Panther's Run at Ocean Ridge Plantation
About
The 18-hole Panther's Run at Ocean Ridge Plantation in Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina is a public golf course that opened in 1994. Designed by Tim Cate, Panther's Run at Ocean Ridge Plantation measures 7089 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 140 and a 73.7 USGA rating. The course features 4 sets of tees for different skill levels. The greens are bent and the fairways are bermuda.
Panther's Run was born to be a different kind of challenge than Lion's Paw. Golf course designer Tim Cate has unleashed this cat to prowl along the edge of a natural preserve and continually tests your ability to stay out of, or hit over, the surrounding marsh land. Wide fairways that twist and turn with a variety of elevations, plus scenic water features blend perfectly.
The front nine picks its way through hardwood forest while the back nine is more open. The course is laid out along the edge of a natural preserve and tests golfers' ability to negotiate the surrounding marsh land and water. The fairways twist and turn and show a variety of elevations, as much as 60 feet in fact.

Greens problem
We were looking at property in the community and decided to try out the Panthers Run course.
Overall many of the greens look like worn out carpet, threadbare.
The tee box’s and fairways were in goodshape.
The staff was exceptionally nice.
The cart paths could use some work.
I was expecting better considering the beauty of the community.
Panthers Run Played 9/13/21
The course was not in good shape. Fairways and greens had many bald/patchy spots. Should have been a $25 round.
Amazing neighborhood but terrible course condition
I had not played Panther's run in about 3 years. I remembered I liked the layout. I invited some friends to play with me that had never played any of the CAT courses. I was embarrassed. I cannot believe a home owner association with high end homes would allow the courses to become in this condition. The greens on the front were almost not puttable. The back side was better but still not up to par. They need to do some serious work on the courses before I will come back. Also note the driving range balls are so old they are unhittable.
Thank you for taking the time to review your visit to Panther's Run. We sincerely apologize we were not able to meet your expectations on this visit. The greens on Panther's Run are still relatively new (2018) and still maturing. Most of the greens are in good shape, but there are a couple on the front side that we are addressing aggressively at this time and we expect all of the greens to be in excellent condition soon and to remain that way as we move forward. We hope you will visit us again and see our continued progress.
Panthers Run
Nice layout fun trac to play greens need some work but overall a very nice place to play Had a great time
Thank you for the nice review of Panther's Run. It is definitely one of the most fun courses around to play and enjoy. The greens on this Big Cats course are still rather new and we are working to make them even better daily. We expect overall conditions to improve rapidly as we move forward and we hope you will come back soon and see our continued progress. Thanks again!
Thank you very much for the nice Five Star review of Panther's Run! We truly appreciate it. We hope you will come visit us again and maybe check out one of the other Big Cats courses as well. They are all moving solidly in a positive direction and we are very excited about the rest of 2021 and beyond!
Good but not great
The greens were really slow!!! Some holes didn’t look mowed at all. My ball was in the fairway but it looked like the rough. Check out my pic from the center of the fairway. .
Thank you for taking the time to review your round on Panther's Run. We apologize we fell short of your expectations on this visit. We are working diligently to provide all of our guests a pleasant and enjoyable golf experience, despite the many pandemic related challenges we are all facing right now. We have been spraying constantly to control summer weeds, which have been exacerbated by the exceptional rainfall totals this summer, which are more than double the typical amount. Even so, invasive grasses, etc are much improved this year over last summer and we expect that trend to continue for years to come. We hope you will visit us again and see our continued progress.
Very nice course for all levels of players.
For the price, the course was an excellent choice. The course has very nice layouts. Some generous fairways and some challenges. Good for all levels of players. The course condition was above average.
Thank you very much for the excellent review of Panther's Run! We agree, we have been working hard on the course and it is looking better all the time. We hope you will visit us again soon and see our continued progress.
Thank you very much for the great Five Star Review!! We really appreciate it.
Great course overall
First time coming, drove 2 hours and would come back any day. Great help from staff and great conditions.
Poorly maintained
Very disappointed with the course conditions. Overgrown fairways that are 1/2 crabgrass, brown greens with crabgrass. Grass growing in sand bunkers.Sad to see how they have let his course go.
