all. This course is an embarrassment to the university and does not come close to Big Ten quality. I can’t believe that the golf team actually tees it up here. Paid $58 with a cart and it was a rip off for the quality. I am a 15 handicap and carded a 85 for the day.
Hi, nitnylion88. Thank you for reviewing the course. Let us first start by apologizing for the poor experience you had during your visit. Your feedback about the course is important to us. Thank you for playing Rutgers University Golf Course. We hope to see you again soon.
Where’s the agriculture students
Overall worst conditions I have played on all year. Fairways worst I have ever played. Greens and bunkers well maintained. Track layout plain Jane

Cow Pasture
The course has gone downhill in the last ten years. Every green is picked with ball and shoe marks and are not uniform. Many different species of grass makes the line and speed inconsistent. The tee boxes are mediocre and the sand traps were replaced very poorly. The rangers don’t pay attention to any unfixed ball marks or poor etiquette. Their main concern is pushing golfers to finish under four hours. Nothing else matters to them. That means four golfers have 13.3 minutes per hole. Low handicap and scratch can do this. Mid and above can’t. One lost ball or hazard and they start pushing you. Good golf course management would have 14 minutes between starting times to allow play at 13.3 minutes a hole. But the current pro and the one before her don’t know much about managing a course. They’re all money so they cramp in the tee times 9 minutes apart and run it like a track meet. They want your money and they want you gone fast.

Pace of play an issue
On a very hot day the course was crowded. Our 3 some was behind a 2 some and we had to wait in them way too often. The ranger said 2 4 somes were ahead of them and that 2 some had some waiting too
The course was in good shape just some brown
out spots in some fairways
The greens ran well
Great Deal
Got a time for $24, joined a twosome who had the same deal and a single. Played at our pace, had no group behind us. Greens are in great shape, would have scored better if I could find the fairway. had a nice day.
We will be back
Played as. 3 some. Pace of play was fine. Course is in good shape. Including the bunkers which have been poor on some of the other NJ courses
Great value for the money
Very enjoyable day. Well managed. Relatively short course and very straight forward. Unfortunately the players do not do a great job fixing ball marks on greens. Nice practice area. Easy walking course.
Great conditions & pace for a public course
Greens are in great condition for the middle of the summer. Definitely quick, but well maintained and a consistent roll.
Plays relatively short from the tips for long hitters, but makes up for it with a wide variety of shapes from hole to hole. Greens are guarded by traps and have undulation that will challenge you on most approach shots. Not a lot of water to worry about but the treeline will force you to play angles well.
A little bit pricey compared to your typical public course but the conditions will meet your expectations at the higher price point. Pace of play is monitored closely by rangers and 4 hour rounds are very achievable on weekends.
Always a good option
Rutgers is a fun course to play and is typically in very good shape.
Always a pleasure to play this course
I used to play here 25-30 times per year back about 10 years ago but now only get here a few times per year. Today was first time playing it since last October and I am happy to report all is as expected at my favorite public course in NJ. Pace of play was perfect as usual, greens were real smooth and faster than usual. Bunkers were manicured well with plenty of sand. Thanks to the staff and superintendent for maintaining this course is great shape.
Nice track
First time I’ve ever played at Rutgers. Staff was very friendly and accommodating. Course not long but interesting . Keep it in the fairway and you can score. Course in very good shape the only thing on the down side was that some people do not fix their ball marks on the green, I don’t know why it’s a common courtesy. All in all a very nice day I will be back.
Solid Course
Very well kept and quality for what you pay. The day we played it was walking-only —- no carts. The staff was VERY strict about the pace of play. While I appreciate them keeping the pace of play going, it’s ridiculous to think a group of four can complete 9 holes in under 2 hours without carts.
Nice walking course
Great course to walk. Great greens when mowed low. Good challenging layout. Not the longest from back tees, but still very challenging, especially some of the par 5’s.
Typical day at rutgers
Beautiful day. Course held the rain really well from the week of heavy rain. Wind made some of the long par 5s a bit longer which was a new challenge. Enjoyed the day.
Squeeze in a round between rains
The course was in good condition even after heavy rain the whole morning. The green was beautiful
Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood
Gorgeous day for golf. As usual, the staff was very friendly and helpful. Got us off early when there was a no-show.
I noticed what great shape the course was in, but saw very few workers. How do they do it? Course was perfect.
Now, my golf, however, stunk, but I had a wonderful time. Go figure.
