Great mountain course
Good Donald Ross design, front is pretty flat & the back nine is far from flat.
Course is in good shape & a real gem. It's not extremely long with good challenging bent grass greens.
If you have never played, I recommend you give it a try.
Pleasant surprise.
With a front nine wide open and the back tighter, more hills and all with huge greens this course was a pleasure to play. Reasonable greens fees insure that I will come back.
New ownership - Course in decline
I was told that after the new ownership the course conditions have eroded. The rumor was true. A great little layout and a fun course for the money. The fairways have been overtaken by crab grass. You can tell the budget for chemicals is not available. I hope they don't let the course go completely. You can find better values and course conditions. It was my first time playing it..I wanted to check out D. Ross layout...very classic design.
Asheville Municipal Tale of Two 9's
I would guess that Donald Ross only designed the back nine and city planners designed the front.
Very modest when you drive in and play the front. However the back 9 is more than worth the wait! The front 9 is flat busy and less than spectacular. The back nine however is a Donald Ross beauty!! I would play this again just to play the classic rolling flowing Donald Ross back nine that is worth every penny. Once you get into the more secluded back 9, you will have a great experience and make the warm up 9 more acceptable. Greens are in excellent shape throughout the course. A very good value overall for the price.
Enjoyed
Fairways were inconsistent....otherwise very good.
Enjoyed the round
Two courses in one.
Playing 18 holes holes is a lot like playing two different good and challenging nine hole courses. On an early morning after an overnight rain. the course played long from the middle tees with little to no roll in the fairways. Course conditions were a bit soggy from heavy dew and earlier rain but good, with fairways freshly cut and greens and sand traps in very good condition. Rough next to fairway needed mowing. Front nine layout is flat like river-bottom terrain. Back nine layout is mountainous and rolling hills, with barrow fairways and uneven lies through out the tract. Both sides offer challenges for the average golfer. Overall, the course compares highly against any municipal course.. I will play here again.
Fun course!
This was the first time playing this course and it was fun! The back 9 was the best! We will definitely be back!
Asheville Muni- a Gem
This course is nearly a hundred years old and perfectly playable. Certainly not overly long, but a ton of fun. IT is really two different nine hole courses, the first nine is in the river bottom and plays flat well bunkered to protect itself. The back nine plays through an old neighborhood and offers as many elevation changes as you can handle.
I would have played 9 or 18 more if the wife didn't expect me for lunch.
Great fun.
Oh.... the greens were as true and fast as you want. Very receptive and well maintained. Well done to the greens-keepers. Thank you.
I played along with two locals that pointed out just a few things that were blind or were helpful.
scenic course
Unique course! First nine relatively flat and open; back nine a real mountain course with tight fairways.
Great view of he Smokie Mountains. Course was in great over-all shape - the greens had recently been aerated but they will be reall nice in a couple of weeks. Very freindly staff. I will play this course again!!
Nice course
The clubhouse questioned whether I should get a cart. Our printout did not say. However other none hot deals clearly say cart included.. There was lots of confusion as to whether I would get a cart. Ism not sure but this needs to be fixed. It was a little troubling.
municipal golf course.
course is in great condition. greens are fast and a real challenge.
Front side wide open, back narrow and challenging
Had a great day on the golf course. On a vacation looking to play some golf. Excellent layout, can't wait to come back and play the backside again. Need to play more than once to score well.
July 1st 18 hole at mini
Had a overall great day golfing. Shot a +2 74 the tee boxes were the only part of the course that could use some help but for the price had an awesome day! I played here in high school a lot and it has definitely gotten better over the years
2 Courses in one
The set up for this course is nice. Condition of the course was great, if not excellent. Fairways were mown nice with a few rough spots, but not many. Rough was not extremely difficult to get out of, but was rough. Greenside rough was tough to get out from, which was nice, but not overly punishing like other courses in the area. Greens ran true but were sloooowwww. Never did get a decent feel for them. The front 9 is very flat with one or two elevated greens, one driveable par 4 and reachable par 5's. It played well and fairly easy given the openness of the course. The back 9 is mountain golf. A lot of hills and valley's to deal with and several difficult dog legs to negotiate. One in particular calls for any club but a driver or even 3W off the tee. Liked the course, scored a hot deal for $21 on a Saturday so I won't complain about the course. Club house is dated and not very attractive, but it functions for what it is; staff was extremely helpful and enjoyed the round.
Nice course
Nice place to play great course conditions lots of fun but can get crowded
Asheville Municipal Course
In great shape, excellent friendly staff, front nine more of a meadows course, back nine more of a mountain course so good variation, some scraggly spots but the best it has been in years.
very challenging
Course was challenging but pace of play was agonizing slow. Hard to get a rhythm. But will play again and hopefully pace will be better.
Great Course
Like two courses in one. Front 9 open and rolling, then back 9 heads of the mountain. Well worth the visit and great value for money.
Ross at a Discount
Asheville Muni is one of several Donald Ross courses in the Asheville area but the only one you can play for under $75.00 or without a member. I've been fortunate enough to play them all and can honestly say in my opinion it's the best layout of them all. If it where a private course with the impeccable maintainance of Biltmore forest or Grove Park Inn everyone would see what I'm talking about. Unfortunately or should I say fortunately its owned by the city so its maintained to a playable level but that's it and at certain times of the year that's even questionable. With the land this course is built on I can only imagine what say a Tom Fazio could do with it. To sum it up if you've never played it give it a try, it's even in pretty good condition this time of year from late may through july.
