Pohick Bay Golf Course
About
Pohick Bay Regional Park Golf Course in Lorton has been one of the area's most popular public courses since it opened in the early 1980s. Playing at Pohick Bay is like playing two golf courses in one, with a front nine that has long, tree-lined fairways and a hillier back nine that features a variety of doglegs and water holes. It is a definitely a shot-maker's course so be prepared to use some creativity and some thoughtful strategizing doesn’t hurt either. The constant up and down of the golf course provides uneven lies and a number of blind shots. The dramatic terrain also makes it a tough course to walk. Trees frame most of the holes, demanding accuracy but also providing a peaceful and secluded feel. Pohick Bay Regional Park Golf Course is popular amongst locals for being one of the most challenging and yet also one of the most affordable courses in the area.

Good Course
This course isn't a real long course but the architect made up for it by making a lot of the tee shots blind. I was luckily playing with someone who had played the course before so I was able to get some information about where to aim my tee shots.
The greens were in good shape however some of the fairways were beat up a bit but I will say that it had rained for about a week straight so there were likely delays in course maintenance.
I give this course 3 stars because it isn't as good as some others in the area but it is a pretty good golf experience if you are in the area for more than just a vacation, as it is not on my list of places I would take my golf buddies if they were to come in town and we could only play 2 or 3 courses though it is a pretty good course.
Good course
I love the challenges the course presents for all levels of players. It's most difficult challenges are reading the speed and lines of the greens. I'm a fourth year golfer with a 8 handicap and play this course two or three times a month.
First time and will come back often
Lovely day. Played with two locals (Tom and John) who gave me tips since it was my first time playing the course. Lots of elevation changes.

Great course but sometime the staff is more concerned cooing the course at dusk
avoid after rainfall
Course was still a bit soggy even though it hadn't rained in several days. My buddies and I tore up alot of grass on a course that could have used an extra day of so to dry out. Other than that everthing was very good
Don't think about walking
This course is always a blast to play. It is not in the greatest of shape right now but still a lot of fun to play with 3 friends. We played on a Saturday in October and the fall colors looked sweet. You have to score on the first 6 holes because after that things get tougher. Amen corner here is 12-14, although #12 has gotten much easier since they moved the tee box up 100 yards. #13' is still the monster hole here and unfortunately they have lost the grass on the fairway between the pond and the green. My shot rolled back 30 yards on that hill. All in all a great track with no houses in sight and every hole looks different. We did get interrupted by a Boy Scout troop hiking in the woods on #14 but other than that it was a quiet and colorful round in the woods.
I would compare it to Generals Ridge with better cart paths.
Pohick - 10/15
Course was in great shape. Greens were perfect. Staff was friendly.
Not busy at all. Were able to tee off before our actual start time. Played 18 in under 4 hours.
Pace of Play and Fairways
Slow play was horrific. After talking to others who have played it they agreed and identified the problem as too many of the regular golfers on that course are notoriously slow. Plus the rough is way too long and thick for a public course which contributes to slow play. For this reason, I gave the course an overall rating of "fair."
Even from the white tees (5,897), there are too many holes that require a lot of carry just to reach the fairway. That is unacceptable for high handicap players and even older good golfers (my current index is 11.7) who do not hit the ball 200 yards anymore. Moving to the gold tees would be an option but they are 4,948 yards. Too much like an executive course.
Don't consider walking the course unless you are strong and in good shape. It is not a course for beginners.
Never tried the food service. N/A is not an option.
Pohick Bay is ok
Not the best course and not the worst course as long as you're not paying full price for your rounds here. Staff can be a bit full of themselves and rather unpleasant.
Good condition ... Long rough
Blind tee shots and long rough cause speed of play issues. Balls landing in fairways or near green seemingly disappear into the rough. Gotta play this a few times to learn the proper aim points.
Greens in good shape.
Worth a look
Played on a wed. afternoon, sent of the back nine, course pretty empty. Course has a few doglegs, so a yardage book would come in handy. Greens in average shape and somewhat slow. Not a horrible deal on golf now. Probably a twenty to twenty five dollar course in most of America. One big negative is I dropped my rangefinder in grassy area in parking lot and have yet to have someone turn it in. Guess I should not expect miracles.
Average course, crawling pace of play
The course is average & in decent condition. I got a good deal on golfnow for 18 holes & a cart but only played about 15 holes due to the slow pace of play. After about 4 hrs of slow play from groups in front of us I decided to call it a day. This was pretty shocking considering I tee'd off at noon on a Wednesday. Other people quit early too or just didn't make the turn due to the horrible pace of play. The course needs to do something to speed up play.
Blind shots
Almost every other hole has a blind tee shot and the 18th has both a blind tee shot and a blind approach into the green. It's ok to have one or two per course but this many is not only frustrating but potentially dangerous on a public course. Beautiful scenery but the marshals may have well not even existed - regular logjams.
Decent Value if you have the time!
Course lacked a marshall to improve pace of play (nearly 5 hours for 18). Lots of blind holes that unless you have prior knowledge will result in misplaced shots and higher scores.
Good Value
This course is a great value not far from DC. It is very well maintained, especially for how late in the season it is. The course would be in better shape if players fixed divots and ball marks. This course if pretty difficult the first time as there are a lot of blind tee shots and it is difficult to judge how much room you have in certain areas. But most fairways are generous.
Fun course
Fun layout, but many tee shots require less than driver. Greens were rather slow, but smooth if you were able to avoid the unrepaired ball marks (most were clearly older than a few days and still never touched). Staff was very friendly, limited pro shop. The range is not very good, mainly because the mats seem overly firm and do not have rubber tees. I couldn't warm up with irons off tees or fairway woods.
Not for the fiant of heart
Very hard course, narrow fairways. Very wet, standing water in some spots, it did rain the previous day. Taller grass than expected in many spots.
Course in good shape;greens excellent
Enjoyed the course; well maintained. A little ticked that a playing companion paid a little more than half what I paid. He got his tee time/round from another discount golf broker
Excellent Course
I enjoyed the course design. Numerous blind tee shots with some risk/reward opportunities. Short par 5's which are great for scoring well.
Shot My All-Time Best
I shot my new all time low score (75). So, I had a great day. The pace was decent. We waited a few times, but not for very long. (We were a twosome wedged between several foursomes.)
The course was wet from overnight rains. That forced the Cart Path Only rule. Of course, ball marks, divots and unraked bunkers were numerous. For the life of me I can't understand why so many "golfers" do such damage the course without the tiniest effort to set it straight. Come on!
I didn't partake in food or beverage aside from free cups of ice water provided. Thank you Pohick, a great bonus.
