Carolina Shores Golf & Country Club

About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2024.
Carolina Shores Golf & Country Club is situated in Calabash, N.C. a scenic fishing village. The mature woodland landscape provides a secluded and relaxing setting that is ideal for a round of golf. Though it may be peaceful, you still have to be on your toes with plenty of water hazards and sand traps lurking throughout this traditional layout. Mature trees line the fairways, requiring even further accuracy. The golf course is known for its natural crater lakes, which make an appearance on several holes. It is a course that rewards strategy and skill over brute strength. The holes will make you think, but overall Carolina Shores is a forgiving golf course that is playable for all skill levels, especially with five sets of tees ranging from 6,085 yards to a lengthy 6,755 yards.

Wow
1st is awful, green looks temporary, other greens are spotty bare (no grass). Price is too high for condition of course.
Ready to close down
Not sure what exactly is going on with this course but it seems to be ready to close. Very unkempt greens were awful tees were very bad also probably the worst condition course I’ve ever seen in 30 plus years of golf
Horrible
Course was run down and not kept up. Tee boxes were riddled with ant hills and was bite on every drive. Sand traps had weeds growing out of them and if greens didn’t have a flag and hole in them, we wouldn’t have knew where they were. Only positive was the cart was clean and didn’t let us sit. The only person we seen on course was in pro shop and he was nice and helpful.
Carolina Shores in terrible condition
I have been playing golf for over 60 years and I have never played a course in as poor a condition as Carolina Shores. I paid only $30 and that was too much! If they sprayed the fairways and rough for weeds, they would only have dirt left. I estimate that The fairways and rough had not been mowed for at least a month and the tees and greens for at least 2 weeks. The bunkers were played as "ground under" because they had not received any care for months. There was a temporary green for the first hole and numerous mud areas, bare areas, and stretches of cart path that were impassable., The course is in such poor condition, that it will cost many hundreds of thousands of dollars to bring this course back to good condition. I wish that I had taken pictures of what I saw, so that I could post them. I will never play this course again.
Very poor course conditions
It’s a shame this course used to be beautiful and well taken care of. We would play this course multiple time a year when we can to the beach. Unfortunately it’s sounds like Covid really hurt them.
Different Than The Last Time
It's been 30+ years since I played here. Back then it ws a really fun experience and the course was in great condition. This time was different. Even with the torrential rains a few weeks ago, this course was such a dissapointmen. Greens were bare with 40% grass. Greens were the slowest ever because they had not been cut. Fairways full of weeds. We experienced the most mosquitoes ever. Clubhouse staff very friendly and amenable but restrooms below standards. I feel bad writing this review and I hope this course can recover to it's former wonderful days.
Horrible Condition but Incredible Staff
Thick and unkempt rough and fairways are a mix of burnt and uncut. Greens are seriously unplayable with sand covering the majority of them and the rest is grass longer than the fairways. I wish I didn’t have to write this review as the staff are some of the friendliest people I have ever met.
Not worth your time or money
This course should not be played. I was on vacation and booked 1 day in advance, as several others in my party did not want to play that day. It seemed like a good value and I was in Myrtle Beach, so I figured it couldn't be as bad as several of the reviews that I had read. Boy, was I wrong!! One review stated that the course was a "goat farm." He was being kind. Tee boxes and greens were the worst that I have ever seen on any course in my life. The majority of the greens were only 1/2 grass, the rest of each green was a complete disaster. The parts that did have grass were extremely long. I have played courses where the fairways were shorter than the greens at this location. Cart paths were bumpy, overgrown with grass, pine straw, etc. There were several places that you couldn't even see where the cart path was because of the condition. I nearly left after the 3rd hole, but did not want to give the owner the satisfaction of paying for 18 holes and not playing the entire round. If you want to know what courses looked like in Britain when they first invented the game and basically carved a course out of a pasture, you will get that feeling if you actually play here. I would not recommend this course to anyone!
Worst Conditions I've seen in Myrtle Beach
Seems like they're getting ready to close down.
No golf accessories in what was a pro shop.
Tee boxes in bad shape many bare spots, tee markers haven't been moved in days if not weeks.
Fairways have lots of grasses, as in mixture of weeds, crab grass and whatever grass they planted years ago. Granted significant rain in past week has limited their ability to mow (we were warned). We had trouble finding balls hit down the middle.
Only a few greens without bare spots. Hole #1 so bad they have a temporary green in front of the regular green, pin was 50 yards in front of the mapped center of the green.
What grass that was on the greens was like a fairway in many other courses. Some greens had sod patched in, almost all had sanded bare spots, we just moved our ball to the nearest point of relief from bare spots, sometimes hard to find.
Bunkers if not full of water were hard packed sand. Rakes were often buried in overgrown rough. We were warned at check in.
No trouble with pace of play, we didn't see anyone else on the course.
If you want a leisurely round for very little money this is the place.
If you're looking for great conditions, this is not the place.
Including fees we paid $30 each, almost worth it.
The course was on my list of places I haven't played in the area, it's now off the list.
Worst golf course I’ve ever seen
Save yourself the anger folks, I’m custom to playing goat tracks but boy this one takes the cake. Nothing good here people tee boxes, fairways, bunkers, greens, cart paths all worst you’ll find out there. I will say what a shame the place has potential I wish them well and hope they can turn it around.
You get what you pay for
Most greens were in terrible shape. “Fairway” grass was like backyard golfing. But like the title says, you get what you pay for. For a beach area course it was a decent deal for the condition of the course. Good course to learn the game on.
Think Twice before going.
I really wanted to like this course. And I did like the layout it has tons of potential. But that's about it. The tee boxes were bare playing off dirt, The fairways have grass but many different types of grass and many bare spots. The bunkers are a mess. But the worst part is the greens, I have been playing golf for over 50 years and have never seen greens as bad, they are totally unplayable. Just think back to the worst greens you have ever seen and triple that. The clubhouse/pro shop staff is amazing and are super friendly. That was the best part of my experience. I would not go back and play it again even if it were Free,
Super friendly staff
Nicest people at beach, course conditions were not great but wpuld go back because of staff. Great place to go for families with kids wanting to play
