Santa Anita Golf Course

Santa Anita presents much more challenge than the scorecard would indicate, especially for a first-time player. The course is right in front of you, there are no hidden hazards or severe doglegs; The course is protected by the humps and bumps in the fairway and crowned green complexes. I struck the ball well off the tee and navigated the greens efficiently, but was a mess everywhere in between and have the score to prove it. The course demands precise iron play when approaching the green and a refined and creative short game to scramble if incoming shots are on line. I look forward to playing Santa Anita again and hope to bring a bag packed with all of the shots required to conquer this track.

Loved the wide fairways easy course for the driver. The greens were incredible lots of slope. Good combination of easy and difficult holes. Overall just fun to play

I've played this course since 1969. Because of its uneven lies and sometime difficult pin placements this course is a real challenge

I know it’s hard to believe that Santa Anita has greens that are running about 9-10 but today it’s true. Not the traditional waggling trail the ball leaves as it heads toward the hole but straight, and almost true. Not sure if the Super did a recent verticut but whatever was done I sure hope it is done more frequently, maybe once a month.

Now my biggest complaint are the conditions inside the sand traps. I have noticed that sand has been added to several traps, for sure the front right trap on hole 4. However they still have a few more critical traps to add more sand or better yet have maintenance drag the sand down from the high sides of the traps to the middle. I specifically can site hole 6.

Finally last week I thought the Superintendent had the maintenance crew OVER water the course and this week seems to be overwatered too. I did have 5 tee balls that had mud on the sides. So lift, clean and place should be the norm.

Beautiful course, great and friendly Staff, good greens fees. The one and only complaint I have is that the pace of play at times can be very slow. Getting behind a 5-some with push carts and umbrellas is the absolute worst. Especially when you catch up to them at a tee to find nobody in front of them and they are sitting down resting. Sheese!!! But that is really the one and only complaint I have.

The course has serious fairway and green issues. Its common to find absence of grass in the fairways probably due to poor maintenance.

At one time, this course had the best greens. Now the greens have dead patches of grass and invasions of foreign grass. Sand traps are notoriously bad as they often lack sand and for some reason are wet!

Overall course is pleasing to the eye and most of the holes reward good drives and shots.

The greens are extremely slow. The course could speed up the greens, because the practice green is a good speed.

This is my home course. I play it twice a week. My only complaint with the course is, that there are to many bald spots In the fairways and the sand traps need to be racked daily before play. other than that, the course is in great playing care.

I'm was shocked to witness the methodology of the new greenskeeper (as of Summer 2019) manage the large practice green next to the clubhouse. I've known many greenskeepers and their methods and can readily identify who really knows his stuff. When I asked the pro shop who this guy was and if he knows what he's doing they had high regard for him. REALLY?! Well fast forward to today (October 2019)... All the greens are messed up! I don't know what they pay this superintendent/greenskeeper but I'm so disappointed. Playing and practicing at Whittier Narrows and Brookside now.

This is my home course and I have enjoyed playing here for the last 20 years. If you play in the afternoon, the pace of play is around 4 hrs. or less. Morning rounds are slower. They have always done a good job maintaining the greens, fairways and bunkers given the lack of water sometimes and the hot summer weather. It's a fairly challenging golf course, traditional design and enjoyable. The staff have always been friendly. Good clean environment.

This has been my home course for almost 20 years. They always do their best to keep the greens and fairways in very good condition despite the weather and the lack of water sometimes. The improvements made by the new management in the clubhouse, bar, driving range and course are excellent and I like playing here. It is a clean, friendly and wholesome environment. Good food at the restaurant, the bar is a great place to hang out after the round, friendly staff make a big difference.

Santa Anita is one of my all time favorite courses. One, because it is where I learned to play 40 years ago, and 2, because it makes you hit every club in the bag. Yesterday, I was pressed for time and I had the choice of playing at my home course in Palmdale, where it was very windy, or leaving early and playing at my old love. Based on the tee time sheet, it looked like I would be able to get around Santa Anita in 3 hours. So I chose to go there. I was so sad to see the condition of the course. The last time I saw it this bad was when the county still managed it. Bare spots in the fairways, the greens were punched 12 days before, but were still horrible and the slowest greens I have ever putted on. I am very sad and hope that management can figure it out. Until then, next time I will play my home course and leave later for my appointments in Arcadia area.

Not worth playing in current conditions. Try back in Oct when greens are back to being playable

We were informed when we checked in that the course is renovating back 9 today, but we’ve prepaid for the Hot Deals for 18 holes and end up played 9 holes...

What a rip off!

Nobody mentioned anything when we booked at GolfNow, no warning, no nothing!

Finished our round in 4 hours , never was this fast at Santa Anita. Golf was in good condition

I only play when I am in town. I now live in Arizona, but grew up in Pasadena. As memory serves me, I'd say you were above average for a municipal course that gets a lot of play. Some bear spots, but that's to be expected, but by-in-large the course seemed to be in good shape.

I used to play this course all the time growing up and loved it, the renovations that have been made to the clubhouse and around the course are fantastic and I wanted to give this course a higher grade but the conditions were just not great. I don't mind if the rough is a bit dry or bare but the fairways were very dry and missing large patches of grass, same for around the greens. This course just needs a little water at the right time and it could be a great muni for the price. Hope it gets better.
