Southern Pines Golf Club
About
Southern Pines Golf Club boasts a Donald Ross design that is considered one of the best courses in North Carolina. The diverse layout will please traditionalists while also rewarding creative shot-makers. Originally opened in 1906 as a nine-hole course, it was later expanded to a full 18 holes in 1910. At 6,300 yards, the golf course is short by today's standards, but it will definitely test all of your shot-making skills. The course requires everything from bump-and-runs to tricky tee shots that favor accuracy over distance. There are a variety of ways to play each hole, making strategy a key element to doing well. The rugged and beautiful terrain provided by the North Carolina Sandhills is the perfect setting for golf. Not only are the surroundings lush and scenic, the rolling landscape offers a bevy of natural hazards.

Great Value to be had
Pros - Very friendly staff, good food at fair prices, great greens, challenging greens, room to spray the ball off the tee, plays much longer than the scorecard yardage, walkable but hilly
Cons - regular price could be a bit too much for the course conditions
Nice golf course
Course is very nice, fair and challenging. Greens are very fast.
Really a picture of a course.
The course design by Ross was really outstanding. an old time design with challenging holes. enjoyed it very much - greens were in excellent shape considering the time of year. Will come back soon.
We will play this one again
Whay a beautiful course. Donald Ross at his finest!
Great Day for Golf
Played this course on Sunday, was paired up with a Dad and Son from Buffalo. The son was 13 and a pretty good golfer for that age. They were awesome to play with and we had a great time. The course was in excellent shape. Fairways were over seeded and grass was just a little high, but not bad. I am sure they will get mowed pretty soon. The greens were perfect. Keep it below the hole! The course was not very long but still a good test of golf. Allot of fun and i would recommend to anybody. Typical Donald Ross with elevated greens, so add that extra 10 yards!
Over seeded course with great greens
Tees, fairways and greens were in great condition. Fun course to play with good layout.
Thank you Mr. Ross
A really fun round of golf on a Ross gem. The course is a little "tired". Greens are plenty quick, if showing their wear from the summer season. Fairways are good, but also well used. Tee boxes are good, but dry. But, the bottom line is that this is a wonderful Donald Ross layout, and you just don't get at one of those often. Great approach shots, both up and down, to some small yet dramatic greens. Good bunkering. A nice mix of length. Just a real fun day of golf!
Super Experience
The staff was great, the course was ok but didn't know that they air the greens. Which made the putting differcult, I was paired up with another single who walked but we finish in 3 hours. Everbody go and play Souther Pines and enjoy a great round on an old course

The course is great. Will return again in the fall.
ctollie,
Thank you for your feedback. All feedback is appreciated. If you played in late August, might I suggest late October to early November for your Fall round. The greens really speed up then, and it plays like a completely different course.

SLOW
Course was in good shape greens were great but the pace of play ruined the experience took almost 3 hours to play last 6 holes had up to 20 minute waits between shots the course was almost empty except for the 3 groups in front of us a fivesome and two forsomes it was miserable. Not really worth the $80 price tag if you can get a hot deal on golf now it isn't so bad
Nandedad,
Thank you for the feed back. All feedback is appreciated. On behalf of Southern Pines Golf Club, I apologize for the late response, and the slow play you experienced. I am trying to get the hang of the administrative task related to GolfNow. I have just started documenting and following up on our course reviews this week.
Our Course is nicely healed from the August aerification, and I would like to invite you back to experience our golf course again. Please call our course and ask for me.

A nice chance to play a Ross design
Overall, this was an enjoyable course to play and I would recommend it to Ross fans, but I was not as wowed as some of the other reviewers. I did like the layout of the course, and inside 50 yards had the signature Ross characteristics, which was fun. The course was in average condition. They punched the greens a couple weeks before and they were slow, so I wish they would have had more speed (there was no aerification alert on GolfNow). I think fast, smooth greens would make this course a pretty cool test.
The rate on GolfNow was $80, and I found a $60 hot deal, so I thought I got a good deal. But, I found out at the course that if you call the pro shop right now, it is $45 after 11. I did call GolfNow back and the (second) person I talked to did credit back that $15, which was good. I do not think it is an $80 course. I would probably pay $60 one time to play the course and get a Ross experience, but after that I think $45 is the right price given the current condition.
jlambert79,
Thank you for your review. All feedback is appreciated.
If you are looking for the true characteristics of Donald Ross at Southern Pines, then late October to early November are the best times to play. The greens are very fast then, and course conditions will be at a premium.

A good test
Great staff and beautiful greens that exemplified the Donald Ross style of demanding good iron shots into very sloped greens. Not too long but very challenging.
Old School
It's interesting to come across an Elks Club with a Donald Ross course. As expected, the course layout is excellent, and the playing areas are in good condition. The staff is very welcoming and hospitable. Cart paths and some areas need repair but nothing an infusion of cash can't fix. A reasonable value at $88 but not worth more than that.
Decent experience.
Course was in decent shape. Greens slow. Playing area in good condition.
Donald Ross at his best
Another great Donald Ross course ... takes you back to yesteryear.
Short in today's standards ... but still very challenging.
A must play when you are in the Sandhills.
Clubhouse could be freshened up a bit.
Donald Ross Genius
If you are a low handicapper, find the black tees where possible to increase the challenge. The front nine is a tough challenge, while the back will entertain you with many different types of par 4 holes. Take the time to enjoy the design elements of each hole. It is a spectacular layout.
A Classic Donald Ross layout.
This is the perfect course no matter how good your game is. It is challenging for all handicaps. Course is in good shape and the greens are in good shape. Some real picturesque holes.
Course was well worth the price.
This is the best overall condition I have ever seen the course....greens were fantastic (just a little slow), fairways and rough also were in good condition. New carts with gps a real plus.
Hidden Gem
Classic D. Ross design. Small greens, lots of undulation. Lots of elevation changes throughout the course. Just a fun, fair golf course. Some of the holes have spectacular views around the lakes. Well worth the drive from Raleigh on a GN deal. Greens had been aerated recently. Probably be perfect by late March.
dnagy,
Thank you for your feedback. All feedback is appreciated. On behalf of Southern PInes Golf Club, let me apologize for the lack of notification about aerifying the greens. We ran into a technical difficulty with GolfNow about the notification. Our greens are now nicely healed. I would like to invite you back to try them again.
Please call the proshop and ask for Brandon.
