Southern Pines Golf Club
About
Southern Pines Golf Club boasts a Donald Ross design that is considered one of the best courses in North Carolina. The diverse layout will please traditionalists while also rewarding creative shot-makers. Originally opened in 1906 as a nine-hole course, it was later expanded to a full 18 holes in 1910. At 6,300 yards, the golf course is short by today's standards, but it will definitely test all of your shot-making skills. The course requires everything from bump-and-runs to tricky tee shots that favor accuracy over distance. There are a variety of ways to play each hole, making strategy a key element to doing well. The rugged and beautiful terrain provided by the North Carolina Sandhills is the perfect setting for golf. Not only are the surroundings lush and scenic, the rolling landscape offers a bevy of natural hazards.

Great value Donald Ross course
This is an under valued Donald Ross course. Well designed. In very good condition. All handicap levels will like this course.
The infrastructure is somewhat tired. It needs a bit of TLC and it would sparkle.
We played in 3.5 hours and loved the course.
Needs some attention
With all the hype about how great this course is,I was a little disappointed.I remember it from years ago when it was in better shape. We played a couple of days after a rain storm and there was a lot of washed out areas including cart paths. Traps were unraked if not half full of water. Both halfway houses were closed, permently so it seems.Greens were slooow. Got a deal with Golfnow or I wouldn't have played there for the rack rate.
Very pleasant afternoon of golf
This was a great layout and a very good afternoon of golf. We enjoyed the challenge of the course. The staff was very friendly and we would go back there to play again soon!
Nice design. Rough edges
Played in July 2015. 95 and humid. 11:00 am tee time. Practically had the course to ourselves. Older facilities but the course was built in 1906 by Donald Ross so it's been around awhile! Course design is beautiful but crabgrass and weeds around edges needed taken care of. Guys were mowing and maintaining but lots of weeds along edges and crabgrass on tee boxes and around fringes of greens. Greens had been aerated so didn't get true rolls. $35 golfnow rate would be the most I'd pay for this course. $60 and $70 rates are way too much for this course. Overall good experience. Greens are framed pleasing to the eye. Myrtle trees were in full bloom...pink and purple. Made the course attractive.
Hidden Gem
I have played almost every course in the Southern Pines/Pinehurst area over the past 15 years and this one is an A list must play track. Greens are the best in the area right now and overall course conditions are better than all other area courses with the exception of #2, Mid-Pines and Pine Needles. Undulating greens, many elevation changes and sloped fairways will challenge all levels of golfer. If you can get a deal on GN for $50, jump on it and you will not be disappointed.
Slow round
The course was in very good condition considering that it was 100 degrees. Very slow foursomes had course backed up.
Decent, Not Worth Rack Rate
Friendly staff, fun layout and good greens. The rest of the experience was mediocre at best. Tee boxes not mown in quite a few days. Fairways and rough very patchy.
I know you pay a premium in Pinehurst, but just expected better playing conditions considering the cost. Played in the afternoon at Whispering Pines and the conditions were excellent at half the price.
Probably will play again if price is right!!!
Donald Ross classic design and greens were rolling great!
Staff was top notch! Thank you again for getting us out early!
Challenging but fair course
Staff went beyond expectations. Greens very challenging and fairways only a little thin after a harsh winter in North Carolina. Glad we chose this course to play as both guys and gals were pleased with the course layout. Hope to return in the near future.
Great Condition
In a time when nearly all courses throughout the state are suffering from winter kill, this course has amazing greens and fairways.
Everything from tee to green is in great shape and a layout that is a good test of golf from the Black Tees.
Doug in the ProShop was a pleasure to talk with while setting up our group and his staff made our day great.
I would highly suggest that you visit and play this wonderful course and I can assure you that our group will return in the fall to play again.
Thanks for a great time.
Very nice course
Overall condition was very good. Greens were in good shape and quick. Fairways were very good as well. Like the layout and shape of the golf holes. I'd give the course an 8 on a 10 scale and would recommend anyone play it. Only negative was the price to play. $70 is a little steep for what you get.
Great Course
The clubhouse isn't much but the guy working there was great to me. The facilities are great. Range is good enough and the putting green and chipping green are very good and similar to the course. The course actually had fairways and rough around the greens!!!!!!!! The greens are large and have tiers and tons of movement in them. Its a short course like most NC courses but if you play it from the back tees it will be fun. The flags tell you where the hole is located. Everyone of the par 3s are great and there are 2 easily drivable par 4s and 3 others that could be drivable with wind and a dry week but an errant tee shot would make the hole rough. Greens are in great shape, fast and extremely smooth. I played memorial day week and there were tons of older players out there. Pace of play was pretty slow because 3 of the short par 4s and two par 3s are all bunched together but i played alone so i couldn't complain. I enjoyed the course. They even cut weeds and bushes from around some of the pine trees. If they had cart paths, my guess is that this course would be 5 star but since there is no real quite of where to drive people kill the grass. Very fun course. If you're under a 12 Handicap it needs to be played from the back. I paid $40 at 2pm on a tuesday and that price is worth it.
Fun course
Facilities a little dated, but the course is a great design in good shape. Classic old style golf course.
A real Treasure!
A great layout in fantastic shape, and well worth the $. The only drawback were the clouds of pine pollen, and the pace of play, but since we were behind a couple of 4somes, we couldn't complain, since it was a beautiful day to play. We will be back!
Great golf course
I've played here twice. There are a lot of beautiful courses here in NC. This is one of my favorites. Challenging but fair.
Rough Around the Edges
I played this course in March and therefore didn't expect pristine conditions. However, there were many parts of the course that really could use some upgrading, including the cart paths. The greens had been punched recently and had a little impact on the putts but they were still fairly quick. I'm sure there are many better courses in the Pinehurst area.
Excellent Course!
Cool day and few golfers , but course was a great play. Will be back to play. If you can find a good price, a must play course.
Nice course, not much trouble.
Considering the weather here for the past two weeks (Snow and Ice storms) the course was in remarkable condition. Unfortunately the greens had been punched and top dressed. They were still ok and rolled pretty true. Greens are large and undulating.
The staff were great and even got us out early before our scheduled time. Pace of play was excellent. Got a great rate on Golfnow.
Will play again for sure when I'm in the area.
the boot of ross
Great course, very tuff walk. A Donald Ross classic that has kept its look and feel over time. A must play if your in the area.
Well-maintained, good value, fast greens
I enjoy the course though it has been over a year since I played. Staff are friendly, regulars on the course gladly waved me through. Greens and traps very well maintained. Teed off around 10:15 AM and finished before 1PM, so I played another 18. Only drawback was encountering a five-some that held up play for the last 5 holes. Greens are really fast.
I am sorry for your playing experience. We only have one halfway house(not two), which is open, however the lady who normally operates it was out for surgery that day, but we have filled the vacancy, it is back open.
As for the washed out areas, we had received over 4 inches of rain the night before, it wasn't something that could be fixed for the very next day.
The greens are now healed, from the late June aerification. I invite you to contact me so that you may experience us on a better day, as opposed to our worst.
