UNC Finley Golf Course
About
UNC Finley Golf Course is one of the top 20 collegiate courses in the country. The club offers a well conditioned comprehensive facility with a driving range, putting green, and chipping. Tom Fazio designed this challenging layout that is diverse enough to appeal to players of all skill levels. He included his trademark false fronts and greenside bunkers. To keep the golf course approachable, there are several different ways to play the bunkers and there are numerous risk-reward opportunities. Seven sets of tees ranging from about 5,000 to 7,300 yards make the course even more versatile. The 15th through the 17th are a beautiful stretch of holes that provide a formidable test as well. The excellent conditions are another feature of the UNC Finley golf course that has made it popular.

Golfer Reviews
Nice Layout
Played this course while attending my daughters graduation from Duke. In spite of the rivalry between duke and UNC the starter was great and we felt very welcome. Layout of the course was very interesting and challenging. Greens were in good shape and rolled very well.
Would definitely play again.
Best Bang for Your Buck
Excellent course - fairways, greens were in great shape. Will play again. Little slow due to twosomes on the course.
Hi TadWatson,
Thank you for your review and for choosing UNC FInley. We are happy to hear that you enjoyed the conditions of the course and that you'll be back! We look forward to seeing you again soon.
Wonderful course...
The layout is great, the conditions are wonderful and the Marshalls were wonderful. Great place to play and you will enjoy it.
Hi 4Mac4Golf,
Thank you for choosing UNC Finley! We are thrilled to hear that you enjoyed the course conditions and had such a wonderful experience. We hope to have you back again soon!
Great Tarheels golf
Challenging and interesting. Holes well laid out. Could lay up and be safe but if you went for the green, you had to be accurate. Well bunkered. Some water that did come into play. Greens were really fast but rolled very true. Old time course and very walkable. Most players did so. Can't wait to play it again.
Hi Jonespar,
Thank you for playing at UNC Finley. We are thrilled to hear that you enjoyed your experience! We would love to have you back again soon!
Great public coure
The fairways, greens, and tee boxes are green and in good shape. Layout is nice - wide fairways. The rough is too long - lost a ball rolling one foot off the fairway because I lost track of exact location. It unnecessarily slows the pace of play.
No food/beverage cart on week-day.
Hi James,

Golf at Finley
Started out very odd when checking in I overheard some regulars trying to get out a little earlier to include a forth that came with when my T time came up I found myself not being paired up with anyone when booking there was only space for one could of brought my buddy with as for the guy behind the counter basically just handed me my receipt no info about carts starting marshals not even where to go pace of play was slow when the marshal came bye treated it as normal as for the course a good test especially the back nine would of enjoyed it a whole lot more if it hadn't come across so clicky

Wonderfully Challenging
My 15 yo daughter and I played to finish off her HS season. It is a challenging course even when played from the tees correct for your driving distance. Enjoyed the round.
Hi William,
Thank you for playing at UNC Finley! We love hearing that you enjoyed your round with your daughter. We hope to have you both back again soon!
Great Shape Overall
The course was in great shape. A little soggy, but overall very good. The rough this time of year is BRUTAL! Just don't hit it in there. One negative comment would be the range mats. They need replacing badly! They are like hitting off of concrete. Usually, the grass is open, but I think that they were overseeding. Please replace the mats!
Hi Tad,
Thank you for your review! We are glad to hear that enjoyed the conditions of the course. We are constantly looking for ways to improve the course, thank you for your comments. We hope to see you again soon!
Great service
I use the Finley range all the time and play the course when I can get a good deal. The course is always in fantastic shape and the greens are the best in the area at rolling true. They are bent grass, so they get a little marked up, but no other greens I play roll as well.
I had a 440 tee time as a single and was hoping to be able to get 18 in, but it was Friday afternoon and there was a line to tee off. The starter/ranger offered to take me out to the 6th hole where it was open, that way I would be able to get ahead of the Fri afternoon crowd and finish my round. Such a big deal and such a smart thing to do. It was really appreciated.
Was able to get all 18 in walking because of that.
The front 9 (IMO) is really easy. The 9th hole's second shot is tough, but that's about it. The back 9 is a whole different story. It has 4 very tough holes (10, 11, 15 and 16 IMO).
Anyways, had a great round, had a great day and really appreciate Finley and its staff helping me out.
Hi Jordan,
Thank you for your great review! We strive for great customer service and are so happy to hear that you had such a great experience. We look forward to having you back again!
Worth every Penny!
I've wanted to play this course for some time and finally got the chance. The greens had been punched two weeks prior and we're in superb condition. The fairways were cut down and was in awe every time I got to the next hole. I did hate the ruff though. The rough will swallow your ball up and allow for you to have to take a drop more than once if you don't track it. I would play this course more often, but the long drive doesn't permit for it. You won't be dissapointed when you play here. Truly an amazing course.
Hi Texasfan,
We are thrilled that you finally got the chance to play at UNC Finley Golf Club. It's great to hear that you enjoyed the conditions of our course. We hope you make the drive to see us again!
Kind of Disappointed
I had high hopes coming to UNC but it was nothing special. I think Duke and NC state have superior golf courses and facilities. The course here was fairly easy given its a University course. The overall conditions were pretty good, some winter kill here and there, being more prominent on the greens. The whole experience was just lackluster given that this course is rated very highly in the state. The practice facilities were in my opinion subpar given its "UNC". If you can find a good deal on golfnow I would recommend but I would never pay rack rates for this course, I would however pay rack for Duke and NC state.
HI Badger,

