Panther's Run at Ocean Ridge Plantation
About
The 18-hole Panther's Run at Ocean Ridge Plantation in Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina is a public golf course that opened in 1994. Designed by Tim Cate, Panther's Run at Ocean Ridge Plantation measures 7089 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 140 and a 73.7 USGA rating. The course features 4 sets of tees for different skill levels. The greens are bent and the fairways are bermuda.
Panther's Run was born to be a different kind of challenge than Lion's Paw. Golf course designer Tim Cate has unleashed this cat to prowl along the edge of a natural preserve and continually tests your ability to stay out of, or hit over, the surrounding marsh land. Wide fairways that twist and turn with a variety of elevations, plus scenic water features blend perfectly.
The front nine picks its way through hardwood forest while the back nine is more open. The course is laid out along the edge of a natural preserve and tests golfers' ability to negotiate the surrounding marsh land and water. The fairways twist and turn and show a variety of elevations, as much as 60 feet in fact.

Thank you for the nice Four Star Review of Panther's Run. We really appreciated it. We hope you will visit us again soon!
We are glad you enjoyed your recent visit to Panther's Run and we hope you will return and play another round at any of The Big Cats courses soon!
Thank you very much for the nice four star review! We agree, Panther;s Run is looking better and better every day! We hope you will return soon and see our continued progress.
Staff friendly but pace of play needs some improvements
First time playing here. Inside the pro shop was busy and friendly even for my early tee time. Starter and outside staff were also friendly. Got paired with 3 gentleman and one was a regular so that helped having his knowledge of the course. The course could use some improvements- cart paths were in rough shape. The fairways had bare spots and looked to have not been cut in a few days in other areas. I understand it was in much worse shape and it has improved greatly. Some bare spots on the greens. We were like 4 th group off in the morning and the round was exceptionally slow. Well over 5 hours is awhile to play. Better courses around for the money. Sure hope money is spent here to get this course back to what I’ve heard it once was. Strongly recommend a couple of rangers - one on each side - to keep pace of play to be in someway reasonable. I expect to hear the course accommodates many vacationing golfers of which I am one. This is always the feedback you hear when you post about slow play. Im just saying OVER 5 hours is to long. Hopefully something can be done. Good luck
Course was in fairly poor condition
Bunkers were not raked and contained weeds. On one par 3 the heavy rain the day before had washed most of the sand away from the forward lip of the bunker and my ball was buried in the sand 1 foot from the the edge of the bunker which was now 18" from vertical edge of the bunker - I took a 6 because I could not get out of the bunker. had the sand been raked back up to the top edge of the bunker I could have gotten out in 1 shot - none of the bunkers had been raked. There were some dead spots on some greens. Some of the surrounds of some greens had not been mowed in days. There were bare spots on some of the fairways. It was obvious maintenance is very poor at this course.
Thank you for taking the time to review your recent round at Panther's Run. As you stated, the heavy rain the previous day, from the passing of Tropical Storm Elsa, made conditions on the day you played far less than ideal. Certainly far less than they were the day before the storm or a couple of days after, when conditions allowed for typical maintenance practices to resume. We can only apologize for the weather circumstances you encountered, which seemed to contribute heavily to your issues with the course. As for other concerns, please know that we are working daily to continue to improve all aspects of condition on all of The Big Cats courses, including a significant fairway renovation and enhancement on Panther's Run, which may have also looked less appealing after the heavy rains of the previous 24 hours. But we apologize we were not able to meet your expectations on this visit and hope you will give us another opportunity in the future.
Thank you for the nice four star review! We appreciate it very much!
5 hours and 15 minute round
$80 for 2 people so I guess I should have expected a horrid pace of play…The course is in okay shape although I liked the layout. It would be worth playing again if it wasn’t going to be so slow.
Thank you for the good review of Panther's Run and for the feedback on pace of play. Summertime is the toughest season to get golfers around the course because we get a lot of players who rarely play and even many first-timers who are down on a beach vacation and decide to try golf. The summer heat also tends to make people move a little more slowly as well. But we will definitely continue to do our best to keep our pace of play to around 4 and half hours, which is typical for Grand Strand area golf courses. We hope you will visit us again soon and see our continued progress.
