Dolphin Head Golf Course
About
The Dolphin Head Golf Club, originally designed by Gary Player and Ron Kirby and built in 1974, was the first golf course developed at Hilton Head Plantation.
A trademark of Dolphin Head is the slight elevation of the greens from the approach-shot area and the numerous mounds, which accentuate the greens.
Under the direction of renowned golf course architect Clyde Johnston, Dolphin Head Golf Club's greens were rebuilt in 1993. Most recently, all bunkers were completely rebuilt, and four new fairway bunkers were added in strategic locations. A major tree-thinning program has been under way in the last few years to allow more sunshine to reach tees and greens.
The front nine starts and finishes with par 5s, and No. 18 is also a par 5.

Great course, will be back
I was a little hesitant to book a round at dolphin head after reading some of the other reviews, but decided to go for it. I have high expectations when I decide to play a course and dolphin head did not disappoint, by far the best of all the Brown Golf properties in Hilton head area... Tees and fairways were in great shape and the greens were some of the best I've played in Hilton head this summer, only being beaten by Harbour Town and possibly Hilton Head National. This was my first time playing this course but it certainly won't be my last, even considering the hour drive it takes me to reach it.
Great experience
Visiting Hilton head with my wife and wanted to play golf without paying an arm and a leg. I booked this course on golfnow expecting a muni course experience, boy was I pleasantly surprised. The course was in great shape, the staff was friendly, the pace of play under four hours. An additional plus is that there are a lot of shade trees and a refreshing ocean breeze which made playing on an August afternoon in South Carolina pleasant.
The course was in cherry condition
I played 18 holes with VERY little wait time and finished in just over 3 hours.
The staff could not have been more helpful on friendly. Loved playing there !!
enjoyable
I played this course on 7/18 and found the staff friendly. The conditions were acceptable given the heat, the greens were true and the fairways and tees were well kept. I will play again and hope to score better knowing the layout better
Great course now available for play.
In 40 years of vacationing at HHI, I had never heard of this course. What a pleasant surprise!
Great time
One of the best courses I've played on HHI. Staff were great and price per round was excellent. Couple of stuffy members tried to pair up and we politely excused ourselves after first hole, after which our round was an all around great time. Course was in great shape, greens recently aerated, but rolled true and not too fast. Not many blemishes at all on course, weeds treated also. Bunkers were easily escaped and rough not forgiving for its thickness. Would recommend to all golfers and will play again on future trips to HHI.
Amazing course
I just couldnt find anything wrong with this course! So great! Greens were amazing and true! Course layout was the best i have seen! I only payed 14 dollars! It was so great!
good fun for all
multiple tees allow everyone to play and course was in good shape. nice layout and kid friendly.
If you like being lectured....
...then this is the place for you.
Starter lectured us about pace of play (2:00 per side) incessantly during pre-round talk. Ranger started hounding us around hole #6 and every other hole after that despite no one being behind us. Starter scolded us at the turn. Ranger kept telling us to pick up the pace throughout the back nine.
I'm on vacation. I'm from the Northeast. I don't like being lectured, scolded, or harassed by rangers and starters who have no clue how to manage pace of play on a course. THEY COMPLETED RUINED THE DAY!!
FYI -- We completed our round in 4:17.
I WILL NEVER PLAY HERE AGAIN AND I WILL NEVER RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE!
Nice, Challenging Course
The course was in good shape. Greens rolled nice and held pretty well. You do have to know where to hit the ball as there was some challenging areas. The staff was very friendly. The one downfall was the lack of water on the course on a very, hot day. Some coolers had water and some did not. Defnitely recommend.
First group off
Amazing greens and conditions all the way around. Good slope to greens makes it fun to putt. Made the turn in 2:04 and a hole ahead of the next group, the starter wanted more. Play it safe and you will score. The greens are fast and true.
Nice track
I was very happy with the course. Greens were a bit slow, but I'm used to super fast bent. Dwarf Bermuda is a very different animal. I would suggest playing from blues or tips to stretch it out a little.
Great Greens
I was very happy I visited this course while on vacation in Hilton Head. We played a few other similarly-priced courses in the area and Dolphin Head was in the best shape. The greens were very good. The starter warned us that many of the greens have severe back-to-front slopes and he sure was right! Stay below the hole if you don't want some very slippery putts.
I liked the layout - not too long, but enough variety and hazards to keep things interesting. Also, for being a residential course, the housing did not feel intrusive.
The driving range is matts only, which might be a deterrent to those who like to warm up before their rounds.
One of the best
Played Friday , was very warm about 96deg, we started about 1:15, no-one out there pace of play was sweet cause we were able to enjoy one of the best courses I have ever played, definitely the best I've seen at hhi, or anywhere for that matter, great layout, left and right, greens were perfect, I highly advise that you make this a must play, you will want more no matter what the temperature is or your score is, it is that awesome, could play it every day
Must Play!
Really enjoyed our round 2 weeks ago. They course was is very good shape. Fairway were clean and well kept. The greens we amazing. We didn't see a ball take a bad bounce all round!
The last 6 holes of the course were great. The 14th hole has a nice opening overlooking the Harbor River/Atlantic Ocean. 17 and 18 were fun holes to close out the round. Beware of the pin placement on 17, it can be tricky. The par 5 closing hole can definitely be reached in 2 with solid drive. Make sure you're short or past the large tree on the right side of the fairway to give yourself a shot at going for the green in two.
We will definitely play here again!
A great day on the course
Good course, with an interesting and challenging layout (but not punitive). Conditions were excellent when I played, the staff couldn't have been nicer, and the pace-of-play was good even though the course was full.
George Fazio, Palmetto Dunes
Pace of play was the worst I've seen this year. The Pro shop said, "What do you expect for a resort course?"
For $90+ I expect a ranger. Not following some guy with his ten year old daughter and he's playing two balls. From the fist hole and would not let a twosome with single digit HDCPS. play through.
Not to mention the nasty women on the beverage cart.
Never again.
Great course
Played the course at 1pm, 90 percent humidity and 93 degree temps and still loved it. Greens were near perfect fairways
( those the I saw) near perfect and all for $45 on Hilton Head.
great course
First time I played and gave it a try due to a hot deal. After playing I know I found a great bargain that day. Greens were in excellent condition, fast with challenging lay out. Staff was excellent
Great Course - Near perfect shape
This course was beautiful and in near perfect condition - tees, fairways and greens. Cannot wait to play again on my next trip to Hilton Head. We had a great day in spite of the heat. Staff was friendly too.