On of my favorite courses
Great course. The tee boxes and fairways were in great shape. The greens had been punched within the past few days but were very playable. The rough is thick, as in you can step on your ball and not see it thick, so that added a challenge not found at many of the other local courses.
No complaints about UNC Finley, definitely one of my favorite courses in the area and in the best shape of any of the courses I have played this summer.
Hi Tarheel86,
Thank you for your review. We are so happy to hear that our course is one of your favorites! We truly appreciate that. We'd love to have you back soon.
Beautiful course
I love playing this course it's scenic and challenging.
Easy to get out in mid week.
They could use more water stations.
Hi Murphyslaw48,
We are so happy to hear that you enjoyed the condition and challenge of the course! We hope to have you back soon!
Stay on the Short Grass
This is a fantastic Tom Fazio redesign. Bermuda fairways and rough and bent grass greens. I repaired a few pitch marks left by groups ahead of us but the staff had done a good job overnight fixing them up. The greens had subtle breaks easy to over-read and rolled true. The rough had just been cut, was 3-4" deep and just swallowed the ball. Approach shots held well but miss a green and you need a flop shot in your bag to score. Compares favorably with Pinehurst #5. Bunkers would benefit from more sand, somewhat less densely packed but the total experience is very satisfying. I hope to get back to Finley as I expect to be in Chapel Hill again soon.
We hope when you come back to Chapel Hill you will return to our course as well. You left some great pointers for our golfers!
Slow
Course is in great shape. Greens rolled nicely and fairways were borderline perfect. However, it took 3 1/2 hours to play nine holes!! Teed off at 3:00 on Saturday. No ranger in sight. If anytime called for ejecting someone for slow play this round would have been the poster child. Group in front of us made the day memorable for all the wrong reasons.
We are sorry to hear about the group you played behind and that you did not see our Ranger. Pleae email me directly for more information at michelleteetimes@gmail.com
great course but very slow pace of play
Great course in great shape. Unfortunately played 9 behind foursome that had almost 2 holes open in front of them. Took almost 3 hours to play nine. Rangers should have made them skip a hole or two, or leave.
We are sorry to hear the group you played behind that caused a slower pace of play but happy to hear everything else was great. Please email me directly at michelleteetimes@gmail.com
Finley 7/25/15
One of my favorite courses to play, first time I've played it this year. Tee boxes and fairways were in great shape but the majority of the greens were chewed up more than normal. I was very surprised at this, which means golfers you need to do your part and fix your divots and course management do whatever it is you do to help repair them quickly! The most upsetting thing was that all of the water coolers were empty. We tee'd off around 4, the starter repeatedly stated drink plenty of water! Stay hydrated pretty hard to do when you can't refill your water bottle and didn't have a food and beverage cart going around. Also the grill closed at 6 so as we were making the turn we had to get leftover food. UNC has the best grill at a golf course I've had and it was disappointing not to be able to get anything at 6:20pm on a Saturday afternoon. I make it a point to be hungry at the turn the food Is so good. I can understand weekdays closing at that time but on a Saturday during golf season I expected to get some fresh food at a course with Finleys reputation. If you've never played I highley recommend it, the layout and conditions are overall good, if you play in the afternoon just bring plenty of water in case you catch a bad scenario like we did.
We are glad to hear that we are one of your favroite courses to play but our apologies for your out of the ordinary experience this round. Please email me directly to find out more information at michelleteetimes@gmail.com
Slow play
The rough was too high. Hard to find balls and slowed play
It is unfortunate to hear you lost some balls during your round which slowed your pace of play. Please email me directly so we can find out more details about your round at michelleteetimes@gmail.com
Great experience
As a person who has only been golfing for less than 12 months, I wanted to play a very challenging course just to see how I would do. I loved the experience. I was paired with one of the workers at the club and two regulars. They were very patient with me and gave me great pointers on improving my game which helped the experience even more. I look froward to playing here again.
Course in nice shape
Course is in best shape of the year. It feels and plays like a premium coastal course.
Very nice to hear you compare Finley to a Premium coastal course and feel we are in the best shape of the year. It is great to hear this feedback from our golfers!
Hi Tmsaxton,
Thank you for playing at UNC Finley. It is great to hear that you felt welcomed and enjoyed the layout of the course. We hope to have you back again soon, rivalry and all!
