UNC Finley Golf Course
About
UNC Finley Golf Course is one of the top 20 collegiate courses in the country. The club offers a well conditioned comprehensive facility with a driving range, putting green, and chipping. Tom Fazio designed this challenging layout that is diverse enough to appeal to players of all skill levels. He included his trademark false fronts and greenside bunkers. To keep the golf course approachable, there are several different ways to play the bunkers and there are numerous risk-reward opportunities. Seven sets of tees ranging from about 5,000 to 7,300 yards make the course even more versatile. The 15th through the 17th are a beautiful stretch of holes that provide a formidable test as well. The excellent conditions are another feature of the UNC Finley golf course that has made it popular.

Golfer Reviews
Aways a good time here
I've played here several times a year and have always enjoyed the challenge. Great layout. Practice facility not always open due to rain so check first.
A Fine Facility
What a wonderful course. Fazio did a tremendous job of renovation with the land that he had. Course was in great shape considering the stressful heat of summer. The starter was very engaging and friendly and it was simply a pleasure to play.
Would recommend this course to all but you must play the correct tees for your game. Do not think you are better than you are. Play to your ability.
Greens were disappointing
Disappointed by the condition of the stressed greens. The rest of the course was in very good shape. Great lay out, just disappointed by the greens
Thank you bmacclurg for your review and feedback. We are thrilled you thought the course was in good shape and enjoyed the layout. We are currently working hard on the greens and hope you will come back and see us again soon with all the new improvements!
Great Day
Great day playing on a well groomed course. Challenging but not overly so.
Thank you David for your review and 5-stars. We are so happy you came out to play with us and we appreciate you taking the time to give us your feedback. Please come back and see us again very soon!
Great day for a Tarheel fan
Played UNC course today for the first time. Got a great price through group golfer. Course was awesome and loved the layout. Shot placement was critical and determined how you could attack the pins. Rough was manageable. Greens were not as fast as expected but rolled true. Played the blue tees which was about 6300 yds. Take this off my bucket list as a Tarheel Fan, and also played pretty good. Shot 72 , not bad for first time ever seeing the course. Yes ! I will be saving this scorecard.
Thank you Itzakeeper for the review and 4-stars. We are so happy you had a great time on the course. Please let us know if you ever need anything while you are here and we hope you will come back and see us again very soon!
Great layout and conditions
The course definitely maintains above average course conditions and pace of play. The design/layout is classic Fazio and does not disappoint.
The reason I give 3 stars is because I find it ridiculous that this course does not offer a 9 hole rate. They have totally alienated the business crowd that looks to fit in 9 after work. No one wants to pay full price just to walk 9 holes.
Golf in general is looking to "grow the game", but this will never work out if a course cannot offer nine hole rates.
Monday Golf
Great time to play on Monday. Even though the course was fully booked we played in under four hours. Great staff from the pro shop to the starter and rangers. I'll be back.
Thank you for your 5-star review and feedback. We appreciate you taking the time and are so happy you had a good time. Please let us know if you ever need anything while you are here and please come back and see us again soon!
Excellent Course
Course was in excellent condition very fair, what you see is what you get except for #16, stay on the left side of fairway. Do not overread break on greens.
Hi Jon6967269,
Thank you for your review and for playing at UNC Finley. It's great to hear that you enjoyed the conditions of the course. We hope to see you again soon!
Nice Course but Comparatively Expensive
Maybe my expectations were too high due to all the hype and accolades that Finley receives, but my reaction to this course, given the price, is a resounding . . . meh . . .. Seriously though, the staff was awesome. Folks in both the shop and grill were very friendly. The starter was quite nice, greeted us as we started our round, and gave us useful tips and information about the course. The course layout is really nice and the fairways and mulched areas are beautiful. There is plenty of cold water available on the course. But the greens were slow and some had brown spots. The course was very noisy. There were big fans, which I guess is a plus in some ways, but also lots of groundskeepers in loud, motorized equipment everywhere, at times crossing fairways in front of us. It seemed a bit odd as I almost never see such activity at any of the other courses we play, I assume because the other courses try to confine maintenance to early morning and late evening. My biggest concern is the price. Even with a special, we paid $36/person for 9 holes. That's a whopping $72 for half a round with an adult and junior playing. We normally play for $15-$45 total with a cart, and that’s sometimes 18 holes. Courses with these low fees include some that are generally considered pretty high-end, like the Preserve and Chapel Ridge, right down the road, since juniors are free with many of their specials. Some other courses are a little more but at least have discounted junior rates at certain times. There would be no cause to complain if Finley was a for-profit, privately owned golf course, but it is at least nominally affiliated with North Carolina’s University System. As a public resource its management should have a duty to our citizens to keep it accessible. Despite all this, I recommend any serious golfer in the Chapel Hill area give it a try. The experience was good enough that I would play it again given a good opportunity. Book a tee time on-line to get as good a price as you can.

