The best golf resorts in Phoenix, Arizona

Phoenix and the West Valley might get overshadowed by Scottsdale, but there's still plenty of choices for golfers to stay and play.

Phoenix doesn't have the glamorous golf reputation of Scottsdale.

That shouldn't deter you from giving its best golf resorts a look for your next Arizona getaway. Phoenix, and the West Valley, boasts its own impressive collection of high-end properties, just not as many of them as Scottsdale's collection of golf resorts. One of them is the valley's oldest golf resort, a place where four U.S. Presidents have teed it up, and another the largest golf resort in the state, featuring three courses. Luxury hotel brands like Waldorf Astoria, JW Marriott and Hilton lead the way.

Here's a look:

  1. Arizona Biltmore, a Waldorf Astoria Resort, Phoenix
View of the 14th hole from the Links at Arizona Biltmore Golf Club

The Arizona Biltmore is the Valley of the Sun's most historic resort, having hosted dignitaries and U.S. Presidents since 1929. Celebrating its 90th anniversary in 2019, the resort is an oasis of 29 acres of gardens, five outdoor pools, five restaurants and classic architecture (did you know it has a connection to Frank Lloyd Wright?). The older Adobe course and younger Links course complement one another well.

  2. JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa, Phoenix
JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa: An oasis in the Arizona desert.

This AAA Four-Diamond property has it all - two courses at the Wildfire Golf Club, the Revive Spa, five pools, a lazy river and restaurants with Asian and American dishes and steak as their focus. When it comes to Golf Advisor reviews, the Nick Faldo course (4.5 stars) edges out the Arnold Palmer course (4.4), but not so much that you must favor one over the other.

  3. Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Resort, Phoenix

Another all-suites property, this 584-suite Hilton caters to all ages, from the 138-foot waterslide and two pools for children to the Tocalmoa Phoenix Spa and Salon and golf packages to the Lookout Mountain Golf Club for adults. The entire resort is surrounded by nature set in the granite bluffs of the Phoenix North Mountain Preserve. The Different Pointe of View & Terrace Room Lounge delivers a AAA Four-Diamond dining experience. Golf Advisor users rave about the scenery on the back nine at Lookout Mountain (4.4 star rating).

  4. Wigwam Resort, Litchfield Park
View from the hotel front entrance at Wigwam Resort

The Wigwam doesn't have a Phoenix address, but it is located on the opposite side of Phoenix than Scottsdale, so it gets included here.

Everything at the Wigwam seems to come in threes: restaurants, golf courses, outdoor pools and 331 rooms with a fridge and private patios. Robert Trent Jones Sr.'s Gold course is the best of the trio, with the Blue course playing to 6,000 yards and the Red course no slouch, either, at 6,852 yards, featuring four of the toughest finishing holes in the valley. A 2015 renovation by Tom Lehman eliminated more than 30 bunkers on the Gold to make it more enjoyable.

  5. The Legacy Golf Resort, Phoenix
The Legacy Golf Resort, a Gary Panks design in Phoenix, held the 2000 Standard Register PING on the LPGA Tour.

The draw of the Legacy Golf Resort is its all-suites accommodations (328 of them), providing guests the space and comfort for a nice stay. An outdoor pool with two hot tubs, a fitness center, a restaurant and tennis, volleyball, shuffleboard and pickleball courts give it a community vibe with resort amenities. The par-71 Legacy Golf Club, designed by Gary Panks, provides nice long-range views of South Mountain, Camelback Mountain and even the Phoenix skyline. A Golf Channel Academy can remove the rust from your game.
