Pohick Bay Golf Course
About
Pohick Bay Regional Park Golf Course in Lorton has been one of the area's most popular public courses since it opened in the early 1980s. Playing at Pohick Bay is like playing two golf courses in one, with a front nine that has long, tree-lined fairways and a hillier back nine that features a variety of doglegs and water holes. It is a definitely a shot-maker's course so be prepared to use some creativity and some thoughtful strategizing doesn’t hurt either. The constant up and down of the golf course provides uneven lies and a number of blind shots. The dramatic terrain also makes it a tough course to walk. Trees frame most of the holes, demanding accuracy but also providing a peaceful and secluded feel. Pohick Bay Regional Park Golf Course is popular amongst locals for being one of the most challenging and yet also one of the most affordable courses in the area.

Pohick Bay is ok
Not the best course and not the worst course as long as you're not paying full price for your rounds here. Staff can be a bit full of themselves and rather unpleasant.
Good condition ... Long rough
Blind tee shots and long rough cause speed of play issues. Balls landing in fairways or near green seemingly disappear into the rough. Gotta play this a few times to learn the proper aim points.
Greens in good shape.
Worth a look
Played on a wed. afternoon, sent of the back nine, course pretty empty. Course has a few doglegs, so a yardage book would come in handy. Greens in average shape and somewhat slow. Not a horrible deal on golf now. Probably a twenty to twenty five dollar course in most of America. One big negative is I dropped my rangefinder in grassy area in parking lot and have yet to have someone turn it in. Guess I should not expect miracles.
Average course, crawling pace of play
The course is average & in decent condition. I got a good deal on golfnow for 18 holes & a cart but only played about 15 holes due to the slow pace of play. After about 4 hrs of slow play from groups in front of us I decided to call it a day. This was pretty shocking considering I tee'd off at noon on a Wednesday. Other people quit early too or just didn't make the turn due to the horrible pace of play. The course needs to do something to speed up play.
Blind shots
Almost every other hole has a blind tee shot and the 18th has both a blind tee shot and a blind approach into the green. It's ok to have one or two per course but this many is not only frustrating but potentially dangerous on a public course. Beautiful scenery but the marshals may have well not even existed - regular logjams.
Decent Value if you have the time!
Course lacked a marshall to improve pace of play (nearly 5 hours for 18). Lots of blind holes that unless you have prior knowledge will result in misplaced shots and higher scores.
Good Value
This course is a great value not far from DC. It is very well maintained, especially for how late in the season it is. The course would be in better shape if players fixed divots and ball marks. This course if pretty difficult the first time as there are a lot of blind tee shots and it is difficult to judge how much room you have in certain areas. But most fairways are generous.
Fun course
Fun layout, but many tee shots require less than driver. Greens were rather slow, but smooth if you were able to avoid the unrepaired ball marks (most were clearly older than a few days and still never touched). Staff was very friendly, limited pro shop. The range is not very good, mainly because the mats seem overly firm and do not have rubber tees. I couldn't warm up with irons off tees or fairway woods.
Not for the fiant of heart
Very hard course, narrow fairways. Very wet, standing water in some spots, it did rain the previous day. Taller grass than expected in many spots.
Course in good shape;greens excellent
Enjoyed the course; well maintained. A little ticked that a playing companion paid a little more than half what I paid. He got his tee time/round from another discount golf broker
Excellent Course
I enjoyed the course design. Numerous blind tee shots with some risk/reward opportunities. Short par 5's which are great for scoring well.
Shot My All-Time Best
I shot my new all time low score (75). So, I had a great day. The pace was decent. We waited a few times, but not for very long. (We were a twosome wedged between several foursomes.)
The course was wet from overnight rains. That forced the Cart Path Only rule. Of course, ball marks, divots and unraked bunkers were numerous. For the life of me I can't understand why so many "golfers" do such damage the course without the tiniest effort to set it straight. Come on!
I didn't partake in food or beverage aside from free cups of ice water provided. Thank you Pohick, a great bonus.
good work
Greens are nice and very fast at times and staff did a great job maintaining course after a couple days of rain
Straight Forward with Sufficient Challenges
This was my first time playing this course and my friend and I decided to walk. It is a beautiful, well-maintained course, but be advised that it's extremely hilly. You know you've really had a good workout when you've finished playing 18. Nice driving/putting range and very friendly/helpful staff. Course was very wet, so played a little tougher than I imagine it normally plays. Well worth the trip.
