UNC Finley Golf Course
About
UNC Finley Golf Course is one of the top 20 collegiate courses in the country. The club offers a well conditioned comprehensive facility with a driving range, putting green, and chipping. Tom Fazio designed this challenging layout that is diverse enough to appeal to players of all skill levels. He included his trademark false fronts and greenside bunkers. To keep the golf course approachable, there are several different ways to play the bunkers and there are numerous risk-reward opportunities. Seven sets of tees ranging from about 5,000 to 7,300 yards make the course even more versatile. The 15th through the 17th are a beautiful stretch of holes that provide a formidable test as well. The excellent conditions are another feature of the UNC Finley golf course that has made it popular.

On of my favorite courses
Great course. The tee boxes and fairways were in great shape. The greens had been punched within the past few days but were very playable. The rough is thick, as in you can step on your ball and not see it thick, so that added a challenge not found at many of the other local courses.
No complaints about UNC Finley, definitely one of my favorite courses in the area and in the best shape of any of the courses I have played this summer.
Beautiful course
I love playing this course it's scenic and challenging.
Easy to get out in mid week.
They could use more water stations.
Hi Murphyslaw48,
We are so happy to hear that you enjoyed the condition and challenge of the course! We hope to have you back soon!
Stay on the Short Grass
This is a fantastic Tom Fazio redesign. Bermuda fairways and rough and bent grass greens. I repaired a few pitch marks left by groups ahead of us but the staff had done a good job overnight fixing them up. The greens had subtle breaks easy to over-read and rolled true. The rough had just been cut, was 3-4" deep and just swallowed the ball. Approach shots held well but miss a green and you need a flop shot in your bag to score. Compares favorably with Pinehurst #5. Bunkers would benefit from more sand, somewhat less densely packed but the total experience is very satisfying. I hope to get back to Finley as I expect to be in Chapel Hill again soon.
We hope when you come back to Chapel Hill you will return to our course as well. You left some great pointers for our golfers!
Slow
Course is in great shape. Greens rolled nicely and fairways were borderline perfect. However, it took 3 1/2 hours to play nine holes!! Teed off at 3:00 on Saturday. No ranger in sight. If anytime called for ejecting someone for slow play this round would have been the poster child. Group in front of us made the day memorable for all the wrong reasons.
We are sorry to hear about the group you played behind and that you did not see our Ranger. Pleae email me directly for more information at michelleteetimes@gmail.com
great course but very slow pace of play
Great course in great shape. Unfortunately played 9 behind foursome that had almost 2 holes open in front of them. Took almost 3 hours to play nine. Rangers should have made them skip a hole or two, or leave.
We are sorry to hear the group you played behind that caused a slower pace of play but happy to hear everything else was great. Please email me directly at michelleteetimes@gmail.com
Finley 7/25/15
One of my favorite courses to play, first time I've played it this year. Tee boxes and fairways were in great shape but the majority of the greens were chewed up more than normal. I was very surprised at this, which means golfers you need to do your part and fix your divots and course management do whatever it is you do to help repair them quickly! The most upsetting thing was that all of the water coolers were empty. We tee'd off around 4, the starter repeatedly stated drink plenty of water! Stay hydrated pretty hard to do when you can't refill your water bottle and didn't have a food and beverage cart going around. Also the grill closed at 6 so as we were making the turn we had to get leftover food. UNC has the best grill at a golf course I've had and it was disappointing not to be able to get anything at 6:20pm on a Saturday afternoon. I make it a point to be hungry at the turn the food Is so good. I can understand weekdays closing at that time but on a Saturday during golf season I expected to get some fresh food at a course with Finleys reputation. If you've never played I highley recommend it, the layout and conditions are overall good, if you play in the afternoon just bring plenty of water in case you catch a bad scenario like we did.
We are glad to hear that we are one of your favroite courses to play but our apologies for your out of the ordinary experience this round. Please email me directly to find out more information at michelleteetimes@gmail.com
Slow play
The rough was too high. Hard to find balls and slowed play
It is unfortunate to hear you lost some balls during your round which slowed your pace of play. Please email me directly so we can find out more details about your round at michelleteetimes@gmail.com
Great experience
As a person who has only been golfing for less than 12 months, I wanted to play a very challenging course just to see how I would do. I loved the experience. I was paired with one of the workers at the club and two regulars. They were very patient with me and gave me great pointers on improving my game which helped the experience even more. I look froward to playing here again.
Course in nice shape
Course is in best shape of the year. It feels and plays like a premium coastal course.
Very nice to hear you compare Finley to a Premium coastal course and feel we are in the best shape of the year. It is great to hear this feedback from our golfers!