Excellent condition
The fairways and greens were in excellent condition . The pace of play was fast.
Hi Ssantiagopr,

Well Worth Playing
The course was in excellent shape and is very fair. A couple of the holes are pretty hard but if you can keep it in play, it is a great course to play. We played cart path only so it was a little slower and wetter than normal but it was in great shape. The greens were very soft so you did not get much roll after it hit. The last few holes are very tough. I played on a Saturday morning at 8:30 and the grill was closed before the round. I was hoping to get a snack before hand. It was hot but they had plenty of drinking water on course. Very spoiled to have this quality of a course within driving distance.
Thank you for your 5 Star review! We are so happy to hear that you have had an enjoyable day with us. Please come back and play again soon!
Good but not at its best
Second time playing this course. Told my friends who tend to put prefer to the Duke course that Finley would be better. Love the layout. Course conditions from Teebox to fairways pretty good ; but greens too slow and sloppy and too many divots unfixed even for the price that we're paying on golf now.com despite what the golf pro say that the greens were OK. At the turn after the 12th hole we needed to get some drinks and get on with on the 13th but the young lady at the snack shop in the clubhouse were too content to talk on the phone rather than Acknowledge our presence and serve. We have to ask her to put the phone down so that we can buy drinks. Had a good round but mixed experience.
Hi dorknfreak,
We are happy to hear that you enjoyed our course layout conditions. We hope to see you back again soon for your next round!
Fine @ Finley
Best course in the area - well maintained and well managed - pay a little extra but you get what you pay for.
Hi wildstix86,

Great track!
Fun, well conditioned course. Friendly staff. No 10 layout was gimmicky, otherwise, this course is 5 stars!
Hi Skins2wiz,
We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your round. Come back and see us again soon!
Over priced and slow play
Course layout was really nice. Pace of play is ridiculous. If you have time for an all morning or all afternoon round then this is your course. Going to take 5-6 hrs on the weekend. Marshals didn't appear to move anybody. No beverage cart at all and if you wanted anything you had to wait until after 11th hole to preorder so you didn't lose your spot if the traffic jam of golfers backed up. The greens are bumpy and nobody appears to replace divots, making the greens rough to putt on at times. Do yourself a favor and only play on discounts or Golfnow. Prices are way over priced for what you get. Better courses in the area for a better price and pace of play!
We apologize for any inconvenience the pace of play may have caused you. We understand how frustrating that can be and we are working to improve our pace of play. We hope that you decide to come back and play with us again in the future and give us a second chance.
Felt like an Island Round
The course was in spectacular condition, not a brown spot or burnt grass anywhere. And in NC Summer heat, that's a big challenge. The greens were true. Long hitters should play the further tees. The starter was a little "amped up" but it was very minor. A great course and it felt, to me, like I was playing in the Caribbean.
Hi u000005052817,
Thanks for the five star review! We are very happy to hear that you enjoyed our course conditions here at Finley Golf Club. We hope to see you back again soon for your next round.
Well done!
This was my first visit and all I can say is that I was great! The course was in fantastic shape from tee boxes to greens. Fairways were well manicured, and the greens rolled true. Course was challenging but very playable from the blue tees. I wish people fixed their divots on the green as some par 3's had too many unaddressed ball marks. Value for the money and staff friendliness exceeded expectations. I'm definitely a fan and will make it part of my usual rotation.
Thanks for the five star review! We are very pleased to hear that you enjoyed our course conditions and layout. We are looking forward to seeing you back again soon!
Top notch golf course
Great layout, meticulously maintained, beautiful bent greens in excellent shape. Our round was painfully slow on this particular day. We couldn't quite figure out how we had so many groups backed up in front of us on a light rain/drizzly day. The course layout is one of the best in central NC and the conditions are always top notch, not unlike some of the private courses in the area. Makes it easier to accept the occasional slow round.
Hi JasonYates,
Thank you for choosing UNC Finley! We are so happy to hear that you consider the course's layout one of the best in central North Carolina. We hope to have you back again soon!
Nice course but very slow play
Very nice course, very nice folks, play was too slow
Hi Dimaurom,
Thank you for choosing UNC Finley. We are disappointed to hear that the pace of play was not up to par. Please email us at MichelleTeeTimes@gmail.com if you would like to further discuss. We hope to hear from you soon.
Nice Layout
Played this course while attending my daughters graduation from Duke. In spite of the rivalry between duke and UNC the starter was great and we felt very welcome. Layout of the course was very interesting and challenging. Greens were in good shape and rolled very well.
Would definitely play again.