Up and down and side to side
I'm extremely impressed with this muni course. The starting hole gave me serious concern because it is a pretty severe sidehill downhill shot, and I was thinking to myself what have I gotten into. :| Even though that was a recurring theme, including lots of sidehill uphill shots as well, it wasn't excessive to the point of being annoying. They had not been able to mow for several days due to rain, so the rough was I think more extreme than normal and very heavy. Thankfully, I stayed out of it most of the day. The greens were very receptive, immaculately groomed and ran pretty well even though they were damp. There were good maps and suggestions on the marble hole markers. Pay attention to hole 11 though, the tees have been moved WAY up, like 70 yards. The card is correct, not the hole marker.
As always, if you want to score then take a cart. If you are more into fitness, then walk. This course will wear you out and fatigue will be a factor if you walk, especially in the heat. I saw plenty of watering stations. No refreshments cart the day I played. Not sure if that was because of the weather and number of players or not.
The staff was very friendly overall, and seemed to be very attentive and made me feel like they were genuinely glad I was there at their facility. Safe to say, that is RARE. It was my first time at the course, and the starter asked me, by my first name, at the end of the round if I had enjoyed the course. It took me a second to respond because I was so shocked. That reinforces the notion that they care. Again, rare.
Bottom line, I see this course being a once a month for me. I look forward to playing it in dryer conditions though, with less punishing rough and faster greens. Hope that day comes soon. This place is definitely a public course gem and worth a visit.
...is there another decent course around here?
...it's not a bad course but they overbook it and charge a lot to play it and the course has a lot of verticality and can be really hard for short players, players who can't hit straight, and it always is full of middle-aged and elder players so the pace is always so slow and things tend to spiral out of control there.
There really is not much to talk about this course in terms of "golf". it is maybe a C on the scale of difficulty and in terms of layout, both. The fairways are wide enough to invite you to hit the ball wildly into the trees. They are really not long enough to be a challenge from the back tees. Not really tight enough to be a challenge from the fairways. I would say the course is more of a junk-ball pitcher, it certainly is not a flat course with the holes right in front of you. Just about every hole except #7-#9 has some funk to it and is a decent challenge in some way. But it is not really "hard". That is a critical shortcoming...it is challenging (and expensive) enough to keep "serious golfers" coming back to it, but not hard or expensive enough for them to give-up playing it so they tend to collect here like driftwood and clog-up the course. Believe me, with Ft. Belvoir, Forest Greens, Augustine and the Gauntlet right down I-95, Generals' Ridge, Lee Hill, Twin Lakes, the list goes on and on... there are much-better, tougher courses relatively close nearby for the same money. I think this course may be fairly impressive the first few times that you play it but after that it will lose its luster simply because it is so expensive for what you get out of it in terms of golf and the pace of play is so, so so slow. It's really just a little too easy and the people who play here just take it too seriously, while on the other hand they are rarely good enough to match their level of seriousness..and they're slow. You'll be pulling your hair out by the 5th hole. I guarantee you that 5 hours will seem like a good round to you. I have played with people quit in the middle of the backside and start over at the front.
course mangement required
Bombs away off the tee not always required. Smart tee shots to specific locations goes along way. Hit to your desired yardage locale and you will enjoy this course. Nice forced carries offer challenges. Strategic pin placements offer challenges too. Course is in great condition. Pace of play may be an issue. Play with patients and enjoy the day.
Fun course with different elevations that'll surely give you a challenge.
First time playing here and was really fun.I got the hot deal from GolfNow app,$20 for 18hole with carts, can't beat that! This course really makes you feel like you're away from the city bc of the abundance of trees and also there's a wild life refuge close by.Over all I would definitely come back here and play again.
Great course.
Loved the greens and the elevated tees/greens. A must play.
Seaview Stay & Play Golf Package
Seaview Stay & Play Golf Package
definitely should add that there are NO
repeat NO
houses around the course
One big redeeming feature.
Still I would stay away from this course on Saturdays during the "season". On Sundays it should be much better in terms of pace of play.