Excellent Shape
Finley is in excellent shape. The rough is up in spots so you have to control your ball and be aware. The back 9 is especially challenging and you have to be able to hit all the clubs in your bag. Fantastic course.
UNC Finley is thirlled to hear you especially enjoy the back 9 and you utilize every club in your bag!
Beautiful course, outstanding staff
One of our favorites! Course was beautiful and although we were rained out, we look forward to returning soon on a rain check!
So sorry to hear your round got rained out and we look forward to having you back as well when the weather permits!
Course in great shape
2 things! We had to hit off of mats at the range, which I have no problem with, but the mats were completely worn out, they looked 20 years old. They close the grill @ 1:30 and make food to just sit there for the rest of the day! The food was awful! If you're going to charge an arm & leg for the food at least make it editable! The course was in awesome shape & the staff was great.
We are always looking at ways to improve and we appreciate your feedback about the range mats and food. Glad you enjoy the shape of the course and our staff!
great course
really helpful staff, pace was good and the course is in excellent condition. We were rained out after 9 and look forward to coming back.
We appreciate you playing our course during the holiday weekend and it's unfortunate you got rained out mid way through your round. We will be delighted to have you back when the weather conditions are better!
Very nice.
A very nice condition course. Designed for lots of play as most of the trouble is off to the sides. Greens were average on speed but had several ball marks.
Thank you for your comments on the condition of the course. We hope to see you again soon!
Great course! Played for $28.00 and plan on going back!
Great cours! Played for $28.00 and plan on going back!
We are happy to hear that you enjoyed the course and plan on coming back!
Great course
Beautiful course, super Golfnow deal at $49. Challenging but fair, very scenic. We played in the afternoon and never had to wait for anyone. We arrived early and they moved our tee time up an hour. Friendly staff and the food is very good in the clubhouse.
Thank you for the kind review. Glad we were able to get you out early!
Great course at good value
Reserved 18 by myself with no one behind for 20 mins. Tee time 1.40pm Thursday. Starter informative and helpful. After my first tee shot a player drove up in his cart and joined me. He was in his mid to late 60s but said he had played golf since he was 8. Used to be a scratch golfer on a college team and later was highly ranked in men's USGA competition. He shot a little over par and outdrove me at 260 yards several times. His short game and putting were immaculate. Even though I'm a 20 hcper he was patient and helped me find some of my errant shots. Knew the course so he was able to advise me on how to play some holes. He was friendly and made a perfect golf companion. This was my lucky day...you don't always get to play with a great golfer and it put a nice shine on a course with some beautiful holes. It took us only a little more than THREE hours to complete the round. A twosome in front at #6 waved us through.
Before and after the round I practiced on the range, good value at $5 for 45 balls. The mats had tee holders so I didn't need to search for a rubber tee of the right length for my drives...I just popped a plastic tee in the holder. Food at the turn (after hole #11) was the usual GC junk but there are a decent cafe and bar in the clubhouse.
Greens had giant fans to cool you off. Fairways in very good shape, quite wide on some of the front 9. The back 9 are tougher. Rough not deep. Sand consistent and well maintained. Only two water holes. From the blue men's tees, total distance ~6500 yards.
It was 92 degrees and humid. After I played I was pleasantly surprised to be able to take a shower and use a big free towel from the pro shop. Staff was courteous and helpful
The only things I would change would be:
1) add GPS to the electric carts so you know how far you are from the pin.
2) Add distance markers at 200 and 100 yards from the greens. The only markers are at 150 yards. Change them: they are flat, oversized golf ball-shaped caps that are difficult to see unless you're close to them. You must guess your distance or use a rangefinder. (this is the home course of the NC Tar Heels so maybe they won't do that ?)
3) Add distance markers to the driving range flags, or use colored flags and post signs that say how far they are. There are no distance indicators which was odd.
Overall one of the best courses I've ever played, equal to good private courses and the best public courses costing much more. And a great bargain for my $48 course and cart fee.
Great to hear you enjoyed the golfer you were paired up with. We always appreciate feedback so thank you for all of the tips!
Fairways near perfect
The only thing that kept it from being absolutely perfect were the aierated greens which are a necessary evil. And they were not that bad.
We hope you come back soon now that the greens have been aerated to get a perfect review instead of near perfect!
It was great
It was great. Playing in the moring was a good experience for me. Nice weather, nice people and beatiful course...
Glad you had an overall nice time during your round! Come back and visit us soon!
Love this course
Played here several times and always enjoyed it. They had punched the greens a week before but it didn't affect play. Course was in good condition despite some winter kill which has plagued area courses. Pace of play was good and only waited on last few holes.
Glad to hear you always enjoy your round with us!
Hi Tarheel86,
