Carolina Shores Golf & Country Club
About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2024.
Carolina Shores Golf & Country Club is situated in Calabash, N.C. a scenic fishing village. The mature woodland landscape provides a secluded and relaxing setting that is ideal for a round of golf. Though it may be peaceful, you still have to be on your toes with plenty of water hazards and sand traps lurking throughout this traditional layout. Mature trees line the fairways, requiring even further accuracy. The golf course is known for its natural crater lakes, which make an appearance on several holes. It is a course that rewards strategy and skill over brute strength. The holes will make you think, but overall Carolina Shores is a forgiving golf course that is playable for all skill levels, especially with five sets of tees ranging from 6,085 yards to a lengthy 6,755 yards.

The is challenging.
Since the high water table did not permit us to ride the course we were still challenged with the layout of the course. The greens were in fair conditions for the amount of water that we have had over the past few months. I will be golfing in the future here because I injoy the course.
not happy
course was in bad shape, greens had clumps of new grass, sand traps where simi hard and wet and fairways had other than grass in them.had a birthday discount and was sorry i used it on this course.
Nice course, Nice price
We had a mid-day tee time, I called to check tee time as mentioned in our confirmation from GolfNow. We were bumped up as the weather conditions were overcast and there were cancellations. Great for us, gave us more time for the afternoon.
Front nine had wide fairways and I hit 5 out of the nine. Back nine, they get tight and you have to really manage the course. Plus water came into play. Greens were brownish but no problems putting. Smooth. Sand traps all around, hit into a few.Had a nice round and really enjoyed the course.Staff very friendly and they gave me a complimentary guide book.
Showing some age, but uncroweded and inexpensive
First, I chose this course because of good reviews and a great price on GolfNow ($34 after tax and fees). I now understand why the price was as low as it was.
First, the good: The course layout is nice, with lots of doglegs that require a bit of shot placement (but not requiring pinpoint accuracy). Some of the holes are a bit narrower than I like, but I was having an off day with my drives, so that might not bother others. Staff were very friendly and really made you believe they appreciated their business. Pace of play was phenomenal (because the course wasn't crowded at all).
Now, the bad: Old, nondescript clubhouse, with essentially nothing available for sale - I needed some taller tees, but they only had one size. Make sure you have all the equipment you need before you show up here. Cart paths were in terrible shape, partly due to tree roots, but also due to neglect. One even had a sink hole at least two feet deep. Fairways were adequate, but definitely not plush. Rough was pretty much weeds, with lots of bare spots. Greens were somewhat bumpy, and slower than most courses in the area. Many tee boxes were nearly bare. It really feels like they are doing the least amount of maintenance possible in an effort to keep from going bankrupt.
Also - if you expect to drink while playing golf, don't expect a beverage cart here - get your drinks at the turn. I don't consider this a negative, since I normally bring my own water, but if it's hot, and you aren't prepared, you're going to get thirsty.
Having said all that, I still had fun playing here, and was quite pleased with the friendliness of the staff. They really appreciate your business and want you to come back.
Play this course for a quick 18, at much lower prices than some other courses in the area.
great value for the price
played this course years ago when it was a premier high dollar course. not in the same condition now but still a great layout and certainly fun to play. the greens were in better shape than another nearby very expensive course played the previous day. the pro and staff are extremely nice and make you want to come back.
Enjoyable Course
Website calls it Tom Jackson's masterpiece but I can think of at least 3 Jackson courses in western NC, including the one I was a member of, that are as good or better. Having said that it's a very nice layout, challenging but a lot of fun. Be aware we played on Aug. 15 and they had a sign in the pro shop they were going to be punching the greens Aug 17. Throughly enjoyable and plan to go back after the greens heal up. The tee boxes are a bit beat up but no worries, you could find a place on every tee where you could tee your ball without worrying about slipping. Recommended.
Nice Round
I've played here three times and found the staff to be friendly, helpful and courteous. Plysical plant and carts very good. Grass just off fairways could be a little shorter to help in finding balls and speeding up play, but if you keep it int he short grass, no problem. Nice course and worth a visit. I'll be back.
Nice layout, bad cart path!
I booked the teatime from golfnow app the evening before. I arrived at the bag drop and was being helped to load my bag on the cart and was ready to play within a few minutes.
