Jones at Sea Trail Golf Resort and Convention Center
About
The Rees Jones course at Sea Trail Plantation is one of three courses on the property, which covers 2,000 acres of creeks and wooded lots.
It's in Sunset Beach, N.C., once named the top coastal destination in the U.S. by Money magazine, and in 2003, Golf Week named Sea Trail in America's best residential courses of distinction.
All three courses, by Dan Maples, Rees Jones and Willard Byrd got 4-star ratings from Golf Digest.
The Jones course opened in 1990 and has wide, rolling fairways and mounds and many of the elevated greens are surrounded by water. Water comes into play on 11 of the 18 holes, but those aren't the only hazards. You'll also have to deal with pot and large expanse bunkers. The course stretches to 6,761 from the tips and has a moderately difficult slope rating of 135 from the back tees. The Jones course has four sets of tees, down to 4,912 from the most forward tees.

Layout fine, Greens suck.
I brought a group of 28 men down to Myrtle Beach for my annual golf outing, and this course was recommended by the golf director that set this up. (I'm going to have a talk with him about this, too) First off, the people that worked there were awesome, very friendly. The layout was fair, but challenging. The greens (?) were atrocious. Some were green painted mud and they had 2 temporary greens that we had to use. For an established course like this, it's unacceptable. I won't be bringing my gang back until I know for a fact that they have regained their greens. I hate putting on mud...
Thank you for your review pertaining to your stay with us at Sea Trail. We value our guests' thoughts and feedback, which gives us an opportunity to address your concerns with the goal of delivering a first-class experience.
In reference to playing conditions on the Byrd course, numerous golf properties in the Carolinas have faced challenges due to the unseasonably cold temperatures that have plagued our region since the start of the year. It has been labeled it as a “winter kill” in North and South Carolina and we continue to work hard in getting our courses in pristine condition. Our head groundskeeper and his talented crew members are working hard to keep all three of our premier courses in top shape. With better weather now in the area, we are optimistic our playing conditions will improve as the season progresses.
We appreciate your comments and look forward to having you back playing our courses in the near future.
Great Layout Bad Conditions
The course layout was very nice. The conditions were not very good. Many of the the tee boxes were thin. The fairways were good, but several were tall so it was like hitting out of the rough. The greens on the front nine were ok. Several thin spots so it made putting difficult to read and gauge speed. The back nine was terrible. Most of the greens on the back nine were dirt painted green. It was like putting on rolled dirt. Would not play here until the greens are in better shape.

We played last Friday, April 6. The greens were mud and they had 2 temporary greens. Sorry, but that's what they've got. Good Luck.
We are playing it on Friday of next week, April 6. Fingers crossed here as well.
When are you playing this course? Our group is not paying this course until the end of April. We are hoping the conditions will be better by then. Fingers crossed.
Boy I hope you are exaggerating! I've got 28 men from 4 states that are playing this course as the opening course on our annual Myrtle Beach golf trip. I hope the management of the course is reading this!!!
Jones Course
Played here on our way to Myrtle as a warmup course. Paid $59 and the guy in the pro shop told us it included their “amazing “ lunch buffet prior to our tee time. You get one trip to the buffet, that day they had a salad/cold bar and a hot bar that had mashed potatoes and rubbery chicken and a pork chop that rivaled shoe leather.
The bag drop guy informed us we had to walk and carry our bags to the range (approximately 175 yards) the range was average nothing spectacular.
The course is an ok layout but the greens were not receptive, and areas of them were dead. They appeared to be healthy, but they have been painted green. Pace of play was mediocre at best.
Our group has decided not to return to play at Sea Trail.
Really enjoyed this course
The first few greens were lightningbfast, butvthe rest were closer to “normal”. Overall everything was in great shape. Great value. A MUST if you are in the area.
Over priced and over booked!
Played this course because we looked at the reviews. With all the courses on the area the price was on the high side for what you get. It is a older course that when we got there looked to have a lot of regular players, the pace of play was horrible, they sent us out as a foursome stacked right on top of two other foursomes . No gap and seeing as players don’t know how to play ready Golf it made it very slow . If we Had not paid so much we would have quit as it was we just finished before the sun going down. Would not return, too many other nice courses to pick from.
