Dolphin Head Golf Course
About
The Dolphin Head Golf Club, originally designed by Gary Player and Ron Kirby and built in 1974, was the first golf course developed at Hilton Head Plantation.
A trademark of Dolphin Head is the slight elevation of the greens from the approach-shot area and the numerous mounds, which accentuate the greens.
Under the direction of renowned golf course architect Clyde Johnston, Dolphin Head Golf Club's greens were rebuilt in 1993. Most recently, all bunkers were completely rebuilt, and four new fairway bunkers were added in strategic locations. A major tree-thinning program has been under way in the last few years to allow more sunshine to reach tees and greens.
The front nine starts and finishes with par 5s, and No. 18 is also a par 5.

Would Play Again
One of the better courses I have played while visiting Hilton Head Island. I would definitely play there again. The course received seven inches of rain 48 hours prior, but was still in nice shape.
Decent course, rude staff
Golfed here on vacation with a foursome (father, father inlaw and brother inlaw) that had one beginner golfer. Halfway through the front 9 we let a 3some pass. Was informed by the 'field marshall' that we were playing too slow even though there wasn't a group waiting behind us. We were told the 3some ahead of us was already on the green ahead of us and we reminded him that they had one less golfer than us. We finished on pace at 2hrs on the front but were told we were 4 minutes slow, which made us all look at each other like what the heck? We started the back and were ball hawked by the same field marshall for the remainder of our round even though there wasn't anyone on our backs to the point where we wished he would say just one more thing. We finished at 4hrs 3min. We felt pushed, angry, and took the relaxation out of our round of golf. I would not recommend this course and will not be back.
MANY INTERESTING HOLES
Lots of pretty holes and some forced carries over water. Fairways were thick and there was some high rough. Course played long as not much roll. Overall in great condition.
Dolphin Head
Very nice course. Friendly staff
Excellent Layout
A great layout. Bunkers were in play off the tee and you have to keep it in the fairway to score. Will play again.
Hot deal was well worth it.
Really good course. Great deal using the hot deal. Was very wet and rainy so we had the course to ourselves. I'd come back and play again. Really liked the layout of the track.
Fun Course
My son and I played Dolphin for the first time. it is a fun course - challenging but not crazy. Course was mostly in great condition - except greens which had just been aerated 6 - 8 days ago. So they were bumpy but very playable.
dolphin head
Arified greens! Bunkers in horrible shape. Staff never mentioned it.
A real gem!
Greens had been punched but that's ok. Something they gotta do...
The course is really pretty, but look out....it has teeth. Lots of dogleg par 4s. Course is challenging but fair. Bunkers need a bunch of work , but given the volume of rain lately, that's understandable.
Good course... a must play.... really nice people....
Don't miss this one....but bring your A game..
Very bumpy greens
the green were extremely "bumpy". Impossible to roll a smooth put.
good undulating greens
Nice layout which is not too difficult. Green are hard and speedy. Had to warm up on mats that were worn out. I hate to hit off mats. No food cart. Starter was very rude. After our foursome played the front nine in exactly 2 hours he told us we played the front nine in 2 hours and 20 minutes and we had to pick up our ball and skip a hole to catch up to three threescore in front of us. We had not seen the three some in back of us in 6 holes. We played the course I'm 3 hours and 45 minutes. The starter could not tell time and was rude. Course is good for the money but I will never play there again
HILTON HEAD VACATION
PLAYED MAY 8 WITH A LOCAL GOLFER WHICH HELPED
DEFINITELY NOT THE BEST CONDITIONS COURSE WE PLAYED DURING THAT WEEK
BUT A VERY GOOD LAYOUT WITH A LOT OF DOGLEGS AND TOUGH GREENS (STAY BELOW THE HOLE)
SEEMS LIKE LAST YEAR CONDITIONS WERE NEAR PERFECT WHICH IS NOT THE CASE NOW SO RIGHT NOW I WOULD RECOMMEND WAITING FOR SOME DEALS TO PLAY
New course availability on HHI
Dolphin Head has just recently changed to semi-private status and is now available for visitors to HHI.
The Gary Player designed course was fun to play, offering challenging holes and attractive scenery. The greens were devilishly quick (especially on downhill, down grain putts). The greens were somewhat hard, making stopping approach shots a little difficult. Had to play short of the pins to get it close.
All in all, a course I would recommend and look forward to playing again in the future.
Enjoyable round
Course was enjoyable--pace of play was very good. Still waiting for grass to grow in in some spots, but greens were still puttable. Could have used a beverage cart. Only other negative was mats instead of grass on the practice tee. We'll go back
Good course
Layout of the course was good pace of play was slow. Teebox and greens we're not at the level of other courses on Hilton head.
Work and Money
Now that the course is open to the public and being run by the Brown group it is a wait and see if the course conditions improve. The greens need work, the fairways need work. The staff were only interested in taking your money. Nice course but needs taking care of. Too many great courses in the greater Hilton Head area to play...wouldn't worry about playing or not playing this one.
Nice course to play
Was very nice and beautiful course. Needs a beverage cart to come around. Never did see one.
Well worth the money!
I would definitely recommend this course since it was a very enjoyable course to play and the price was right, as well as, it is very conveniently located if you are staying on the island. The only drawback was the pace of play, even though we finished in less than 4 1/2 hours, it seemed we waited on every shot. I guess we are just used to playing a lot faster in the north!

Greens were hard, if you've not golfed all winter and you want to get out probably would think this is better then shoveling snow, but not a very plush GC.