Thank you for taking the time to review your recent round at Panther's Run. We apologize we were unable to meet your expectations on this visit. With rainfall at over double the normal amount for the past 30 days in our area, we have been greatly challenged during this period. Fortunately we have been able to aggressively treat for invasive grasses and the results have been significant. There has been great improvement over the last couple of weeks with the issues you described and we expect that trend to continue as we move forward. We hop you will visit us again and see our continued progress.
Humrickhouse Round
Course clearly underfunded for ongoing maintenance. Fairways have lots of crabgrass; greens browning due to lack of water, although playable. Layout pretty decent otherwise.
Thank you for taking the time to review your visit to Panther's Run. We apologize for the conditions you described. We have very aggressively treated for any and all invasive grasses and those conditions are improving daily. A growth regulator application was applied to the greens in the days just prior to your visit, which promotes horizontal growth to get a more dense coverage in areas, but can cause a temporary browning to the leaf blade (Which does not affect the playabiilty, just the color) These putting surfaces have already greened back up and are now even more full and smooth than before. We are dedicated to returning Panther's Run to prominence in the region. You likely noticed several major renovation projects that were ongoing as you played, including a significant restoration to the ninth fairway. We hope you will return again and see our continued progress.
Thank you for taking the time to review Panther's Run. We are working daily to make this Grand Strand favorite one of the top course in the area once again.
Thank you for the nice Four Star Review of Panther's Run. We really appreciated it. We hope you will visit us again soon!
We are glad you enjoyed your recent visit to Panther's Run and we hope you will return and play another round at any of The Big Cats courses soon!
Thank you very much for the nice four star review! We agree, Panther;s Run is looking better and better every day! We hope you will return soon and see our continued progress.
Staff friendly but pace of play needs some improvements
First time playing here. Inside the pro shop was busy and friendly even for my early tee time. Starter and outside staff were also friendly. Got paired with 3 gentleman and one was a regular so that helped having his knowledge of the course. The course could use some improvements- cart paths were in rough shape. The fairways had bare spots and looked to have not been cut in a few days in other areas. I understand it was in much worse shape and it has improved greatly. Some bare spots on the greens. We were like 4 th group off in the morning and the round was exceptionally slow. Well over 5 hours is awhile to play. Better courses around for the money. Sure hope money is spent here to get this course back to what I’ve heard it once was. Strongly recommend a couple of rangers - one on each side - to keep pace of play to be in someway reasonable. I expect to hear the course accommodates many vacationing golfers of which I am one. This is always the feedback you hear when you post about slow play. Im just saying OVER 5 hours is to long. Hopefully something can be done. Good luck
Course was in fairly poor condition
Bunkers were not raked and contained weeds. On one par 3 the heavy rain the day before had washed most of the sand away from the forward lip of the bunker and my ball was buried in the sand 1 foot from the the edge of the bunker which was now 18" from vertical edge of the bunker - I took a 6 because I could not get out of the bunker. had the sand been raked back up to the top edge of the bunker I could have gotten out in 1 shot - none of the bunkers had been raked. There were some dead spots on some greens. Some of the surrounds of some greens had not been mowed in days. There were bare spots on some of the fairways. It was obvious maintenance is very poor at this course.
Thank you for taking the time to review your recent round at Panther's Run. As you stated, the heavy rain the previous day, from the passing of Tropical Storm Elsa, made conditions on the day you played far less than ideal. Certainly far less than they were the day before the storm or a couple of days after, when conditions allowed for typical maintenance practices to resume. We can only apologize for the weather circumstances you encountered, which seemed to contribute heavily to your issues with the course. As for other concerns, please know that we are working daily to continue to improve all aspects of condition on all of The Big Cats courses, including a significant fairway renovation and enhancement on Panther's Run, which may have also looked less appealing after the heavy rains of the previous 24 hours. But we apologize we were not able to meet your expectations on this visit and hope you will give us another opportunity in the future.
Thank you for the great Five Star Review of Panther's Run. It is definitely a great layout and always fun to play. We hope you will come back and visit us again soon!
