Stay away
Played this course during a week long buddies trip. We played 13 rounds and Sea Trail Maples was the most disappointing of our trip...In fact the most disappointing of all our trips down here. The course condition from bald tee boxes and fairways (especially the front 9) and waste bunkers that had not had attention in months made it not worth it at all. In the spirit of true disclosure the Byrd and Jones course at Sea Trail were both very nice.
Great course for the price
Beautiful well maintained and challenging coutse. Excellent greens and fairways. Great views lots of water with some tricky risk reward holes. The very nice Maples Bar and gril bar attached to the clubhousewas dissapointingly closed. Some of tee boxes need some work but all said great value great coutse.
Hey "mmercaldi" thank you so much for the positive review! We appreciate the kind words about the course. You will have to come see us again soon!
My Favorite at Sea Trail
The review title says it all. Have played all three Sea Trail courses several times. IMHO Jones is overrated. Byrd is nice, but Maples is the most interesting. When I played in late April the fairways were coming along fine with mostly good lies. The greens, however, were pretty sketchy. Lots of fungus and foreign grasses. I heard that they are replacing them with a dwarf Bermuda this summer. The replacement can't come too soon. This will then be a really fun course and a great value for the price. Until then, I would say it's a little overpriced given the extremely poor putting surfaces. BTW, the starter was one of the best and most accommodating I've seen in a long time. A really good ambassador for the course.
Hey "u000004827657" we appreciate you taking the time to leave your feedback. We appreciate the kind words about our staff and hope to see you again soon!
Not As Bad As The Recent Reviews
I was a little hesitant about playing here after reading the recent reviews, but I started on the back nine and some of the tee boxes were a little thin, but the fairways and the greens were in pretty good shape. They were much better than another area course that I had played earlier in the week. Let's face it we're not paying for and playing TPC courses. Some of the greens had some bare or sandy spots, but pin placements helped eliminate them and hopefully they will come back within a few weeks.
The front nine was a little disappointing. The first hole is reduced to a par 3 due to work in the fairway. And the tee boxes and cart paths were in need of repair. I can see that if I had started on the front nine I would have been very disappointed in the course all together, but having played the back nine first I had already discounted the bad reviews.
Since Sea Trail is home to three 18 hole courses my recommendation for this course would be to use the Maples course as a 9 hole course beginning in May or June thru September and make the improvements to the tee boxes and greens on the front nine and possibly open the course for October, and then overseed the entire course again for the winter and with limited play during that time of year the course may be back in good shape for next spring.
Hey "rmharz" thank you for taking the time to leave us a review and provide your feedback. You make some great points and suggestions. We are always looking to better our courses and hope you will come see us again soon!
Not Good
Greens were in rough shape & needed water. Tee boxes were hard as a rock, need water. Played the course twice, first & last.
Hey "HapTaylor" we apologize that you were not satisfied with the course conditions. We are always looking to improve the course any way that we can. We value your feedback and hope you will come out again soon!
Better greens in my salad
Half the greens had dead spots over the majority of the green complex. No value in these greens at any cost. A member of my group was told the course was having the greens redone in 3 months. The Jones course was in the same condition as Maples while the Byrd course greens were in good shape.
Hey "kromas213" we appreciate you taking the time to leave a review and provide your feedback. We are always working to improve and hope you will come see us again soon!
Sea trail
Course was in good shape. An older course which seemed short in comparison to other resort courses. Was fun to play and enjoyed the day. Some tee boxes and greens needed some work with this being a resort course.
Hi "razor0717" we appreciate your feedback and want to assure you that we are always working to improve!
Happy Sea Trails too You
It was a beautiful day and course for my wife and I to play. The layout was a little tricky with the traps and dóglegs, but it was great,
Hey "Ronlh" we are glad that you had a great time out on the course with your wife! We hope to see you again soon!
More Improvements Needed
Sea Trail courses were top shelf twenty years ago, but had fallen on hard times, and went thru bankruptcy a few years back. From what I can see they have made upgrades, but have a long way to go to bring back the old glory days.
Not one of Dan Maples best designs, but I have yet to play a Maples course that was not better than most design wise, of the other courses available in the area.
Being from the north I was looking forward to putting on Bent grass greens again. However about half of the greens were sparse and bumpy. I fear that they will be replacing the bent with one of the new varieties of bermuda, that have become so prevalent down here.
Drainage was a problem on the holes running parallel to the Calabash River and were CPO.
As a previous review stated the waste bunkers, were in really deplorable condition. It has not rained in a week, yet the waste bunkers were more water and mud than sand.
I was first out on a Saturday, and finished in 2:40, having never played the course before.
Staff was friendly and helpful.
Nature is all around you as wind your way the the course. There were two osprey in a tree along the first hole, and many more birds were seen and heard all day.
Hey "jmc1958" we appreciate you taking the time to leave your feedback! We are constantly working to improve so we can provide that ultimate golf experience for our players. We hope you will come back and see us again next time you are in the area!
Maples course needs work
I've played this course the last 2 years and was disappointed that they have not improved conditions since last year. The greens need attention as the grass seems very sparce and the tee boxes were completely bare on some holes. The sand traps were OK but the waste areas were starting to look like the Grand Canyon. Please take care of this course as it is well designed and very convenient to many golfers.
Good course but needs yardage markers
Enjoyed the course. However, would have liked to see more yardage markers. On many holes the 150 stake was the only marker I saw.
Hidden gem
Played on a cool day in Feb.Met one foursome and they let me through and finished in 3 hrs.The course was dry,all grass was green and was in good shape,All other MB courses I played in Feb were soggy and cart path only. This was in far better shape than 3 other courses I played.the greens were fast and rolled true, they were a bit on the small side but not tiny. The course had a good layout and staff was friendly.I hope the other Sea Trail courses are as nice.Great value.I would highly recommend.
Nice ,about, wet but decent conditions for february
I like maples designs and wet turf didn't affect that opinion
Good course.
Paths need resurfacing. Greens are fast!
Trap sand needs work...
Very wet fairways not cut
Very wet and fairways not cut, grass very high made fairway shots tuff! Went to get a hot chocolate at turn bartender was rude to say the least. Layout of course is nice. Hope to play again on dryer day.
Local golfer
Played here quite a few times in past. My favorite course at Sea Trail. I feel it has the most character of the 3. Greens were terrible in the past. Greens now were in real good shape. A big improvement. Played here two weekends in a row. Played in under 4 hours just after 12 noon.
A pleasant experience
The greens at the Sea Trail Maples course were outstanding. Perfect pace for scoring. The fairways were a bit shaggy, but given all the recent rain I suppose that should be expected. Some of the teeing areas were pretty beat up and could use some TLC. I was surprised that only some of the holes were cart path only - the course must drain better than some others in the region. The bag drop guy was a shining star, couldn't have been more helpful. Stopped in the restaurant at the turn for water, seemed like a nice place.
Awful condition!
Greens were like a minefield, fairways were scalped, tee boxes bare, staff surly (acted like they were doing you a favor letting you play there)...will not play there again! !
Just Okay
Tee boxes was uneven and cut up. The greens was awful bumpy, cut up, & grass trimmings left on greens. Fairways was ok and traps had tons if rocks and shells. Many other options at Myrtle Beach.
Hi "Duane7133" we apologize that you did not enjoy your time out on the Maples course. However, we are happy to hear that you did like the Bryd and Jones courses! We are always working to improve and hope you will come out next time you are in town.
