About
The Rees Jones course at Sea Trail Plantation is one of three courses on the property, which covers 2,000 acres of creeks and wooded lots.
It's in Sunset Beach, N.C., once named the top coastal destination in the U.S. by Money magazine, and in 2003, Golf Week named Sea Trail in America's best residential courses of distinction.
All three courses, by Dan Maples, Rees Jones and Willard Byrd got 4-star ratings from Golf Digest.
The Jones course opened in 1990 and has wide, rolling fairways and mounds and many of the elevated greens are surrounded by water. Water comes into play on 11 of the 18 holes, but those aren't the only hazards. You'll also have to deal with pot and large expanse bunkers. The course stretches to 6,761 from the tips and has a moderately difficult slope rating of 135 from the back tees. The Jones course has four sets of tees, down to 4,912 from the most forward tees.

Greens and fairways in good condition. Overall the course was in above average condition.
Could be a great course
I am a 9 Handicap
I am 65
I play around 5 days a week.
Layout is very good.
Greens are fast and fairly true.
Bunkers are exceptional.
Tee boxes are a combination of Bermuda rough and sand.
Rough is knarly 2 inch Bermuda where your ball falls down, so as to be hard to find and hard to advance.
Fairway is the rough grass, but shorter.
The greens are the fairway grass, but shorter.
Probably the time of year, but many fairways were brown (time to overseed?)
Seems like courses want to raise prices cuz of Covid, but don't want to put the money back in the course.
Put money into this place, and it could be a non-inflated 4.5!

Pandemic Play Pleasure
This course was a pleasure to play. We got a tee time at 2 pm. The weather was perfect and no one. was behind us. The course is well-kept and enough of a challenge for intermediate players with rolling hills to keep your ball from going too far off course. The only reason I took off a point is that the driving range ball machine was broken and there was no staff to distribute range balls so that we could warm up.

Good play for the price
$42 with golf now discount so was happy for the price. The fairways and greens were in great shape but the traps hadn’t been raked in a long time and need sand added.

Very mediocre experience.
Greens had been aerated within past couple of weeks. They were bumpy, slow and inconsistent from one green to the next. Tee boxes needed mowed. Bunkers were in need of edging. Carts had coolers but we had to ask for ice. They had NO cups or bottles of water. Luckily I brought a cup and a couple of bottles of water. No towels in cart. No tees in cart. No on course beverage service. Went to snack bar at turn and they only had hot dogs, no other sandwiches even though there was a menu listing various other choices. Very lacking in amenities based on a resort type course. Funniest thing of the day was the cart attendant telling us that the course was in great condition.

Sea Trail Rees Jones Course in August
An okay experience. Played at just before 8am on a Wednesday. Starters were unfriendly. No beverage cart service on a hot day and no mention of this by either the starters or the check-in staff in the golf shop. Was playing as a single, matched up with another golfer which was fine and expected -- went off of #10. Pace was okay but not great - waiting on every tee and approach shot, not unexpected when playing as a twosome. Layout was good -- challenging at times. Course conditions were okay but greens were rather slow and a couple of course features just felt a bit unattended to (bunkers, tees and rough). Overall an average round of golf.

Ground Keepers need a refresher course on details
The biggest issue I had was the mowers. They mowed with a very close cut that left heavy globs of grass on the fairway and greens.
This course was recommended as a primer course, Just not up to the billing

Rates to high for conditions
Good layout and friendly staff but I wouldn’t pay more than $40-45 for the current conditions. Tees quite rough. Greens either burned or fungus.

Could be friendlier
Fun course and was in great shape. The greens are a little thin but typical to most beach courses I’ve played. Could definitely step up the “friendly” customer service from the bag drop to the pro shop check in. Best service I received was from the bartender.

Great Course
Love playing all 3 courses at Sea Trail, and have for nearly 30 years. Had a great day on the course. Conditions were very good, and pace (for a beach course) was great (4:12) for us. The only negative was that the staff seemed a little bit annoyed that they were so busy that they were doubling-teeing that day. They didn’t seem the least bit interested in engaging in conversation with the players. Overall, great place to play golf!

Great Course for the Money.
Greens were in good shape. Course was challenging but fair and in good shape. Saw numerous baby alligators. I will definitely be playing here again.
