San Marcos Golf Resort
About
The golf course at the San Marcos Golf Resort boasts an impressive list of past players that includes presidents and celebrities. The golf course is nestled on a property in downtown Chandler that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Although it has a desert landscape, the course is still lush with a canal that runs through it, a lake, and plush Bermuda grass greens, the former two creating water hazards that come into play on several holes. The San Marcos Golf Resort course is challenging with each hole having at least three bunkers. The two most difficult holes on the golf course are two lengthy par 4s, the fourth and the 10th.

Morning view down the Par-5 5th fairway. A strong drive, especially to the center-right fairway, sets you up to go for the green in two! Photo submitted by vmustang on 04/25/2021

Great Value
I enjoyed this course even though some areas were very wet from overseeding process. I don’t hit the ball very far & played from the red tees so it was challenging for me with the number of par 4s & 5s. I’m so used to playing desert courses this was a nice change with so much grass & all the trees. I played with my brother who is a long hitter. He played from the black tees, the farthest, & he also enjoyed the course. He found it to be long & challenging enough for him. It was super crowded but we still managed to play 18 holes in 4 hrs. I only gave 4 overall b/c of it being so wet & also you are only allowed to use your irons on the driving range. Neither of us had played in over 4 months so it sucked that we couldn’t practice our drivers or other woods.
Disappointing Experience
I have played this course once previously. However, I am not sure I will play it again after today… I am an avid golfer, approx 8 hcp for reference. Upon arrival today at the course we were notified that the course was cart path only due to the recent overseeding. I absolutely understand this. However, on hole #11 I hit an errant shot far right into the fairway for hole #10. I had the option to take the appropriate cart path to the left. This would have created a situation where I would have had to walk about 150 yards across the two fairways to get to my ball, then back to the cart. The waking wasn’t an issue, I was just trying to maintain a steady pace of play. Ultimately, this would have created a pace of play issue since the course was very busy today. Or, I could take the cart path on the right into oncoming cart traffic from hole #10 in order to maintain an appropriate pace of play. We chose to go right, still remaining on cart path only. Our shots continued down the right side until they reached the green. At the green, there was no place where the two cart paths connected. So, as a courtesy, I asked the marshal who was sitting there where he would prefer that we cross to the appropriate cart path. He responded that he would prefer that we drive back to the tee box and take the appropriate cart path from there. It wasn’t necessarily what he said, but how he said it. He was very rude and disrespectful. One of the primary duties of a course marshal is to keep the pace of play moving on the course, he did not do that today. After taking approximately 7-8 minutes to drive all the way around (while passing the group behind us who was waiting for us to clear the green… and the group behind them who were dreaded to the #11 tee box), I still had to play my ball. I was not going to rush playing my ball due to being sent all the way around. The marshal ultimately unnecessarily slowed play approximately 10-12 minutes. He apparently felt that the pace of play for the patrons was less important than flexing his course authority. As far as course conditions, they were ok. But not good enough to deal with people like that. I know I should let this situation ruin my experience, but I did. Pretty disappointing round…
They are cart path only but it really wasn’t a slow round. Less then 4 hours.
The golf course looked and played great for overseeing a week and a half ago.
The staff is friendly. The food service is very slow.
Don't waste your money!!
Pace of play was ridiculously SLOW. Just out of overseed and CPO but c'mon... waiting 10 minutes a shot is soul crushing.
Overseed very spotty and a ton of dead grass on the incredibly SLOW greens.
Courses is not up to par! It will need 2 more weeks for the greens and fairways to get back to ideal playing! I
Golf course is not ready for good golf! It will need another 7-10 days to matured!
Fun course
Last day of play before over seeding. Fun course to play, staff is always friendly.
Just ok
For $40 it was just ok.
Had an 830 tee time and starter was kind enough to get us off early. Nice.
Course was fairly lush but all but unwatered. Greens ok.
The fellows that were paired with us were awesome.
Pace of play was 4:20. A bit slow for my liking but really only a brief pause between each shot.
Great Value and Great Staff
It looks like they are getting ready to overseed. The grass wasn't green, but it was still there and very playable. The grass was short everywhere, so it was easy to find errant shots. The greens were still pretty green...they were receptive and rolled well.
The pro shop staff and cart staff were, and always are, very friendly.
