Located in Little River, S.C., Eagle Nest opened in 1971 and was designed by Golf Course Architect Gene Hamm. The layout is laid out across 250 acres of gently rolling land, rare for a course near Myrtle Beach. The course has been upgraded recently and includes a set of "Perch" tee boxes that play over 8,100 yards, making it the state's longest golf course.

Super senior and player-friendly tee boxes up front have also been installed. This traditional low country layout features not only rolling undulations in it but mature Carolina pines, an abundance of wildlife and beautiful natural landscaping.

Poor conditions.

This was the first time I have played this course in three years. The nicest green was the practice green at the clubhouse and there was very little grass on the fairways. Perhaps the course will be better in a few weeks but right now it is not in very good condition.

Man's trip

We all really liked the round. Their were 4 of us from Indiana. Greens were great. They need to water the fairways a little more. Staff was very friendly. We enjoyed the layout.

Dead, dirt, bunkers

Fairways were dead, not a single green space in them while all other areas of grass around the course were green. (Including tee boxes).

When hitting from the fairway you were literally hitting directly off of dirt and dead vine style grass.. Chunk, chunk, chunk.

I did not see a single bunker that had been groomed. They were filled with sand that had recently been dumped into them and left that way.

No discount, no apologies. Just the old excuse of “well, it’s that time of year”.

Sorry, but the other 6 courses we played within 10 miles of Eagles Nest were in great shape. Roughs were dead but playing surfaces were great.

Shame on you Eagles Nest!

Todd,

Sorry conditions were not what you expected. Eagle Nest has bermuda fairways and rough which goes dormant in the winter months. The grass does appear to be dead. Eagle Nest usually overseeds the fairways for the green look but to limit Poa annua getting on the greens, we elected not to overseed this winter. Like any course, they must protect their greens. We try to price this time of year at discounted rates to reflect the conditions.

Grass

Need to overseed. Came down from Chicago and expected greener grass. Grass was browner than Chicago grass.

A Hidden Gem

This course is tucked away down a country lane about a mile inland from Highway 17 in Little River. Easy to reach from Myrtle Beach or Brunswick County. Friendly, helpful staff. The course is old-school, cut through undisturbed pine and cypress woods, with only a handful of holes having houses on one side. The course condition was very good for wintertime (fairways not overseeded) and the greens were medium speed and rolled true. The carts are GPS-equipped, which was very helpful to nail down distances. With multiple tee boxes, there is a distance for everyone, but stay away from the tips, which are for marketing purposes only. There is a reasonable amount of water in play, but nothing unfair. Beautiful natural scenery, including ducks and birds. This course feels far removed from the hustle and bustle of the Grand Strand.

Good layout; pretty poor conditions; not worth the money

Played on XMas day,. Paid $46 +. First time. Not. Bad layout with some interesting holes.

Absolutely pitiful conditions - most tee boxes, fairways, and greens. Most of the course looked like ground under repair. Driving range ($8) balls were well scuffed, some with no dimples. Restrooms looked like they have not been cleaned in a longtime.

Our pace was good, but there was a sixsome (three couples) playing behind us…imagine the pace behind them!

Most unfortunate because this course has the potential…

Honest review

Gotta say the layout is pretty nice. A fun course to play. The greens are decent but the fairways are cut VERY tight right now so it’s tight lies all around. Staff was great. 16 and 17 are truly beast holes. Im a 7 handicap and I will say the course plays pretty tough. Overall, the pace of play was a bit slow. 5 hours on a Wednesday. ?!?? I’d come back here but I’ll probably wait until things green up a bit in the Spring.
