Not liking how things are going here
We don't live in Asheville but visit a couple of times a year for past 8 years. We have always played this course and enjoyed it immensely until yesterday. We waited on every hole to tee off and many times to get on the green. The course itself was in bad shape. Most of the tee boxes for the red tees were sand with some grass. Even the fairways grass was sparse in many places and hitting off sand/dirt. I expect that when I hit outside the fairways, but not when I hit it straight! We gave up on the 14th hole and left early after playing for 3.5 hrs. We figured early afternoon would be a good time, but we were wrong. We'll be trying a different course on our next visit to Asheville. I was happy I booked a cheaper round on golf now instead of paying full price.
Okay
Greens are not in good shape.
Thank you for your feedback and we apologize for your poor experience. We assure you this is not the standard we strive to achieve and we will continue to work on course conditions.
Pathetic
No grass except crab on tees. Greens mostly terrible with dead spots and crabgrass. Fairways thin with crabgrass. Perhaps best part of course is the bunkers, and they have rocks in them. 5 and half hour round. Will not be back until things get better. The grass seed seen here and there will not sprout without water.
Thank you for your feedback. We assure you this is not the standard we strive to achieve. We are constantly working on course conditions and look forward to having you back soon.
Most improved course in area
It is nice to see that this course is getting some much needed TLC. It has improved greatly over this past year so kudos to the golf maintenance team! Keep up the great work!!!
Great value
I played this course because my father and I played when I was very young. The clubhouse is the same and the course is the same. Good value for the money and the amount of play it receives. Friendly staff makes it even more worth it.
Thank you for your feedback! We are happy you and your father enjoy playing the course and look forward to having you both back in the near future.
Back 9 is in rough shape
We play Asheville often, this is the first time I've left disappointed in the course. The front 9 is in great shape. From tee to green it's in EXCELLENT condition.
The back 9 is a different story. Number 10 is a 2 on a scale from 1-10. Tee box area is great, but fairway and green are just awful.
11's green is nearly void of grass. 12 is ok. 13's green is similar to 11. Nearly every green had issues on it. Very disappointed.
Bring your own snacks and drinks. $2.75 for a 16 ounce bottle of water? No thanks.
Honestly, we've played here a lot, but this may be the last time for a month or so.
Donald Ross would be appalled
My wife and I played yesterday, on this course, which contained, plain dirt t boxes (there was a sprinkling of grass seed included), fungus on greens, and crabgrass for fairways. Fortunately, the rain came after 12 holes, and we could leave! Never played a course with such poor conditions. Unfortunate, since the surrounding area is beautiful!
Good price, back nine super hilly
Course needs some work. Good price.
Good course terrible condition
Played here for years and this is the worse I've ever seen it. A lot of the tee boxes are dirt and a lot of fairways were dirt and grab grass every where. I got a deal for 11 bucks to play there and honestly that's all it was worth.
WORSE
Greens dying from fungus/disease. Tees (esp. senior tees) almost solid crabgrass and dirt. Downed limbs and debris (for weeks) all along woods. Enough to bring chainsaw and stock up !! They won't do any maintenance that requires paying staff. Swamps, sinkholes in landing areas for several months. Snack bar prices atrocious ! I (and my friends) used to spend $20- 50 ? each a week in snack bar, now MAYBE a beer after the round. CITY OF ASHEVILLE please end your agreement with POPE GOLF !!! Same conditions every summer, except this year no crabgrass on greens (yet). I play weekly, and have not met the last 2 greenskeepers, and have not met the pro. Lots of rocks in sand.
Hot Times are a steal!
Honestly one of my favorite Asheville courses. Donald Ross design and it's well kept up. Front nine is flat and deceivingly short. Back nine is up and down mountain course. Very enjoyable, when playing as a twosome with no one in front of us, my son and I play in 3.5. The staff is always kind and welcoming. Played it twice in one week. Definitely worth $$$
The front nine is flat, the back nine is hilly with lots of trees. Totally different nines.
