Carolina Shores Golf & Country Club
About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2024.
Carolina Shores Golf & Country Club is situated in Calabash, N.C. a scenic fishing village. The mature woodland landscape provides a secluded and relaxing setting that is ideal for a round of golf. Though it may be peaceful, you still have to be on your toes with plenty of water hazards and sand traps lurking throughout this traditional layout. Mature trees line the fairways, requiring even further accuracy. The golf course is known for its natural crater lakes, which make an appearance on several holes. It is a course that rewards strategy and skill over brute strength. The holes will make you think, but overall Carolina Shores is a forgiving golf course that is playable for all skill levels, especially with five sets of tees ranging from 6,085 yards to a lengthy 6,755 yards.

Great value- No crowds
This track is not bad. Despite its age, fairways are fairly wide. Greens are slow but consistent. Staff is VERY friendly! Sometimes when other courses are crowded, I go here and play in 3 hours, for a great rate. Drawbacks- Lost ABC permit for 90 days starting early June 2013. No sand on carts for players to help maintain fairways. That's about it. Fun "practice" round!
Excellent value.
The course is dated, but maintained. The greens were in good shape. The price made it worthwhile.
For the price, fun to play.
The Carolina Shores course is far from a greatly maintained course. I am sure most of the players are locals and residents.
Nothing is top notch, but there are some challenging holes on the course.
My favorite holes: 10 - par 5 that challenges you if you want to crush it off the tee and go for the green with water on the left that protects the green......it got me, I just missed and rolled into the water.....16 - another par 5 that is protected by big traps on the left on your approach, you have to try and hit a very small target on your second, I couldn't reach the green, but got lucky and hit the small patch of fairway just in front of the green and made par....
Overall, for the price, I like the course. If you are a stickler on perfect fairways and greens, don't play it....
Paid $12 to play, was worth the money, but not much more.
I was excited to find a rate at $12 near Myrtle Beach. Living here, it can be quite expensive to maintain this hobby. Drove the 1/2 hr to Carolina Shores, to be quite unimpressed by conditions. Divot filled tee boxes and ankle high, weedy looking rough filled the course. Could definitely use work on ground maintenance. Greens were good, rolled true to putting force and broke true, as well. Some difficult approach shots over bunkers, and minimal water. Course was easy, overall, and a pleasantly mild challenge. Overall, I enjoyed my round, playing very well probably helped my judgement. The only drawback was the un-kept rough and teeboxes that could use some fixing up.
Somewhat neglected
Played after a full day of rain in May. Traps were all mud and water. Tee boxes were basically non existent. Course layout was Ok. Would have been disappointed had I paid more than $30
Decent layout, but past its prime.
I was interested in playing "Tom Jackson's first masterpiece", plus I wanted a break from the high-priced MB resort courses. The $27 price tag was very attractive, and the previous reviews suggested this course might offer some interesting shots.
The pluses - it is a solid, traditional layout, with a mix of left-to-right and right-to-left holes. It is very short (I hit driver twice - used a 3 hybrid on most holes, including par 5's).
The minuses - it does not drain well. I played it the day after a typical spring rain shower, and it was very muddy. The driving range was almost un-usable (plus too short to hit driver), and most bunkers were standing full of water. Carts were restricted to paths only - and the paths are VERY rough. (This is an area where they need to spend a lot of money.) The greens were very slow - initially I though this was due to the rain, but the locals that I played with said it was typical. No GPS on carts (no surprise), but also minimal yardage markers in fairway.
Overall, the layout compares favorably to several of the other "mature" coastal courses in the area, but the conditioning is subpar. Don't drive far to play it.
Very good price thru golfnow
Staff friendly, rain the night before, so it was wet in places. Their golf carts were about two years past trade-in time. I got in 12 holes before the rain storm. I have noticed here that the cart trails are not in very good shape, maybe that's only on the cheaper courses though.
Fun course to play
Nice older style course with pine tree-lined fairways, lots of sand and water (particularly on the back). Can score well with decent drives and accurate approaches. Would happily play again. Not the most challenging but lots of fun.
A fun course to play.
Interesting variety of holes.
Fun course to play.
Great value for the $
Tee boxes needed mowing.
great fairways and greens.
Course was great,it was cart path only due to recient rains. cart path is rough!
Great bang for the bucks!
The course was very playable and well maintain. The greens was good and balls rolled well.
The course is in good shape.
Fairways are lined with numerous bunkers and greens are well guarded by sand and/or water. The greens rolled slower than other courses in the area. The area received rain days prior to our arrival and standing water was present in bunkers and in areas off the fairway - no standing water on fairways. The standing water was a minor nuisance and didn't impact our enjoyment.
Enjoyed
/Course in very good condition. Only negative was the cart path.
A bit shaggy and soggy
Course was wet , so cart path only, tee boxes were shaggy, greens were a little rough, but a good place to get the rust off from winter, I think we were the only ones on the course. would I play it again No
This used to be a nice course. Got neglected. Only worth if cheap fee paid.
We played this course about 5 years ago and it was in good shape. Went back this year and was disappointed. Went because we were attracted by the low online cost (eg: $16)...great if you want to warm up your play and do not pay much attention to course conditions. No sand in traps...poor housekeeping throughout, tee boxes in rough shape, signs either gone or could not be read...appears to us that management is simply milking the place before closing for good...
Great location for North Myrtle Beach and Cherry Grove.
This was Easter week and was busy around the courses.
Rangers had everything moving.
This course has a number of great holes
There were four of us playing. Two new players. The course was great. We were a little slower than others, but there were no complaints. Course was a little wet in spots. Not bad considering all the rain the night before. I would certainly recommend this course to others.
Good course for the money we paid, lots of sand, fairways suited our style of golf
Our first time playing at this course; conditions were good.
Only downside was a long wait to start ,then our golf cart "died" two different times during the 18 holes. It had to be replaced which slowed down our pace of play. The staff were apologetic and remedied the problem promptly. Would play here again.
fun course to play
staff was friendly. we tee'd off on time and the pace of play was good very little waiting.
