Dolphin Head Golf Course
About
The Dolphin Head Golf Club, originally designed by Gary Player and Ron Kirby and built in 1974, was the first golf course developed at Hilton Head Plantation.
A trademark of Dolphin Head is the slight elevation of the greens from the approach-shot area and the numerous mounds, which accentuate the greens.
Under the direction of renowned golf course architect Clyde Johnston, Dolphin Head Golf Club's greens were rebuilt in 1993. Most recently, all bunkers were completely rebuilt, and four new fairway bunkers were added in strategic locations. A major tree-thinning program has been under way in the last few years to allow more sunshine to reach tees and greens.
The front nine starts and finishes with par 5s, and No. 18 is also a par 5.

Boring Course
Not much to say about the course design. Nothing stood out but by the same token it was ok. Just would not draw me back. Worst was the pace of play. Every shot we had to wait and in the end we bailed on the last 3 holes due to frustration. No course Marshalls. We found one group two ahead were to blame. Many open holes in front of them but no Marshall to hustle them along
Great Playing This Course
Glad to see that this course has opened up for play. Been coming to HHI for a long time and seem to play the same courses all the time. It was nice to get out and play a new course. Play was slow only because it just opened for public play. The course was in great condition. The greens are FAST! Have fun playing this gem.
Great Course at a great price
Simply a solid course with a nice layout, fast greens and well maintained bunkers.
Fun interesting course
The course was beautiful with mature trees and excellent fairways. There were many doglegs and holes with water which made the course interesting but from the white tees the course was very manageable. I had a very enjoyable round and loved the course even though I played poorly. I will definitely play here again.
Enjoyable course
First time playing. Good condition and pace of play. Will come back.
Great course and value
The course had a great track and was very fun and challenging to play. There's also in very good condition
Nice layout/challenging course
Beautiful course, well maintained, challenging. Have to place your shots carefully.
Not busy.
Only minor concerns are levels of staffing- no starter when we were there and no one around to take our cart at the end of the round at 5:30pm
Great course
Very good course fun but challenging great layout. We will play again.
Please send us any golf specials
Thanks Nancy
Classic old-school HHI course
This is said to be the first course built in Hilton Head. I believe it. The design is very 60s. Mostly, it's flat with some elevated and strongly contoured greens. The greens themselves were in mostly nice shape. Fairways were thin in spots. It's still not the season in that area. Very nice folks there. I enjoyed my round a lot.
terrible customer service
Tee off was supposed to be 2:00, we were asked to delay our tee time so 2 tournament teams could play through. we said sure however when we approached the tee blocks we were told 4 MORE teams had to play through. We were delayed an hour and weren't able to complete our round due to darkness. When we came in the man who was supposed to be helping us with our bags started yelling at us for playing too slow and that he had had complaints from players, which was kind of strange because NO ONE was behind us. He then realized his error and instead of apologizing continued to be angry and extremely rude. no wonder the course is struggling. Will not be recommending Dolphin Head to anyone!
Great Round of Golf
The course was in great condition. Had a good mix of holes where I was shot-shaping and others where I could "Grip it and rip it". Holes 9 and 18 are stunning... Both are par 5s that challenge you to play around the water. If I had one complaint it's that the front 9 greens were faster than the back 9. That's a SMALL complaint in this otherwise wonderful round of golf. Highly recommended.
Dolphin Head is a Winner
Great Layout with close proximity to the Vacation areas of Hilton Head. Greens had been partially punched. but rolled true and were quick. Tight and tree lined throughout, this is an excellent test.
Some areas of Fairways just starting to fill in.
Enjoy a great day.
Dolpjin Head Golf Club
The course was purchased by Brown Golf on 10.1.2015 and started the process to allow the public to have an opportunity to play a very strategic bunkered with perfectly placed water to enjoy a gem. It was fifty degrees in February. The greens were perfect and rolled true. If you are in the South Carolina lower country area, please take the time to play this course. It is a hidden gem.
Excellent Experience
The course was great and the staff extremely welcoming!
Good Place to Play in HH
Played on a busy Sunday afternoon, with great rate from Golf Now. Course was crowded, but play moved along pretty well. A nice design, in good shape for the winter. Will play again on next visit.
Used to be a private course
Dolphin Head used to be a private course that is now available to the public to play. No tricks, no impossible waste land or water carries, but plenty of opportunities to get into trouble if you don't hit it straight. Pace of play was slow, but because of rain, the course was wet and 10 holes were cart path only. Will play again when we are in HH.
challenging golf no matter which tee box
A great course with bunkers and water placed, but with an accurate shot can avoid the hazards. Greens were in excellant shape for the time of year. Fairways and rough were typical for the time of year. I would recommend this course. The course plays a little long but that is part of the challenge to hit the ball solid and accuratly.
An Unexpected Treat!
Thoroughly enjoyable experience! Course condition was superior obviously well-cared for. Golf course design was both enjoyable and interesting with particular emphasis on the shaping of greens and green side bunkers. Would highly recommend to all.
Can't wait to return!
This was our first opportunity to play this course. I think it is one of THE BEST in this price range. We are looking forward to playing Dolphin Head again in the near future.
Excellent course
We played in early January on a cold day, but the round was still enjoyable.
Great layout - well worth the money.
I will definitely be going back.
