The Currituck Club
About
The Currituck Club has a Rees Jones-designed layout that stands out from other Outer Banks courses, mostly thanks to its ideal location along the Currituck Sound. The golf course shares the landscape with an abundance of wildlife including deer, osprey, geese, and turtles. Golfers might even catch a glimpse of an eagle soaring overhead. The layout tumbles across rolling sand dunes and combined with the seaside location, the golf course offers a true links feel that is reminiscent of traditional Scottish courses. The diverse coastal terrain is covered with maritime forests and wetlands. The holes are both challenging and scenic, especially the seventh through the ninth, which sit right along the Sound. The golf course also finishes on the Sound with a scenic closing stretch. Playing The Currituck Club right at sundown will provide unrivaled views.

Poor conditions
Good staff, friendly and accommodating. Started off using range, was forced to hit from moderate downhill lie, when a large portion of hitting area available. We played from back tees, about 6800 yards, and the tee boxes were poor. Fairways needed some work also, with many being burnt. Greens were full of ball marks, not courses fault, and were very slow. Played in the afternoon, which most likely played a big role in that. Paid $65 on GolfNow, which was worth it. Would not pay full fee to play at this time. Very windy course, which travels within a residential community.
CHW III
The course was in overall pretty good shape, there were some holes on the course that were roped off due to winter hardship: these were ground under repair.
Important for player to determine which tee box to play from as the course obviously gets more difficult from the tees further back, we played from the Blue tees. I enjoyed the course and the play only took four hours and it was steady play and fairly packed.
I would strongly suggest early play if playing in the summer as it got to 101* the day we played.
Due to course conditions we received a discount, fees include cart and range balls (you have to request them).
I am not sure that I would pay regular price but it is the only course on the island and the scenery is great.
Wonderful time, fun course
My son-in-law and I played this course while on vacation. What a great course layout! Excellent fun and not too challenging. We will play this course every time we’re in OBX
So many repairs
Everything about this course was great except for the condition it was in. Some of the holes were cart path only for no other reason than the replacement of new said. The new said looked like it had seen better days as well. The layout and course setup are wonderful. With different tees for different level golfers. The conditions need to improve. If I would have known the conditions before hand I would not have paid 20 bucks to play this course. Do not pay full price ever for this course it is not worth the price especially if the conditions do not improve.
Great soundfront course
Beautiful and challenging golf course. I play 160 rounds per year at multiple courses, and this is one of the most challenging courses. Six holes run along the Currituck Sound. Beautiful wildlife, deer, osprey, snakes (yikes), and an occasional bald eagle! Very friendly staff. A nice grille room for lunch or dinner, and a full bar. It does not get any better.
OBX vacay
Excellent course just in a state of repair at the time we played; two holes changed to par 3 due to tee box repair. I am certain this is a stellar course when all repairs are behind them
Decent, but in rough shape
Second time playing this course. Excellent facility, friendly staff. Course had a rough winter I suppose. Course doing a lot of repairs (sod on multiple holes, two/three holes tee boxes were closed/par 4 & 5s turned in to par 3s). Was expecting a lot more.
Quality OBX Course, Great Scenery
All greens recently aerated and fairways on a few holes were under major repair. Course still very playable and looking forward to next year. Good course layout with great scenery. Wind makes this short course play longer. Played this course many times over recent years. Employees usually very kind. Pro shop employee (Tucson AZ) could use some customer service coaching.
Unbelievably bad course condition for what we thought was the best of OBX.
Could write a 5 page review but I really don’t feel like forming sentences to describe the disappointment and horrid course conditions.
1. Tee boxes on every hole were unrecognizable or in very bad shape.
2. Fairways had dried out or burnt areas throughout pretty much every hole. Drove the ball a few times right down the middle only to find a 15 yard patch of unplayable fairway.
3. Greens were recently aired out and were incredibly hard to navigate. (Was not informed at any point that the greens had been aired out recently)
4. Fringes and aprons to every hole were beyond unplayable, making it very difficult on a windy course to roll anything up onto greens.
