Coure in great shap

I had never played at this course until this outing. I was just about the only one on the course on this day so I played by myself. The greens were in great shape and rolled true. Everything seemed to be well maintained. It was a challenge on some holes that I was not expecting. I will be playing this course again and I recommend this course for any range of player.

Old School Traditional Layout

Played the first time. Not a "grip it and rip it" course. If you like to have to think your way around, it's a good fit. Greens are small/avg size. Very subtle breaks. Rolling true with not too much speed. Lots of contour in the fairways. Interesting design...if you like old Sandhills courses, you'll enjoy this one.

A good spot for a non crowded practice round

The overall course conditions were less than I expected. The greens were large and fast and were a true test for your short game

Ellis Maples at His Best

If, like me, you remember playing the traditional "old course" designs which use the lay of the land to it's best advantage along with tees only steps from greens, then the Country Club of Johnston County is a track you will certainly enjoy.
Located between Smithfield and Four Oaks on US 301, it is only an hour's drive from Raleigh and well worth the trip.
Once a privately held club, the course and club house bring back memories of the 1940s through the 1960s where the elite of Johnston County gathered and to some extent still do today.
I play this course 5 or 6 times per year and always have a 'good' round regardless of how I score. The course is well kept by the greens crew from tees through the greens, Playing in January the fairways are dormant and brown but the ball sets up well. The greens hold the flighted ball and the putts are true, rolling about 8 on the stempmeter the day I played. The course on this day was not busy, which is unusual for a Wednesday as the members still have their mid-week matches in the mornings, I followed the final member's group out alone after allowing them a couple of holes to get ahead and I completed my round, playing two balls, in three hours and fifteen minutes.
I am seriously considering taking my aluminum shaft Wilson Staffs and walking this course "down memory lane".
Make the drive, you will love every aspect of golf as Sam, Ben and Byron played the game as you play this course.

Was pleasantly surprised with this course. It was above my expectations.

This was a great location to stop and play a quick round of golf on our way to Myrtle Beach. Right off the hwy for easy access and back on the road.

Almost had the course all to ourself

We played on a Monday with tee time at 9:30 am. The very friendly staff when we arrived at 8:30 said grab a cart no key required and head out whenever your ready as we looked at only three cars in the parking lot. They said it was a Monday so they were not busy. My wife and I played 36 holes that day in about 7 hours with a lunch break. A bit of a short course but very wooded with some up and down. Some elevated tee boxes make a good drive look very long. The greens rolled very well and weather was great this time of year Oct. We were told that this was a private only club about 2 years earlier and had gone semi private. We had a short trip and could not stay longer or we would have come back everyday to play this fun track.
