Old South Golf Links
About
The 18-hole Old South Golf Links in Bluffton, S.C. is a public course that opened in 1991. Designed by Clyde Johnston, Old South Golf Links measures 6,772 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 129 and a 72.4 USGA rating. The course features four sets of tees for different skill levels.
Johnston designed Old South Golf Links in keeping with the beautiful Lowcountry's natural landscape. "Old South Golf Links was designed not only to provide an enjoyable yet challenging golf game, but also to preserve the natural beauty of the land," he said. "I felt that this was an opportunity to allow the golfer to experience up close the uniqueness of the site, its natural amenities and spectacular views."
The variety of the setting from oak forest to open pasture to tidal salt marsh, provided an opportunity to vary the design elements and strategy of play.
Old South Golf Links is open to the public seven days a week. There is a clubhouse, restaurant and full-line pro shop on site.

Greens had a lot of bare spots and a significant fungus problem but that normal for Coures in and around Hilton Head .
Disappointing Experience at Old South Golf Club
I recently had the opportunity to play a round at Old South Golf Club with a group of friends, including one of my companions who is an amputee. Unfortunately, our experience was far from enjoyable, and I feel compelled to share my thoughts.
First and foremost, I was disheartened by the way the staff treated my amputee friend. Despite him being a local resident and an avid golfer, they seemed unwilling to accommodate his needs. Not only were they unsympathetic, but they went so far as to restrict his access to the tee boxes and greens. It was disconcerting to see staff members assigned to watch his every move, as if he posed a threat or inconvenience. Such treatment was both unnecessary and hurtful.
Adding to our frustration, the condition of the greens was simply abysmal. They appeared neglected and poorly maintained, making our golfing experience far from enjoyable. It was evident that the greens had not received the care and attention they required, which resulted in a significant impact on gameplay.
As someone who appreciates the game of golf and the camaraderie it brings, it was disheartening to encounter such issues at Old South Golf Club. The discriminatory treatment towards my amputee friend, coupled with the poor condition of the greens, overshadowed what should have been a pleasant day on the course.
Golf courses should strive to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for all patrons, regardless of their abilities. Unfortunately, Old South Golf Club fell short in this regard. I hope that the management takes these concerns seriously and works towards fostering a more accommodating and well-maintained facility.
In the future, I will be hesitant to recommend Old South Golf Club to others unless significant improvements are made in terms of staff training and course maintenance. Golfers, especially those with special needs, deserve better treatment and an environment where they can fully enjoy the game.
Please note that this review is based on my personal experience, and others may have different encounters at Old South Golf Club.
Nice resort style course but with 4 or five difficult carries.
Overall, the course was in fine condition, except the greens were punched and sanded. Most of the holes are resort playable but there are three or four that have very long carries over water and swamp land. Beautiful vistas throughout. The stafff and starter were very nice and professional.
Bought a wrap for lunch that was terrific.
We appreciate your thoughtful comments and the 4 stars. We hope to see you back for another round at Old South.
We appreciate the 5 star review...thank you.
Course is struggling
The layout is beautiful but the greens were terrible. Apparently they’re 35 years old which in my experience is in heard of in that type of climate.
Old South opened in 11/2019 but age is not the current issue with the greens. They are transitioning from winter rye to summer bermuda grass and required aerification earlier this month. They are recovering slower than normal but all will be well with the greens soon. Our Superintendent has 30 years experience with this issue which happens every June. Play in Fall, Winter or Spring for perfect greens.
Greens in rough shape. If greens are corrected this is a 4+ star course.
Beautiful Course
This is a historically beautiful course that is unfortunately going through some challenges with its greens.
HIGHS:
- Incredible scenery of the marshland between Hilton Head Island and Bluffton
- Unique holes that will fool you with their layout
- Staff is always top notch
LOWS:
- Unfortunately I can't give the greens very high marks at this time (June 2023) as almost all of them have significant damage
- Tee boxes aren't much better, but not a big deal since they are tee boxes.
Despite the greens, this is still a one of a kind track to play. Don't miss out!!
Thanks for the 4 stars and your understanding that greens are in transition from winter to summer grass. All should be back to normal in the next few weeks.
We appreciate your thoughtful comments and the 4 stars. Our great staff does their best to make every visit an enjoyable one. Greens are not "damaged". They are transitioning from winter rye grass to summer bermuda and were recently aerified to help with this process. It happens every year in June but recovery has been slower than normal. All will be well soon so we hope to see you back for another round.
Greens need help
The course was in good shape but the greens were not.
Due to our geographical location, greens transition at this time of year from winter rye to summer bermuda which requires aerification in June and August. Several greens are still in the process of recuperating but no one can hurry Mother Nature. Try us in late summer, fall, winter or spring for perfect greens.
Disappointed
Booked for myself and two family members online. Wasn't informed online or at the course of the deplorable conditions of the greens. Disappointed.

Ok
Was disappointed in the recovery of the greens from aeration 3 weeks ago. Price should have been discounted for the conditions. The rest of the course in good shape. Interesting layout with a few layup holes.
Unfortunately we can't hurry Mother Nature. Rates were reduce from our normal $92/person plus tax. If you paid $92/person our Head Professional will gladly give you a partial refund. Reach out to him at 843-785-5353.
Nice Layout but terrible greens
Yearly trip to HH island usually play Old South during the trip WOW what a difference a yr makes. The greens are as bad as I have seen them in yrs. Almost all have some sort of burnout or complete bald patches after an attempt at punch the greens they have not come back yet. Sad to see cause the course is a great low country golf course design that has a bunch of great holes but the bad greens kind of put a damper on the day. The staff and everyone in the clubhouse were very nice and friendly
We weren’t told the greens had been too dressed and not worth the price because of this. Normally a good course to play but not right now.
Greens are always aerified in early June and will be top dressed as determined by maintenance. Our normal green fee of $92 plus tax was reduced because of this. Playing in the fall, winter or spring avoids this issue.
Beautiful Course Tough But Fun Layout
Love the visuals presented by the course. Some rough spots on several greens but overall in great shape. As a shorter hitting 64 year old I found the numerous shots over marshes to be very challenging but my two longer hitting sons handled the course pretty well. Third time we have played the course and look forward to returning next year year during our annual vacation to the Hilton Head area.
Thanks for the 5 stars and your positive comments. We are glad you and your sons enjoyed your day at Old South and have us on your list to play again.
Highly recommend this course
Great course to play when you visit Hilton Head South Carolina. Very friendly staff and well maintained.
We appreciate your 4 star review and the mention of our great staff. We hope to see you at Old South again.
Great layout
Fairways were very good most tee boxes were ok but majority of greens were terrible.
Greens and tees are always aerified in June. The recent rain and warmer weather will aid in a faster recovery so try us in another week or so.
Poor greens
Every time I’m in Bluffton which is 3-4 times a year I play old south
My son took me there for Father’s Day we payed $190 for the two of us and I have to say I’ve never seen the greens in as bad a shape the rest of the course was great but greens where bad
No reduction in green fees but just let down by the poor greens
Aerification is necessary and is always done in early June. Greens are recuperating more slowly than usual but will be back to normal with the current rain and warm weather. We appreciate your repeat business.

Thanks for the 4 stars. Greens do not have a fungus...they are transitioning from winter rye to summer bermuda grass. They will all be filled in soon.
