Pohick Bay Golf Course
About
Pohick Bay Regional Park Golf Course in Lorton has been one of the area's most popular public courses since it opened in the early 1980s. Playing at Pohick Bay is like playing two golf courses in one, with a front nine that has long, tree-lined fairways and a hillier back nine that features a variety of doglegs and water holes. It is a definitely a shot-maker's course so be prepared to use some creativity and some thoughtful strategizing doesn’t hurt either. The constant up and down of the golf course provides uneven lies and a number of blind shots. The dramatic terrain also makes it a tough course to walk. Trees frame most of the holes, demanding accuracy but also providing a peaceful and secluded feel. Pohick Bay Regional Park Golf Course is popular amongst locals for being one of the most challenging and yet also one of the most affordable courses in the area.

Great winter golf day
I played this course on the rare 60+ degree day in February. The course was in great condition and even the bunkers were well maintained. The greens were true and held an approach shot with ease. I played on a very busy day and still managed a 4:15 round. I would recommend playing this course, but be prepared to not pull driver on every par 4 as it is full of doglegs. Go and enjoy!
Thank you for your review! We hope to see you again sometime soon.
winter golf - pretty nice
Staff was great and they got us off earlier, thanks. It was winter golf, cart path only (good call) conditions were very good and the greens were in nice shape. Deer and fox were all over the course. A fun day for 45 degrees and playing golf.

Great maintenance
I hadn’t played Pohick in over a year. I was totally surprised at how well the course was presented - especially for January. The greens were exceptional. Bunkers were well raked with nice white sand. Fairways well cut and lush. Pace of play was fantastic. I had a great time. Course also has a terrific variation of holes; doglegs, water, elevation changes etc. Folks in the clubhouse couldn’t have been nicer. Even the traffic going home on 95 South couldn’t wipe the smile off my face.

Challenging layout
Many things to challenge the average golfer: tough par 3's, sloping fairways and greens, sharp doglegs and inability at times to see water hazards, green/pin from tee box and fairways on several holes. Excellent views and lot's of fun!!! A preferred public course in the area but also relatively well maintained. At this time of year, greens are pretty beat up but still in better condition that most other public courses.

October Golfing blast
Always enjoy Pohick Golf, all of the greens and fairways are in the most pristine conditions and the beautiful course layout surmised by Virginia wildlife and trees line makes this course one of the best kept secrets of Northern VA golf.

Review of Pohick Bay Golf Course
Course is taken care of. Greens in good shape. Fairway cut was a little tall when I played. Pins were tucked in some hard positions. It’s a great course to play if you can catch it around 40 bucks for 18 holes.
My First Time at Pohick
Great staff, well maintained course and range, and quite challenging meandering golf course. Enjoyed it.
Great track, needs lots of TLC
Saw most recent reviews and decided to play anyway. The course is challenging, nice layout. Greens were punched recently, thus slow, but recovering. Fairways weren’t in the greatest shape, burned patches and soggy, this is where the course needs attention. Bunkers were racked and pretty good. Rough was thick and deep. Looks like they are working on the tee boxes too. A rate in the low $40 range will not disappoint. There are better tracks around this area if you are paying more than $50 w/cart.
Enjoy blind tee shots on EVERY hole?
Not worth it. Awful tee boxes. Awful fairways. Every tee shot is blind (except for par 3s). Yardages are way off. But staff is very friendly and the practice areas are decent.

Great time - rough greens
Fairways in good shape, greens not so much. The aeration holes and sand make your putting difficult. Check in was awesome - very friendly gentleman at the front desk as well as the guy at the end of my round who drive the cart back to the shed from my car for me..

Overpriced
The fairways were atrocious at best. More crabgrass and burn spots than actual grass. Greens are pitted and had weeds rolled into them. Wont be coming back for another round.

Fun, but tired, course
Pohick Bay is a very interesting golf course in terms of layout and challenge. 50 dollars with a cart seems to be a reasonable charge for this area of the country, but not exactly a great deal either for the condition of the course. If it was pristine, I would expect to pay 75 for the round. That said, I would play here again under the current conditions below at around $40-45 and not be disappointed.
It appears to me that it has been a tough summer for the area courses without the resources to adjust to the conditions. If you play here in the next 30 days from my review, expect fairways to be of mixed grass and conditions, greens to be mostly nice, roll well (although a touch slow), but pockmarked from the increasingly terrible offense of not repairing ball marks (shame on you, all of the groups that preceded me for the week), this could be mitigated by changing cup locations more frequently - as this appeared to be only a weekly occurrence here based on the conditions of the cup (but maybe the patronage is just rough on the course). The areas surrounding the greens need considerable work - a lot of bare areas and thin covering can be found immediately adjacent to many greens, and again, lots of mixed grass types or invasive grasses being allowed to take over in some areas. The chipping and putting greens are not bad at all, offering plenty of room to work on your short game. The driving range was once a beauty, offering shade and a reasonable amount of stations, however the hitting mats saw their last days of usefulness about 2 years ago, and while I may have missed it, didn't see any turf hitting areas.
The staff and starters were fantastic, friendly and very helpful.
I played midday on a Thursday and the course was relatively empty. I would expect on a weekend this course to be busy, and a bit slow because the layout and blind tee shots makes it difficult to determine when it is safe to play on.
Final Tip - use a GPS app to see the hole from the tee box - and if you can't see the rough from the tee, assume it slopes away from the center of the fairway.

Just a little shaggy
Enjoyed the round at Pohick. Not a long course but challenging. Tee boxes and fringe were shaggy. Greens were in average condition. Could use some work. Need local knowledge on several holes. I would go back.