I have played this course a few times and every time it takes 5 to 6 hours. I do not know who holds up the field, but a marshal needs to monitor the pace of play and pull the group to the side and allow the group behind to play though right away. Don't ruin their slow play by telling them to pick up the pace, tell them to visit with each other a few minutes and enjoy their round. If you like to walk, the front is easy to walk. The back will be more challenging to walk especially #11 take a club or 2 extra for your second shot to the green. Hole #17 is a 5 par. Keep the tee shot favoring the left side. The right side slopes down and that goes for your second shot as well. You'll lose the ball in the thick rough or woods- not worth the penalty. Keep the ball near the cart path or left side of the fairway and you will score well. Hole #18 keep the tee shot left, it will come down the hill and you may even be lucky to be on the green. If you slice, you will likely find your ball in the parking lot.
Thank you for your review. We apologize for the pace of play. We will address this internally in hopes of improving our course and making for happier golfers. Again, we are sorry for any inconvenience you may have dealt with.
No Ranger or real management
This used to be a good course for the money. Now they are basically charging $40 for a $25 course. All of the employees that helped keep the course in good condition and knew how to deal w customers are all gone. Pope golf took over this course and they were doing a great job at improving the course conditions but they don't have any real management. They allow a group of men that call themselves the gang to run the entire course. There is never a manager present and the pace of play here is terrible because they don't have a ranger. It sometimes takes 5 hrs to play a round of golf due to the fact that the gang will be playing in front of you. I suggest if your going to play a round here you better do it early in the A.M. I suggest if you want to play a round of golf in this area go to Black Mountain golf course, Reems creek, High Vista or Broadmoor. Their prices are better and the pace of play is much much better. It's time for a change at Asheville Golf course.
Rock hard
Whole course rock hard. Very few greens will accept a shot. Land 30 yards short, still bounce over. Hoping that when dead oak on #12/14 falls over and crushes the cart rain shed, no one gets hurt. The tree will probably impact #14 green also. Hurt my wrist first trying to put tee in ground, then hurt more trying to fix a ball mark on green. Been playing here since the late sixties, but it may be time to move on to some course that waters the tees and greens. SAD, because Muni could easily be in great shape. They mgmt. let sixsomes play twice last week, and carts are allowed to go right up to the edge of greens, making the fringes even firmer. Onesomes and twosomes abound, clogging the course. All about $$$$$$$$$.
You should do some wrist exercises.
Atrcious management
I think it's stopped, but you could book a tee time (TEEOFF) right in the middle of the Men's Club group. These times have been reserved for decades. So they double booked times and put the outsiders first in line. Delay of 30 min., then 5 hr 5 min. round. They let onesomes and twosomes out, on a holiday weekend, jamming the course. Thank God it rained on Friday, so greens would hold. They have been rock hard. Should be addressing the swamps, sinkholes, and grassless deserts on holes 10-14, but instead putting pine straw and gravel to "beautify" Muni, in hopes of Country Clubbers coming since their course is closed. This course could be great, but not without some effort, money, and water. Hot dog and 1 beer = $11
Thank you for your feedback and we are deeply apologetic for your unpleasant experience. We will address all of the issues that you have expressed internally in hopes of improving our course and making for happier golfers. Again, we are sorry for any inconvenience you may have dealt with.
Donald Ross Gem
Wonderful course, especially if you enjoy golf course architecture. Unlike many of the newer "championship" designs, this course will be enjoyed by every different handicap level. Front 9 features Ross classic turtleback greens. Most shots are straightforward off the tee with plenty of short game options around the hole. Hitting the green is very important. The par 3s are especially stout.
Back 9 totally changes pace. Ross designs every hole to fit into the natural lay of the land. Every shot is its own exploration that must be thoughtfully executed.
Bottom Line -if you enjoy classic golf courses, do not miss this gem.
Thank you for reviewing us! We are thrilled to hear that you found our course to be wonderful. Please come back and play again!
Great course
Overall the course is in great condition. There are still a few holes on the back that need attention, but the overall experience was really good. Definitely suggest securing your tee time through GolfNow.
Thank you for your review and feedback. We will take into consideration as we are constantly trying to improve the conditions of our course. Hope to see you on the course again soon!
Great course to play anytime
Outstanding staff: Friendly, courteous, and they pay attention to details.
Outstanding course conditions: Greens are in great shape, no trash on course (cigarette butts, etc.), all fairways, and rough areas are clearly distinct.
Overall: This course stands above most of the top dollar courses in the area. Just a great place to spend the afternoon.
Thank you for your 5 star review! We are so happy you enjoyed your all around experience with us. We hope you come back to play again soon.
Fun course
Played a twosome with a friend and really enjoyed it
