Oyster Bay Golf Links, in Sunset Beach near Calabash, N.C., opened in 1983, a precursor to the Grand Strand's first true, golf course building boom.

Oyster Bay Golf Links, another classic creation by Developer Larry Young and Architect Dan Maples, is a rare blend of the various philosophies of golf course architecture.

Oyster Bay is one of the most beautiful and diversified courses to be found anywhere. It is located in Sunset Beach, NC just minutes North of its predecessor, Marsh Harbour.

"The real story is that Oyster Bay is still one of the must-plays of Myrtle Beach," a TravelGolf.com reviewer said. "The haunting layout on the shores of Twin Lakes has a collection of holes that are as well-conceived and scenery-soaked as any in the Grand Strand."

The par-70 course is just under 6,700 yards and has two island green par 3s. The course does show some signs of its age, including the clubhouse, the range with its beat-up ball machine, and the greens are old-fashioned Bermuda known for being slow.

Top Rated Course No More

Was excited to play Oyster Bay. The week after Christmas, the weather was ideal. The course layout was great. The shape, not even close. The bunkers looked like they hadn’t seen new sand or been raked in years. The greens where hard and rolled out. The fairways were nice. The tee boxes were too. For the money, it simply was not worth the drive.

Great Day at Oyster Bay

Great layout. Love the course. Pin placements were a bit suspect today and pace Was slower than I like but still a great course and the free breakfast sandwich, lunch and 2 drinks was a great deal!

Great round

Went to Sunset Beach for Thanksgiving and decided to play at Oyster Bay. Course was in good shape. Hard to read breaks on greens which made it fun. Overall great course. My only gripe is I wish the tee box signage and signage from one hole to the next was a little Better some holes were very confusing to find.

Great layout and fun but

Fun to play and you’ll see gators. Lots of water and nice area. But, fairway and rough conditions are not great. Cart paths are in disrepair. Price too high compared to other courses nearby.

Enjoyable course

The staff are very pleasant and friendly. The greens were in excellent condition. The fairways and tee boxes were in generally in very good condition; there were a few exceptions, but not many. The sand in the bunkers needed work. Some were in good shape but many had not been raked and looked as if there had been too much water left standing for too long. The layout is interesting and fun to play; gives the golfer a lot of variety of shots to play. There is a good bit of water on the back, but with good shot-making and decision-making the water is avoidable. A good tee shot in the fairway is required on almost every hole.

Nice layout

Very challenging looks from the tee. I am a 10 handicap and was challenged throughout but fair.

Played the whites.

Course in great shape. Greens not too fast but not slow.

Had a good round.

Common scents

We were a 2 some, first off #1, got to the turn, the starter was going to let us go thru, pro said to wait, the double book tee times. The pro let a 4 some and a 2 some tee off before we could play on. The 2 groups, they were together, let us play thru, which was wonderful of them. We had playe the first 9 in under 2 hours. Starter or others couldn’t figure that one out.

Other than that little issue, it was a great course and a great day of golf. Staff was very friendly, course was great. Would definitely recommend Ouster Bay to anyone

Brought 12 golfers down. This course has a great layout but conditions not the best. Started out on 10. Had a hard time finding balls on 11/12 because of all the leaves. A lot dead mowed grass in most of the fairways. Greens a little rough. I really enjoyed the layout. Played here 3 yrs ago and course was in great shape then. Starters and staff great.

Not worth the money

This course was one of the greats years ago. The layout is impressive with some wonderfully designed holes. Unfortunately, the condition of the course is very poor. A lot of bare patches on the greens, sparse grass on the fairway, many low areas that need improved drainage, poor or limited sand in bunkers, little or no signage, and an extremely degraded cart path. Staff was mostly friendly, save one cart attendant. With all the golf options in the Myrtle Beach area Oyster Bay is definitely one to cross OFF your list at any price.
