Fun Day on the course
Played the course for the 3rd time this week and had a great time! Staff is exceptional, greens are perfect. Doing some work on tee boxes but, you tee it up anyway. Fairways are in good shape. 9's are completely different. Front 9 is relatively flat while the back 9 is a roller coaster!
Great experience
I was on a short vacation and booked this course, great for the price, they paired me up with a couple and had an outstanding time. The greens rolled good and fast, for the amount of play the course gets. The pro shop should remind everyone , every time to fix their ball marks. Only bad thing was that the groundskeeper burnt up several tee boxes by over fertilizing and no water. But still a great municipal course with a very friendly staff. Dexter paired me up with the right group and I thank you. And the guy inside was supper friendly.
Another good day
Played again this week and everything was perfect. Affordable, friendly and great greens.
New to the area
Because the ladies league business meeting went too long, all the late morning tee times were 45 minutes behind schedule. Pace was slow but enjoyed my round of golf despite having to wait. Great value for the money; starter and pro shop staff were very pleasant.
Great Ross Course
Played the course on Monday 6/18 and thought it was in great shape. Greens are the best in the area! Pace was good. Staff was friendly. Snack bar attendant was pleasant. I have been playing the course for years and it's never been better. Overall a perfect day!
Beware ticks, poison ivy
I made the mistake of looking for our balls out of the fairway on the back nine. I got home with 4 ticks, 2 attached. The back nine rough borders between 6 inches and waist high. I was told by the pro that Muni was growing some "natural areas." You could bale the rough on 17. Mosquitoes near swamp creek on #4. Three foot poison ivy in edge of woods on 14. Next day was Father's Day tournament. Hope no children got lost in the rough. I think "natural area" means too lazy to mow. I've playing here since 1969 and have never seen it so bad.
Bad management
This course was taken over by Pope golf. They do not have rangers and many days no starters. Play is crowded with 5 or 6 in a group not uncommon. The course is in bad shape, the sand traps are full of dirt and rocks and the greens have hot spots on them. Pope has shrunken many of the greens because the edges are dying.
They came in ynder the pretense of restoring the course but have done just the opposite. Oh did I mention they cut so many large trees that the city warned them not to chop anymore without their permission?
This course is handy to town and if you can catch it not crowded you can have a decent round. Or it’s good if you literally have all day to play 18 holes. Your call.
Very little, if any, of this comment is true. The greens have not been shrunk. Trees have not been cut down. How does GolfNow allow completely false reviews like this?
Too Pricey for Early Tee Times.
Booked online because of proximity to travel path. Greens were okay but had mower clippings.. Recent rains had left the course wet and most fairways hadn't been recently mowed. Tee boxes were atrocious. They had not been mowed and were bare in most places. Starter let us tee off and then asked if a walking single could join us. What golfer could say no knowing the other player had already been told that he would ask. Fortunately, the golfer was friendly but I didn't drive over 1000 miles to play with someone that didn't arrange a tee time. We had to wait on every hole for a twosome ahead driving a cart. There was a walking five-some ahead of them. We only played nine due to travel plans. The experience was definitely not worth the money spent. Gas cart had ill-adjusted brakes. 90-degree rule was in effect due to recent rains but it appeared we were the only one who knew what that meant. Other carts appeared to ignore it during our nine holes.
4-5 tee boxes are bare
The course is going to have a tough years with tee boxes already a mess...The Saturday mid morning round took 4:55 ...Course needs to be managed...yes I went in and told them about the waiting on absolutely every shot...Some one in charge should step up and manage the course and resold the tee boxes before it gets hot...if we are going to have a 5 star experience
A tale of two nines
Interesting course with very flat, open front nine and a hilly, tight back nine. Course was in decent shape considering the amount of rain recently. Greens were in very good shape. Only drawback was slow pace of play. It took five hours to complete the round.
Ranger needs to step up
Everyone started on the back nine...starting to lose several tee boxes...this does not normally happen until September here...Someone needs to get out of clubhouse and ckout...Love our muni
Potential
Many tees devoid of grass. Seed there for weeks, but unwatered. Thanks to recent record rain, perhaps it will germinate now. Rain is how they water. Some of the rough has not been mowed in weeks, making it tough to find your ball. until the rain, the greens were VERY firm, but fast. Now they are slow. This place could be very good with a little manpower. Weedeating needed around all trees, etc. Sad to see what could be so good be so mediocre. Crabgrass coming soon to fill in tee voids.
Gil, being a regular here and playing weekly with our men's group, hopefully you have seen a lot of the improvements being made to the course over the past couple years. We are always striving to improve the course conditions and welcome feedback. The next time you are in, let me know and we can sit down and answer any questions you may have regarding our golf course maintenance program. Thanks for the feedback and being a regular here at the Asheville Golf Course.
Good and the Bad
The course was ok greens good tee box bad ...
very slow pace need a RANGER .....tried to Play 18 never made it ??? only 9 ....
Great municipal course
This course continues to be improved. Great and friendly staff. Highly recommend playing this course.
Slow play/poor customer service
They book way too many tee times. Have no-one managing pace of play. Then refuse a 9 hole raincheck after a 3 hour front nine. Sorry I wasn't ready for a 6 hour round. The course wasn't in very good condition either. Patchy fairways and grass in the bunkers. Definitely not worth $38 on a weekday afternoon. Which is what was quoted to me by the clubhouse. The only plus is it's a Donald Ross design.
I am sorry about your experience here. If you could call me directly, I would appreciate getting more information from you regarding when you played. There were no other reports of extreme slow play on the day you said you played, so I just wanted to see where the issue was. The only reason we could not offer a 9 hole raincheck, is if you purchased a 'hot deal' which needs to be worked out with Golfnow, since that is a direct transaction with them. Either way, I would like to make it right for you. We are always striving for improvement in operations and our course conditions. Again, please contact me personally at the Golf Shop and ask for Pat. Thanks
Typical muni
Booked through golf now and got a cheap hot deal. I guess you get what you paid for. Course was a little rough. Tee boxes, fairways and greens were average at best. Bunkers were hard, and rough hard, with little if any grass. If you weren't hitting from the fairway it was near impossible to get a clean hit on the ball. Fairways were spotty. The staff was very nice. I wish they had more options for food. They had hotdogs cooking but weren't done unless they nuked them, and one sandwich made. I'll spend a little more sand go somewhere else next time.
Good bargain but fairways need work
Greens way too fast and super-dry. Some trash on back nine greens. Fairways bumpy, grass non-existent in some areas. Knots and clusters of grass, not smooth. Rough was fine, bunkers fine, fairways need work.
GPI has real grass on tees. Not sand, hardpan, or crabgrass. Nor does it have temporary tees abounding. I did not see much grass seed on the closed gold tees at Muni. A child could see what's wrong with the pitiful sod job on #9. SHAME !!!
Played GPI on 6/22. Just so you'll know I didn't drive by. First hole (par 4) has "natural area" right of the green on the other side of the bunker. Much closer to play than any area at muni. Numerous other natural areas (recommended by the USGA) all through the course.
I suspect u0000843751 is an employee or paid commentor. Muni is in no form or fashion a 5 star course. Or maybe it's the only course he's ever played, and has only seen GPI.
Don't play Grove Park. They have a lot more "natural areas" and you would be covered in ticks!!
