UNC Finley Golf Course

About
UNC Finley Golf Course is one of the top 20 collegiate courses in the country. The club offers a well conditioned comprehensive facility with a driving range, putting green, and chipping. Tom Fazio designed this challenging layout that is diverse enough to appeal to players of all skill levels. He included his trademark false fronts and greenside bunkers. To keep the golf course approachable, there are several different ways to play the bunkers and there are numerous risk-reward opportunities. Seven sets of tees ranging from about 5,000 to 7,300 yards make the course even more versatile. The 15th through the 17th are a beautiful stretch of holes that provide a formidable test as well. The excellent conditions are another feature of the UNC Finley golf course that has made it popular.

Hmm…
Well, first time out since the renovation. First the good, the course is in very good shape right now, the greens are hard as a rock but are still receptive and roll good. I was a bit shocked by the re routing. The nines are reversed and they ruined the old back nine, now the front. Basically they jammed 11 holes in what was previously 9. Hole number one is a par 3, really bizarre for me. So, still a nice course for sure but wow, I can’t believe someone signed off on the reroute but I don’t know all the facts
Excellent Greens
Greens are in superb condition. Rest of course very good condition....rough is very dense. GPS in the cart didn't work, guy in the clubhouse didn't tell us we were starting on #10!!!!! Pace of play very average....4 1/2 hours....waited at least 30 minutes during the round. Still think they should reverse the 9's.
The only problem was the $75 plus tax for the rental clubs. The rest was awesome!
Surprisingly short so even mid range hitters need to move back to play to 6500. Nice greens, nice layout., not crowded (weekday). Just wish it was a bit closer to play it regularly. Great day.
Fantastic Course!!!! I'm a DUKE fan but I will be be back!
I don't like anything Tarheel related but this course has changed that. Great layout! Great Conditions! What more can you ask for! Well done UNC!...That was harder to type then I thought it would be.
The Players (People)
The staff and the players that I was paired with made my experience GREAT! First time to N.C. and the course and I played the front 9 with 2 people I didn't know and I played the back 9 with another group of 2 people. I found out none of had ever met and I had the time of my life with them all. When I return, I'll be sure to play again. Love the course even though all the rain made it cart-path only. It was an overall great experience.
N8~
UNC Finley in great shape for upcoming women's tournament
The UNC Finley course is in really good shape heading into the women's Ruth Chris tournament in early October. The greens are generally in really good shape. The bermuda rough is tough. In some places, your ball can nestle down and you can only see the ball when you are standing within 6 feet of it. Keep it in the fairway at all costs.
UNC Finley-New Layout
PlayedUNC Finley for the first time after they redid the course. The staff was very friendly, the practice range was from mats except for the pitching area. The Bent Grass greens were quick but true. A fun course that was changed by moving the back nine to the front, starting with a Par 3 (former #12) as 1. The rough was long enough to create a challenge if you were unlucky enough to get in it, with needing a good eye in finding mis-hit (lost) balls. A course that is fun to play.
Best public in the area
Very fun to play. Greens are a bit rough in spots but otherwise phenomenal public course. Fast greens, difficult rough, nicely maintained otherwise (rough maybe a bit too high, might need mowing, balls are frequently lost a few feet from the green or fairway)
Great course but lacking ammenities
Finley golf course is in wonderful shape. However, membership and guest fees are expensive and there are several simple things that need to be done to justify the price. These include, having some ball cleaners on the course, filling the water stands (very often completely empty), and answering the pro shop phone (very rarely do I not go into voicemail). Also the clubhouse / restaurant is in serious need of some management. The menu is pathetic (hot dogs and chips) and generally not a place a golfer wants to unwind after a round of golf. I hate to say it (as a UNC alumni) but Duke runs their course a lot more professionally.
