UNC Finley Golf Course

About
UNC Finley Golf Course is one of the top 20 collegiate courses in the country. The club offers a well conditioned comprehensive facility with a driving range, putting green, and chipping. Tom Fazio designed this challenging layout that is diverse enough to appeal to players of all skill levels. He included his trademark false fronts and greenside bunkers. To keep the golf course approachable, there are several different ways to play the bunkers and there are numerous risk-reward opportunities. Seven sets of tees ranging from about 5,000 to 7,300 yards make the course even more versatile. The 15th through the 17th are a beautiful stretch of holes that provide a formidable test as well. The excellent conditions are another feature of the UNC Finley golf course that has made it popular.

Staff went above and beyond to make our experience great!
Fine day at Finley
Played here for the first time. Had watched the course overhaul during the past 2 years and was curious of the results. The tees and greens were great, the fairways tight and the rough and bunkers very difficult to escape. Played 18 in just over 4.5 hours. The new GPS carts made it easy to plan your shots. Not a lot of water or elevation changes made it easy to find the bad hits. Hope to play again in the fall once the leaves change and it gets cooler. Pro shop and restaurant is well stocked and reasonable. Planning on taking a few lessons at the training facility.
Decent but overpriced
First time playing Finley. The practice amenities are solid, nice that they’re included in the greens fees. Course layout is fun and challenging; however, the course conditions are very average and for the price that is charged, it’s tough to justify playing here again. The cart fees are particularly egregious at $30 per player for 18 holes.
Finley
Course conditions were hilariously bad for the price to play. I’ll be choosing any other course in the future. ANY other course
Fun and fair course
This course can play very tough from the tips, but very fair from the mid-tees if you are an average golfer. The starter did a great job of keeping us informed of our position and keeping things on time. He did this in a very friendly way. Once on the course, it can be a little slow depending on the day and time, but we weren't in a hurry so it didn't bother us. Definitely check it out if you're in the area.
I want my money back.
I want my money back. The worst run public course ever. They want you to pay to use the practice green? 30 min to get a dog at the turn? Post round, you gotta pay for water?
Renovation? Meh
Course is not improved after the renovation. The revised back nine (now the front 9) feels cramped and contrived with the shoehorning in of additional holes. The greens are wilder but the course itself is more bland, with the elimination of much of Fazio's bunkering and replacement with DL3's trademark blandness. Turf is very firm now post renovation; some time is needed for the greens to settle and regain some receptiveness. It is still a decent University course, but don't expect it to be moving up in any national rankings.
Finley
Thot the course was over priced. Funky lay out. Holes one and three were par threes. First side par 34. Plenty of cold drinking water on course. Starter was very friendly.
Poorly Run Course
Not a fan of the redesign. Not a fan of management. They don't answer the phone, they don't answer emails. When I confronted the lady in charge of membership about an issue she told me to email her to set up a time to talk. The issue with that is over the last 9 months I must have emailed 50 times about issues with tee times, my wife fell into a sink hole on #17 bunker, I emailed about that and got no response. I emailed 30 times wanting lessons for my wife and I and never got a response. I am rambling but want to vent. They are raising their prices a lot while my unc paycheck isn't moving so I'm out as a member. Maybe that will open up some tee times for the rest of you. Lol when I went to pay for my membership they actually told me that I was second to the golf team and that the course will close and tee times could be cancelled or bumped for the golf team. They didn't word it in a great way. The whole experience was awful. Heck, now, after being a member for a year, they want me to pay an initiation fee every 3 years to be member. I don't think they understand what the word initiation actually means. At least their grill is finally open after 9 months of waiting. Someone dropped the ball on that. But don't go at the turn, you'll be inside for a half hour. I could go on but I won't.
Thank you for your detailed review! We're thrilled you enjoyed the course and amenities, and we look forward to welcoming you back in the fall for another round and lessons at our training facility.
