San Marcos Golf Resort
About
The golf course at the San Marcos Golf Resort boasts an impressive list of past players that includes presidents and celebrities. The golf course is nestled on a property in downtown Chandler that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Although it has a desert landscape, the course is still lush with a canal that runs through it, a lake, and plush Bermuda grass greens, the former two creating water hazards that come into play on several holes. The San Marcos Golf Resort course is challenging with each hole having at least three bunkers. The two most difficult holes on the golf course are two lengthy par 4s, the fourth and the 10th.

Morning view down the Par-5 5th fairway. A strong drive, especially to the center-right fairway, sets you up to go for the green in two! Photo submitted by vmustang on 04/25/2021

Why San Marcos Golf Course...Why?
Why is it, that golf courses that charge upwards of $60 to play in conditions that make putting on shag carpeting, tee boxes that are more like sand boxes, bunkers that merely concrete pits and fairways that would make one believe that the mowers used for this course no longer work at all? The course itself has never been anything to write home about, but I've played in years past when it's at least "decent". Now, it's just an embarrassment and a huge rip off. If they charged players say, $20, it might pass as an option for people who don't mind what I would certainly call, "the worst conditions of any course I've played this summer"...no joke. Needless to say, I, nor the other gents I was playing with, will no longer keep this course in our rotation. There are dozens of courses that charge this amount, or there about, that are immesurably superior to this "golf course". I realize this course has history behind it, but that's about it. Maybe the best thing would be, is to just bulldoze the entire course, and start over. Or, just open it up as a giant dog park; that way, the owners of the course wouldn't have to do anything at all...it's already a dog track...just let the dogs out. For anyone thinking about playing this course, I would highly suggest you take your business else where. You'll save yourself the anguish of having to play the what has to be the worst conditions of any course in Phoenix. Why San Marcos...you used to be a decent place to play. Alas, I will never step foot on your course again. I just hope that others who read this review will not suffer the same consequences of being bamboozled out of $60. Think about the "dog park" ideal...it's got real promise.
A glimpse into the past
Built over 100 years ago, San Marcos gives you a glimpse into what the rich and famous were treated to in early Arizona. No sign of the desert, San Marcos is a well manicured full grass course with what appear to be century old trees. Course is well maintained, staff is very service oriented, rates are reasonable throughout the year, all in all a very enjoyable day of golf.
Best Golf Instructor!!
Steve is such a good golf instructor. He has helped me so much with my game. He takes his time, very patient with me and has a great sense of humor. I made a par on a hole practicing with him, that I never have before. Because he is teaching me to swing much better and explained the different clubs to me to use in different situations. Also practicing a lot at the green, he helped there too. I would highly recommend Steve to help you you with your game. He does an awesome job.

Would not come back.
Played a full 18 on a Sunday with a foursome. Had our round completed exactly at 4 hours. The whole time we played there was one marshall who stalked us the whole time. He would randomly appear, and would drive around on rocks and make noise in our back swing. All in all the marshall made it such an unenjoyable experience. We talked to a couple employees and apparently it’s a very common thing that the Marshall's are not the nicest here, and are like this with a lot of groups. The worst part about the whole thing, the group behind us was never waiting to tee off, so there was no reason to even stalk us.
The course was okay, when I checked in the main attendant was telling us that they water the course way too much. We had such a hard time hitting irons off the tee box, and even hitting out of the fairway. The grass was so soft, anytime we tried to chip we took massive chunks out of the fairway. The greens were so inconsistent, went back and forth between slow/fast. The pin placement was horrible, there was numerous times the green was 50 yards wide and the pin would be in the back right corner maybe a foot off of the fringe.
The layout of the course was very basic, they all had a common theme, the pa 3’s always had 2 bunkers one on each side, the par 4’s were usually a dog leg left/right, and the par 5’s were straight and far.
WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT PLAY THIS COURSE!!!
I think the one word that best describes the experience of playing this round of golf is, "despair". I've played this course a number of times in the summer months in years past, and this time around was by far the worst experience ever. Fairways and tee boxes were too thick with whatever grass they use, or was non-existent. The fairways were everything but "fair". The grass was a cross between what I think was Bermuda and crabgrass. The greens looked good, but putted slower than St. Andrews back when they used the sheep to "cut" the grass. If you're going to consider spending nearly $60 to play golf, there are dozens of courses that far exceed the conditions of this one. Realistically, this course should not command any more than a $25 green fee. Oh yes, and "driving range"...enough said. I only wish I had taken some pictures to upload, Those who spent the time reading this review would have been extremely amused...in a very non-amusing manner. Do yourselves a huge favor and steer very clear of this "course".
Jewel of Chandler AZ
As the metroplex continues to engulf the Phoenix burbs this course is a jewel in an oasis. Not fancy just a good course that is run and maintained well. So much to do so close to historic downtown Chandler, it was a great course choice as I was staying nearby! Be careful of the hidden water canals they can bite your ball on 4 holes. Enjoyed the simplistic diner and bar on property for the 19th hole at reasonable prices with great A/C to cool off and unwind.
OK Course
starter ignored me completely. I took care of my starting time and cart. I never felt important at all. The waitress in the bar wasn't much better.
Fun Local Course
Loved this course in the middle of downtown Chandler. A very forgiving course that was great fun for a Sunday round.