5. Fairway on hole 3 had palates of sod everywhere and 8-10 employees actively laying sod while people were trying to play the hole. Sprinklers were also running on the first few holes on front side while we were trying to play. Hole 1 had freshly laid sod in several spots as well as extremely soggy and water saturated fairway thru entire hole.
I’ve played Currituck 3 times prior to this crap show but never saw it this poorly maintained. In all fairness we were warned that they had a “harsh winter” and that grounds crews were actively working throughout course. We were never informed that the greens had recently been aired out or the severity of how bad the course conditions actually were. Not sure how the golf shop crew could keep a straight face while describing the course conditions prior to play or how the grounds keeper could sleep at night knowing how bad of shape the course was in. Currituck is advertised as THE prestigious golf course of the entire OBX and greens fees are THE highest around by a lot. Next time offer an apology, a discount of some sort and don’t allow play until you get the course in playable condition. Very disappointing for a couple of annual vacationers looking to play what we thought was a pretty solid course.
Unfortunate to see the decline of a once great course.
Upon pulling into the the parking lot we were confused as to why there was no traffic on a usually busy course. Well, upon making the turn it became abundantly clear. I’m not sure what source of the deplorable conditions on he front 9 but it seems that the once reputable club is on the decline. The sod that they tried to repair fairways with was shoddy work to say the least. All of this from a course who has $130 greens fees. The greens however were consistent and rolled true. I really hope they can right the ship, but it will be years of hard work before they can get to where they were. Unfortunate to say the least.
Don’t play here anytime soon
I understand winter damage, but calling them fairways is extremely generous right now. Stripe it right down the middle and you’ll end up in a dead patch, with no relief for 30 yards in any direction. We payed $85/person, and they had run out of carts when we showed up (how does that even happen) and were bringing them straight from the last hole to the first. The range is one big dead patch too. Props to the greens keeper though for keeping them smooth and pretty pristine overall. That’s the only reason it’s 2 stars and not 1. There was also no water in any of the coolers on course, and we never saw a cart person once. I don’t know what this place is doing, but it appears to be a straight money grab. I would not recommend playing here, you can do much better things with $85
Course Condition
Unfortunately, Currituck Club is not in very good conditions this year. It looks like they had a brutal winter.
You can tell this is a nice club, however, the superintendent has let its condition spiral out of control. The only places that didn’t have dead patches were the greens. Tee boxes and fairways were poorly maintained. My guess is something happened during maintenance because the overall ambiance of the course and layout is great. Really an unfortunate occurrence. Do NOT pay more than a hot deal to play here. Gonna take some time to get it back.
Once a summer player from NJ
I come here every summer when we come down for a week from NJ. I love the layout, the lengths, the separation of holes, and typically the grounds. However, this summer the tee boxes and fairways were fried. It looked like there was possibly a disease issue going on. Greens were good but the amount of dead grass took away from the look and tee box distances. Hopefully they can remedy it sooner than later... at least by next summer!
May 17th Outing
I have played the Currituck Club many times and have always found it to be in excellent condition. Not the case this time around. Clearly the winter or something else did a job on the course. Virtually every hole and the driving range have dead grass/bare spots all over the place. Something you would expect to see at a public course middle of August after two months of no rain and not at a semi-private resort course. Surprised they are still charging full price. Played the day before at Kilmarlic and that course was in very good shape for half the price. Strongly suggest that you avoid until the fairways come back. Might be worth playing if the greens fees matched the condition of the course.
Very nice layout but....
My brother and I hadn't played the Currituck Club is a year or two. With a friend visiting from Canada, we took advantage of my GolfNow coupon. The course layout is one of the best but this season the fairways and many approach areas suffer from fungus or root rot, however, greens are good.
Fairways suffered from a real bad winter.
Love the layout, have played many times. But, this was the worst conditions I’ve encountered. Many fairways were brown and not growing. Greens were fair, slow but consistent and predictable. Really nice layout. Greens fees should be further reduced all things considers
Course was in rough shape from the winter. Will definitely come back in future years - but they need to let course recover.