Fun Course
Lots of people rag on the Big Cat Courses in Myrtle Beach. I think they’re a lot of fun. The course was in pretty good shape, especially for how much they charged. The staff was great. We basically had the course to ourselves. Playing the rest of the courses later this week!
Thank you for the nice review! It is rare that people take the time to post a positive review, at least far more rarely than a negative, so we really appreciate it! All of the Big Cats courses are actually in much improved condition right now and we expect them to continue to improve daily as we move through the rest of 2021. Thanks again!!
Could be better.
Bridges and cart paths were horrible. Greens seem to run true but were sparse. Should lower price a little more for condition.
Thank you for taking the time to review your recent visit to Panther's Run. We will definitely be doing some cosmetic work on bridges this summer and again in the winter. They are structurally very sound, but do need some sprucing up. With the exception of a couple of spots where some sodding is yet to completely tack over and fill in (damage repaired from winter kill), the greens are actually in very good shape and getting even better daily. We also are completing an extensive re-sodding of one of the fairways and this will be completely covered over by Mid July. So overall, we are happy with the direction Panther's Run has taken in recent weeks! Thanks again.
Good value
The course was in overall good shape. Nice layout. Tees were a little bare. Nice course for the money
Thank you for the nice review! With the much needed rain in recent days, the entire course is already looking even better. We hope you will return soon and see our continued progress!
Not Bad Overall
We played today despite rain all day. The overall course condition appeared pretty rough over all. Many of the fairways were burnt and the greens were also rough. The cart path also had a lot of rough patches. At one time this course was a premiere “‘must play” in the area. I’m not sure if that is the case in the current condition (due to Covid?). You will not find a friendlier staff though and I hope they return to full glory soon!
Thank you very much for the nice review! We truly appreciate it. It has definitely been a challenging year all around for us and other golf courses, but the last two months have been particularly difficult as we have been in drought conditions and have had to ration our very limited water supply and also go very lightly on chemical applications that can harm the weakened golf course grass. Fortunately, the recent break in the drought has led to quickly improving overall conditions and we are thrilled to see the courses all looking much better already. We hope you will return again in the future and see our continued progress.
Weeds Weeds Weeds
Like the title says. Weeds. All over the place. Worst part was on the greens. Impossible to read the greens with the weeds all over. Cart paths look like a bombing range. Course needs some serious money put into it for it to be in even decent shape. I won’t be back.
Thank you for taking the time to review your recent visit to Panther's Run. We apologize we fell short of meeting your expectations. Due to extremely dry conditions over the past two months, we have had to be very careful with herbicides and other applications to make sure we do not harm the weakened golf course grass along with any invasive plants. The great news for us is that we have finally received some rain and things are looking much better already. this is allowing us to more aggressively treat any invasive grasses and weeds as well and overall course conditions will be improving daily as we move forward (Assuming we get a reasonable amount of rain!) Thanks again and we hope you will come visit us again in the future and see our progress.
Goat Track
Really rough conditions at Panther's Run today. Grass on the greens was the longest I think I've ever seen, there were weed patches growing on most of them. I know it hasn't rained in a while, but pretty much all the fairways were dry as a bone and sandy. Beautiful course, and great layout, I can see how it could be an excellent course, but unfortunately the conditions were just not good today.
We sincerely apologize we were unable to meet your expectations on your recent visit. You are correct, it has been an extremely hot and dry period for us over the past 2 months. In fact, we did not have one drop of rain on our courses in over 8 weeks and this made maintenance extremely difficult. We have addressed the issues you mentioned, but we have to be very careful in such extreme conditions to make sure you do not kill the weakened golf course grass along with the weeds. The really good news is that we have FINALLY received some significant rainfall and things are greening up quickly all over. We are now able to more aggressively treat any invasive plants and restore the course to a more preferred overall condition. We again apologize you did not catch us at our best, but we hope you will return again in the future and see our progress. Thanks.
Thank you for taking the time to review Panther's Run. We are working daily to make this Grand Strand favorite one of the top course in the area once again.
