Pohick Bay Golf Course

We played a foursome here for the first time. I’ve already read through the reviews that the course was challenging, but indeed I think this is the most challenging course I’ve ever been. The course has some extremely steep areas (like 2-3 holes) where I thought it was hard for me to drive the cart around. The course was generally managed well - there was one hole with a wet bunker. There was one hole with lots of divots in the fairway.

The Marshal had let us know that there were some cancelations today so he has been letting all teams play earlier than their tee times. About 5 mins into our first hole (still not yet of our original tee time), another foursome teed up while we were playing in the greens. We had uncomfortable plays for about 8 holes where 8 ppl played at the same time… we felt upset that the marshal didn’t wait for at least 8 min for us to play and also that the next team kept teeing up while we are still playing our shots in the holes. Like, are you gonna hit the ball at us?! Why?

Give us some breathing rooms. We felt rushed during our entire time there.. and especially for the firs timers in this course. We were so rushed that we teed at white and red tees simultaneously. Hitting our second shots and putting all simultaneously.

Overall the course, driving range and practice greens are great. Biggest weakness is the clubhouse. Very minimal merchandise and even less with food and beverages. I've learned that the higher the greens fees the better quality you'll find in the clubhouse. This course is about $68 per round including a cart. That price is about the middle ground around here but literally pays for the golfing experience. Nothing more.

All in all, everything was good. The course is challenging enough, staff is friendly and relatively easy to get a good tee time.

A few bunkers were missing sand, but no big deal.

This happens anywhere, but we had a 4some playing as though they were on the tour with no one in front of them and taking forever. The Marshall could have reminded them of course etiquette and kept the rate of play.

It was fine, weather was nice and we were having a good time. I will be coming back.

Unfortunately abut the 15 hole was a backup of players we had to wait a good 20 or 30 minutes; this is unfortunate

This course was in amazing shape! The rough was a little long due to the rain we’ve had in the area recently but otherwise it has the best conditions I’ve seen in the area recently.

The staff is super friendly and helpful. The course layout is tough for a first timer so be sure to use a map and leave the driver in the bag often.

I am looking forward to coming back for a second round soon.

Pace of Play can be slow, start early. Otherwise, great course.

Just a nice course! Nothing bad to say - great for value. Course layout can be a mess (lots of turns) but otherwise lots of fun.

I have played Pohick many times over the past year in various types of conditions but today’s round was unbearable. I read a few reviews and thought “Hey a Thursday morning tee time shouldn’t be bad”. Boy was I wrong. After we got off hole 1’s green we waited for every shot throughout the remainder of the round, as there were at least 3 groups ahead that we’re taking multiple shots and holding up play.

We had a “marshal’” come by on hole 4 after we had been sitting in the tee box for 5 minutes. When we explained that 2-3 groups seemed to be backed up, he stated that he didn’t know the tee-times but that they try to stagger. We asked him to speak to the groups ahead but I doubt he did because nothing improved.

After a 3 hour front 9 the entire 4-some in front of us quit. When we approached 10’s tees and saw the backup, 2 of our 4 quit. Myself and the remaining golfer skipped holes 10 and 11 to get past 2 groups and still ended with a near 5-hour round.

Beyond the pace, the course is fine for your typical neighborhood course. The greens are meh, the fairways are good in some areas and bad in others. All in all you can find better value in the area, especially when you consider time spent standing around.

Pace of play needs to be monitored. We quit after 14 holes The 3 golfers in front of us hit 2-3 balls for most shots

A disappointing outing on a beautiful day

Pohick has the potential to be a great course but both times I’ve played there have been issues with pace of play. I haven’t had this issue (at least not this bad!) at similar tee times at different courses around the area. During my most recent round, we were stuck behind a group of four beginners who were so slow we were waiting on every shot & they had very poor etiquette (not being ready to hit, not repairing divots, etc). The group did not allow us to play through and we wanted to complete a full round so opted not to skip ahead. When we politely raised the issue with the course marshall when he came by, he asserted that it was “just that time of day” and didn’t say anything to the group. Love the course but don’t think I can come back after two insanely slow rounds filled with frustration.

The layout of the course was really good and challenged those who want to just hit the ball off the tee as far as they can. You had to be methodical in order to shoot low on the course. However, the bunkers are a complete disaster. All of them were basically pools of water or mud.