I really enjoyed the layout of this course. Fairways aren't quite as wide and you have to think about the landing spot for your tee shots. Cart path is worn out and not drivable at many holes. Some holes have cart path on both sides, which is confusing for a first time player. Overall I enjoyed my round and will play again.
Good course just to work on game
The course was ok for the money.Would not pay anymore until they work on sand traps, tee areas and cart paths
Bad cart paths
Paths are very bumpy and worn down. Overall the course is in good shape with great greens. Would play again.
Good value
This course had a good mix of gentle doglegs both directions. Few holes called for a straight tee shot. The green were generally small to medium requiring accurate shots to get to the correct area. The greens were not aerified yet and were in good shape considering the record heat.
Staff was friendly but locals are not.....
This course was a short drive from our resort in North Myrtle Beach and the price was fair as a hot deal. The course was fairly easy and there weren't many challenges. The first 9 holes went smoothly as I had nobody in front of me and I was golfing alone. That all changed at hole number 10. A foursome of seniors started on 10 and refused to allow me to play through. Rule #2 on their score card stated that faster players should be allowed to play through. The two couples in front of me did NOT honor this rule and proceeded to play the last nine holes at an excruciatingly slow pace. They avoided all eye contact and we're just plain rude.
NC golf
I have played this course when it was in better shape.....fun layout it is a shame they let it go downhill
Should pay us to play
Green were awful...hardly any grass. Tee boxes and fairways were barren...Little sand in bunkers and rough was like a jungle. Cart paths were all but unusable. Save your money...Go elsewhere....Anywhere..This course is truly the worst we have played in the myrtle beach area.
Disappointing...
The layout of the course is really nice too bad the maintenance of the course was so bad. The fairways had not been cut in weeks the grass was actually going to seed. The greens were in rough shape.
I understand that the course has only recently re-opened but if you are taking people's money then you should offer a competitive product - especially when you are just starting back up. Too bad because this could be a nice course. Hopefully as the season goes on they'll be able to afford improvements. In the current condition it is not worth the money since there are so many nice courses in NMB that are in much better condition.
Oh MY GOD!
What an absolute disgrace! I have never been taken and I mean taken for a ride like this.....the course should not have been open....the rain the day before turned what remnants of a golf course there was into a complete and utter quagmire!. I could not stand on some tees as they were so wet the turf was riding over my shoes! large areas of the fairways were unplayable! the greens well that's what they were supposed to be,were so infested with disease it was a joke to call them greens. I was led to believe a new owner had made significant improvements? WHERE?
Sad, sad, sad.
After reading many reviews I thought I would take a chance on this course at a discount rate. I played 2 days in a row. The course is like a swamp. There is casual water everywhere. Of course, it was cart path only and I understand that given the conditions, but there hasn't been THAT much rain around here to justify all the casual water. The tees were mushy and muddy. The fairways were mushy and muddy. The greens weren't bad except for several being overrun with poa annua grass. The bunkers were mostly mud. I can understand why several have listed the carts as junk. Given the condition of the cartpaths I wouldn't invest in new carts either. The cartpaths were a combination of broken asphalt, tree roots and mud puddles. I don't know what is going to become of this golf course, but it needs a lot.
Not good
was not pleased with the course at all. there was no grass on the tee boxes or even any signs that there ever was. the fairways were just so-so, the greens were good and quite fast, i felt the cost was on the high side for the condition. the bunkers were compacted down and you could walk on them and not leave a foot print.
Poor Way to Start a Vacation
Although we were extended the local green fee rate, that price was too high for this course. The cart paths need major maintenance work. The carts are old, the rain covers were ripped. The greens were barely playable as they have allowed tufts of grass to grow making putting like a game of shuffleboard. The layout was fine, it may have been a nice course years ago, but you can tell that they may have financial challenges.
We did not over-seed the tee boxes this year and as a result the Bermuda grass is dormant. The golf course was purchased in July 2014. The previous owner allowed did not spray for any weeds, in order to begin the process of removing weeds from returning year after year, we put out chemicals that would not allow us to over-seed but it did help kill around 80% of the weeds on the golf course. Once the weather warms up just a little more, the Bermuda grass will turn green and start growing.
