Something happened to the greens. Tee to green is great but the greens are now garbage. One of last courses to still have bent grass greens and probably just too hot for that? Actually still putt ok, but large patches of dirt. Not sure is plan is to let them go and change out to a summer grass?
Let's be honest about "the issues".
I am 60 years old and have never encountered worse greens in my life. If you decide to play here after reading this review, be forewarned that you will be putting on cratered and cracked mud (if its dry) or packed down mud (if it rains, which it did all day on and off today). This is way beyond a "maintenance issue". What we have here is years upon years of neglect. I could build a better green in my backyard with a shovel. STAY AWAY. This course is not coming back anytime soon. A complete rebuild is required.
It's a shame, because the rest of the course is 4 out of 5 stars.
Great Course
We had a great time at Olde Sycamore. The course was fun and beautiful.
Worst course in Charlotte
There are so many better courses in Charlotte, I payed $28 and still felt ripped off. Course was in terrible shape before it started pouring, then on the 4th hole when it started pouring at 3:30, I called about a rain check and it apparently was too late and was going to “clear up”. Other courses in the area would not give you this treatment and act this way when a flash flood happens. You probably couldn’t pay me to go back. Only a 5 star pace of play because of how few people were there.
Terrible Greens
Charge a hefty price or having terrible greens. $72/person for a round of golf, and greens are all dried and patchy.
Greens
I love the course layout, but the greens are in horrific condition. Hope they can figure it out because I really like the course.
Greens are a little rough at the moment. I think they are growing them back rn, it was half mud on a majority of greens on the front nine
Challenging Layout
The course is nice and well maintained. They are having a few issues currently with their greens but I’m sure it is heat and drought related.
The course has a great layout . The tee boxes and fairways were very nice . The greens were horrendous. You can’t be charging a premium when you have greens you lost
Great course!
Nice fairways, generous.
Greens are ‘healing’ from hot weather
Staff was friendly.
i enjoyed the course and would love to play again when the greens are in better shape, with that said even though are burnt out the ball rolled true on most. fun course and thank you for the discounted rate.
Golf Day
Played a great round of golf with my teen sons. Had a great time and the course was fantastic!
Greens are in rough shape overwatered moldy and bare patches other than that the course was in good shape. Most bunkers were in good shape.
A good ‘public’ option BUT…
I call this my home course. I have played this golf course since it opened, so probably more than 100 rounds. Cutting to the chase…PRESERVE and FIX the terribly inconsistent putting surfaces! Stop charging $99 for a round of golf in the AM…never is this course worth $99…unless major inconsistency is addressed. Back to the greens…..The greens at OSGP have ALWAYS been subpar. Fairways and bunkers are in decent shape and they have made improvements on some holes to make some of the holes a bit more playable… (#2 and #7) by removing some of the landscaping around the greens. The groundskeeping team keeps the bunkers and fairways in pretty decent shape. (Bermuda fairways and fluffy white sand for the most part.) Green side bunkers are inconsistent, but at least there is enough sand in them to effectively exit them using typical sand techniques. Fix the greens PLEASE!!! My biggest gripe is not the fact that they have bent grass greens, (which I absolutely love playing ion and make a lot of putts on BGG. However, rarely do you experience these greens when they are not under stress, spongy, slow, and not to mention the massive amounts of ball marks that go un-repaired. Of course this is not the golf courses problem… its the golfers that play golf here that don’t know how to repair ball marks. I played last Sat and today, and TODAY they did acknowledge the greens are in bad, no almost unplayable shape and gave a discount. However, I did not expect to have more than 2/3rds of the greens to be literally unplayable because of external stresses on these greens. One frustration on the signature par 3 was there was little more than half of a effective green surface to play… pin placement was literally on an incline on the worst part of the green…. On this particular day, the starter was very friendly and again explained the situation with the greens to us and thanked us for being there to play. I wish the people taking my money in the clubhouse cared enough to engage beyond a ‘transactional conversation’ ….cash or credit? Insert your card…yada yada… and would attempt to get to know their customer better. Back to the greens…I would hate to see them switch over to a Tiff Eagle Bermuda green … Because I love bent grass cause then the rate to play would probably be $125 in the AM…and $75 in the PM… the course is not $100 around golf course… Even with pristine conditions and if greens were replaced… $65 to $80 would be good value. If your listening OSGP…fix the greens… re-tool a few holes and tidy up some obvious ‘penalty’ areas to make balls easier to find and play out of …and encourage twilight golf, practice area improvement (like top-tracer range) and lights on the driving range. Make it a GREAT alternative to joining a private club!
Quirky but fun layout. Unfortunately the greens are toast right now.
3rd hole may need a fan on the green because it is surrounded by trees and doesn't have enough airflow to dry it out. That was the worst green.
Once they come back, this course will be a gem. Staff was great.
Good course in the Spring
This course plays well in the spring while the greens are in good shape. Their greens get burnt out every summer and turn into a mud pit. One occasion I got rained out and had to have a confrontation with staff to get a rain check.
Summer Heat
The course has been impacted by the heat. The greens are in tough condition. The rest of the course is holding up well. It should recover if when we get a break from the summer heat wave
Mud for greens
Greens were mostly dirt and no notice of such poor conditions before play. Would not pay full price with such poor green quality.