Super deal!
My wife and I played the course for the first time but were familiar with the Byrd course. We enjoyed the layout very much. It does have some forced carries but they were not overly hard (white tees). The design presents variety, reasonably generous fairways and well maintained bunkers. Best of all is the deal offered with the round as it includes meals and beverages! Pretty hard to beat and we will be back.
Good layout, multiple tees so playable for any handicap
Good layout, smooth greens, very friendly staff. One slow group ruined a perfect golf day. Three hours to play last nine.
Great course at a good price
The course was in great shape even after the rain. It was cart path only on 4 holes but that didn't affect pace of play. We were able to finish 18 holes in just over 4 hours. We even made it to the clubhouse for a drink before they closed after teeing ioff at 12:30.
Great value, but...
Got a great deal which included breakfast and lunch buffet vouchers and a beer - all good, but they were clearly overbooked and there was massive confusion getting everybody out easily. All turned out well, but it was surprisingly inefficient to start.
Pleasantly surprised
Nice mix of holes with plenty of nature and views. Friendly service. I would recommend to anyone looking for a challenge at a fair price.
Awesome course
The layout was awesome and it is a pretty challenging course.
Not what I expected
The pro shop told me this was the best of the sea trail courses which means I will not be playing the others. The course was in bad shape and the greens were extremely slow and bumpy. There are too many great courses in the area to waste time and money here.
Good day at Sea Trails-Jones Course
Had a good experience at the course today. Course was in really good condition. The greens were a bit on the fuzzy side but still rolled true. I do not like playing neighborhood golf, but over half the holes, the houses do not come into play, but the holes where they do, it is a little on the tighter side. First time playing so I am impressed with the layout and conditions. Had a back up on 5, but spoke to a member and he told me where to go and was able to play 18 under 3 hours as a single, 50 mins. to play the back. I would recommend this course if visiting Sunset Beach, as it is the closest course to the Beach. I played on a hot afternoon about 2:00pm and was able to enjoy the round, although had to skip around a bit. I was stuck behind 3 4-somes on #5 and decided to skip to the back, where I was by myself. I would suggest playing later in the day to avoid any delays. Overall good challenge and good conditions. Very windy and that took some creative thinking on shot making. Play this course if you are in the area, you will not be disappointed.
Myrtle Beach Getaway
Course appeared to be having financial problems. Could not get a golf cart to use for going to the practice green or driving range. Golf carts were assigned at your appointed tee time, not before. Restaurant food and service was not up to the level I would have suspected for a golf course with the class of golf facilities they have.
Thank you for your comments and 3-star rating. We are and have been making considerable improvements to our entire resort, including our three championship-level golf courses.
Our new fleet of golf carts arrived last week as well, so we hope you will be back in the near future to see them for yourself and play at Sea Trail!
Solid course
Good layout with slow greens that have multi grass types. Good variety of holes. Woman tee friendly wife enjoyed.
Thank you so much for your review and 4-star rating. We hope to see you back at Sea Trail soon!
it was ok; I guess
getting to the course, if you've never been there? street directions not very good, signs on streets needed. got to course still not very evident you're in right spot. gps doesn't know either. played very slow pace, can't get in rhythm. too much time, no ranger.
Thank you for your review and 3-star rating. We appreciate your business and look forward to having you back in the future.
Pace of Play ruined the experience
There was a group playing a scramble in front and played so slowly that I had to replay the front nine to be able to finish by dark. The staff would not let me play one of the other nine (there are two courses at the site), so I had to replay the same nine I had just played. The cart staff was very friendly but the pro shop staff was indifferent, very terse and not very friendly. Condition of the course was just fair. Fairways not well grown in and greens had many little sand bumps possibly made by ants or some other small burrowing animal. Average at best.
Thank you for your review and comments about your round of golf with us. I am sorry to hear you ran into some issues and hope you will return at a future date to play one of our three courses.
