UNC Finley Golf Course
About
UNC Finley Golf Course is one of the top 20 collegiate courses in the country. The club offers a well conditioned comprehensive facility with a driving range, putting green, and chipping. Tom Fazio designed this challenging layout that is diverse enough to appeal to players of all skill levels. He included his trademark false fronts and greenside bunkers. To keep the golf course approachable, there are several different ways to play the bunkers and there are numerous risk-reward opportunities. Seven sets of tees ranging from about 5,000 to 7,300 yards make the course even more versatile. The 15th through the 17th are a beautiful stretch of holes that provide a formidable test as well. The excellent conditions are another feature of the UNC Finley golf course that has made it popular.

Renovation? Meh
Course is not improved after the renovation. The revised back nine (now the front 9) feels cramped and contrived with the shoehorning in of additional holes. The greens are wilder but the course itself is more bland, with the elimination of much of Fazio's bunkering and replacement with DL3's trademark blandness. Turf is very firm now post renovation; some time is needed for the greens to settle and regain some receptiveness. It is still a decent University course, but don't expect it to be moving up in any national rankings.
Finley
Thot the course was over priced. Funky lay out. Holes one and three were par threes. First side par 34. Plenty of cold drinking water on course. Starter was very friendly.
Poorly Run Course
Not a fan of the redesign. Not a fan of management. They don't answer the phone, they don't answer emails. When I confronted the lady in charge of membership about an issue she told me to email her to set up a time to talk. The issue with that is over the last 9 months I must have emailed 50 times about issues with tee times, my wife fell into a sink hole on #17 bunker, I emailed about that and got no response. I emailed 30 times wanting lessons for my wife and I and never got a response. I am rambling but want to vent. They are raising their prices a lot while my unc paycheck isn't moving so I'm out as a member. Maybe that will open up some tee times for the rest of you. Lol when I went to pay for my membership they actually told me that I was second to the golf team and that the course will close and tee times could be cancelled or bumped for the golf team. They didn't word it in a great way. The whole experience was awful. Heck, now, after being a member for a year, they want me to pay an initiation fee every 3 years to be member. I don't think they understand what the word initiation actually means. At least their grill is finally open after 9 months of waiting. Someone dropped the ball on that. But don't go at the turn, you'll be inside for a half hour. I could go on but I won't.
Disappointed
The staff was very helpful and friendly. However, the course design is interesting as several of the greens overlap or are in line with tee boxes making the experience unnerving at times. For the fanfare and cost we were expecting the fairways and greens to be in much better condition. Several areas were brown or bare. The pace of play was fairly slow because of a group or two. We never saw an on-course ranger to move play along. Given this experience we do not plan to return anytime soon.
New Finley
The new layout was alright, the only hole I didnt like was the 3rd par 3 on the front, it felt like they ran out of space and had to squeeze it in. The new greens were fantastic, I loved them. Fairways and bunkers. I gave the course a 5 star it was prob more of a 4.5 but I didnt think it would be fair to give it 4 stars.
We're glad you enjoyed the new greens and appreciate your feedback on the 3rd hole; we're always looking for ways to improve. Thank you for the 5-star review and for taking the time to share your thoughts!
Good course - undecided about new layout
Overall I think the course is fun and certainly in good shape. Haven’t made up my mind on how I feel about the opening holes (new renovation and routing) . You play 3 par 3’s and a very short par 4 in forst 7 holes. The new practice facility is very nice but generally only available if you buy a half-day range pass. I was given a pass with my round on this visit which allowed me to hit a few balls to warm up before my round. I’m not sure if this is the new policy or not. I didn’t arrive early enough to hit more than 25 balls and didn’t use the short game area. I hope the club decided to continue allowing golfers at least the opportunity to hit some warm up balls. I don’t expect to be able to use the full range or short game area after my round (without paying for a pass) - but if I spend $150 to play 18 I do expect to get some range balls before the round.
Otherwise service was good and pace of play was good. I didn’t eat in the grill and cannot comment on the new food options.
Thank you for your feedback and for noting our course's condition and practice facilities. We appreciate your thoughts on the opening holes and range pass policy and will consider your suggestions as we strive to enhance the golfer experience.
Class
Most expensive course in the area but you get what you pay for. Great practice facilities, course conditions and starter was super friendly and helpful
Fun course
The course has been recently reconfigured to make more space for the UNC team. It’s fun and has some very long and challenging par 4. Tough greens. Wasn’t in perfect shape, apparently recovering from a recent tournament they hosted.
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We apologize for the condition of the course as it recovers from the recent tournament, and we're glad you enjoyed the new layout and challenges.
Nice condition great greens
Good practice facility. Nice layout good pace of play
Improving Conditions
Second time playing the renovation. The heat has done wonders for the fairways....Bermuda greens are excellent. Since my last play in March, there are yardage markers on most of the sprinkler heads and GPS in the carts. Still think they should flip the nines back to the original layout. Pricey place to play unless you luck into a Hot Deal.
An excellent golf course
I'm a member at Finley and love the new greens complexes. Despite heavy play, the fairways and greens are always in excellent shape. It's also a wonderful walking course. The staff is top notch - friendly and helpful, and they all go above and beyond to make your visit to Finley an enjoyable and memorable experience. Without a doubt one of the best tracks in the area.
Thank you for your kind words and for noticing our efforts to maintain the course in excellent condition. We're thrilled to hear you enjoy playing at Finley and appreciate our staff's dedication to providing a memorable experience.
Cart path only needs to be made clear
The course is apparently cart path only and the cart sort of knows where the path is. However this is unclear as only some holes are marked as such. I figured out after several annoying experiences that this was the case. The starter needs to make this clear.
The new layout is Ok though the new par 3 6th is extremely difficult to judge due to not being able to see the flag to laser it. GPS gave Wierd results.
We apologize for the confusion regarding the cart path and the difficulty with the new par 3; thank you for bringing these points to our attention. We appreciate your feedback and are working to make improvements.
Just unwrapped
Like a new toy, all the corners and edges are fresh and undamaged. Tough but fair Tee2Green, the greens are at times diabolical.
Thank you for your insightful review! We're glad to hear you've enjoyed the challenge our course presents and will take your feedback about the greens into consideration.
Rework still needs work
All in all Finley is a good to above average course. Costs seem a bit high but such is life. Some of the greens made no sense and there are wholes which wildly overlap each other so you feel like you are teeing off over groups sometimes. Greens had some rough patches but played pretty well. A few tee boxes need some extra work as some are more rounded than flat.
Thank you for your feedback on our course and pricing. We take note of your comments on the greens and tee boxes and will work to improve these areas.
Thank you for your feedback. We're glad you found our staff friendly and helpful, but we regret the concerns you had about the course layout and conditions. We’re addressing the maintenance issues and working on pace-of-play improvements. We hope to welcome you back in the future with a better experience.
