Hidden gem in Myrtle Beach area
Willbrook Plantation Review, Pawleys Island area, SC. - played on May 19, 2020. Tees and fairways were in very good condition with very limited areas of sparse grass. Greens were very well grown in with moderate speed and some nice contour on many of them. Amount of fairway and green-side bunkering is average and well maintained considering absence of rakes due to coronavirus. Single cart ridership allowed without surcharge. Layout of course is above average with many holes tree-lined and good mix of straight and dogleg holes. Water comes into play on wayward shots on a half dozen holes. Senior tees playing just over 5,800 yards and enables most par-4’s and 5’s to be reached in regulation for average length player whereas the white tees are challenging at just under 6,300 yards. Clubhouse open with limited dining indoors but outdoors is an option and the pro shop well stocked with friendly staff, including the cart attendants. Practice green is modest in size and a small driving range is available.
Overall I would rank this course as above average for the greater Myrtle Beach area and a place that most golfers would want to return to a second time. If you make the correct club collection off the tees, avoid the odd lost ball (the trees are not defined as penalty areas) and make a couple of birdies, you should be able to improve on my 82.
On a final note, don’t forget to FIX YOUR DIVOTS!
Tree overgrowth hinders otherwise solid golf
Willbrook Plantation has always been well-regarded along the southern Grand Strand and for some reason, I've always been a little cooler on it than others seem to be. It does have one of the best, toughest opening holes in the area, but the rest of the golf course provides relatively few highs from that point forward.
The open holes on the back nine - 11 through 14 - are solid, but otherwise, the overgrowth of some otherwise lovely live oaks makes the corridors quite narrow and frustrating for higher handicaps. There is a lot of potential at Willbrook, though.
Trees In the way Everywhere
The golf course layout itself isn’t bad. But the 1st hole has a tree right in front of the green which affects all approach shots. There are tree limbs are in the way on multiple holes. Range balls were not included which is always a major negative in my book. The staff was very friendly. But another negative was there was no drink cart on a Sunday. It was sunny and 85 out this is a big mistake by the golf course. The range is very small. We had 9 players in our group and we filled the entire range. Also the holes had to be in the same place for multiple days because there was damage around several holes. There are better value courses in the founders club package.
Our favourite track in MB!!
I don't think there is a member of our group that doesn't like this golf course! Its on our itinerary every year. We love the overall feel of this course, the history surrounding you on multiple holes, and the natural beauty of the low country area.
This course condition has never been an issue with any of us. Yes the greens are different then we are used to but thats part of travelling and playing different courses.
Staff has always been friendly and treated us well, minus one old course marshal years ago that didn't like how/where we had parked our cart, and he took offence to that.
Our group really enjoys this course, and you know it will be apart of our trip again this fall!!
Nice Layout, Playable Course
I thought this golf course was very playable (wide fairways) and in good shape. Nice layout. The greens are the old Bermuda greens - a thicker blade of grass. The only down side were the greens. They were slow and bumpy.
Willbrook Plantation
Played here on a windy day after reserving the tee time through MBGOLF.COM. Paid $32 to reserve the tee time and we were to pay the remainder upon arrival at the course. Our group had been playing courses in the Founders Group Co. Each receipt had a $10 off the rate if we showed the receipt at the pro shop prior to play. HOWEVER, the wonderful gentleman at Willbrook's pro shop would not apply this discount due to "booking our tee time online" when we inquired into this, another upstanding gentleman rushed out of an office, puffed up his chest and basically told us tough luck.
The course was in OK shape, but I wouldn't pay more than $50-60 to play here folks. There are nicer courses in the area with much friendlier staff!
Our group has elected not to return to this course for the fact of the rude pro shop staff.
Myrtle Beach / Pawley's Gem - Must play
Great course. Not only was the staff great, but they got us on tee at our time exactly and had the groups moving along at a good pace.
The course design is interesting, with a lot of risk/reward holes and accuracy over distance being rewarded. Conditions were AMAZING considering it was February - especially considering other "premium" courses in the area were in such bad condition. These greens rolled true, and were healthy as late spring / early summer.
Certainly would recommend to golfers of all skill levels - this course is great.
Nice layout - enjoyable round
We play mostly as a twosome so often get paired up at busy courses. Meet a lot of new people this way, and golfers are generally a friendly type. That was the case today -- had an enjoyable round with a couple who traveled from Germany to play golf in Myrtle Beach. Course was busy and pace of play a bit slow, but diidn't seem so bad with new.friends to visit with.
Greeter/bagman and starter were very friendly, as was the cart lady.
Course was in good condition in spite of some rain the previous day, and some fall maintenance going on -- the crew was doing a great job not intruding on play. Like we've seen on other MB-area courses, there's not a lot of rollout on shots like we're used to up north -- and threre's no running shots up onto the green. So, choose your tee box wisely when you start your round, nd take an extra club to carry onto the greens.
Layout is very fair -- fairways are generous, but it's still important to hit it in the right spots to set up your next shot. No surprises (other than a few on green reads, perhaps!) -- it's all right there in front of you with no blind shots unless you get badly out of place.
Nice finishing par 3 and par 5 on numbers 17 & 18.
Great staff
Played for the first time. Pro was courteous enough to let me go out early to jump in front of a group of 28. Pace of play was so good I got in 27 in 4 1/2 hours. Course got a ton of rain night before. All things considered it held up well. Will play again.
Willbrook still a gem.
Played here in March and was very impressed so I thought I'd introduce my buddies to this place. They loved it. Got some heavy rain the night before so the fairways weren't rolling, but the greens they were a holdin'! Course is in great shape. They are gonna punch the greens next week though so beware.
Great Course for a Modest Price
I read excellent reviews of Willbrook Plantation before I played the neighborhood course, and the Pawleys Island track did not disappoint. Upon arrival the starter and bag drop attendant gave us clear directions of where to check in and how to proceed to the first tee. My one small complaint of the day (besides the weather, though that is out of the course's control) was our tee time at 8:17 A.M. was delayed till about 8:35 A.M. due to some slow play. However, once we teed off, we rarely had to wait on the group in front of us. The course was in excellent shape; thick, green rough, crisp fairways, true rolling greens, etc, it was all spectacular considering we paid less than $50.00 for the round. While some thunderstorms just after the turn did slow our round down, they did not hinder our group's overall enjoyment of Willbrook Plantation.
An Absolute Gem
Been wanting to check this one off my list for a while and I'm sorry I didn't do it sooner. It is now in my top 5 and will be bringing the fellas here when they come down. I played in the afternoon so it wasn't crowded at all. I've got nothing bad to say about this place. The course was in fantastic shape from tee to green. One of the most eye pleasing courses down here. Huge oaks with Spanish moss hanging, picturesque holes, and it's on a former plantation so there is some ( albeit not very good ) History here. There are plaques throughout the course detailing information about the place. I found it to be a challenging but fair course with some water hazards and well placed bunkers. The rough hadn't greened up yet so I guess if I was gonna get picky(and I'm not cause who cares about rough?) but every part of the fairways and greens was as green as St. Patty. The greens held all types of shots and rolled sweet. Get yourself down here to play this course. You won't be disappointed!
Great staff
Played here Thursday over my Litchfeild beach trip and wow! The staff was very friendly and accommodating and helpful from the time I checked in. The course was designed by Dan Maples in 1988. (Great course designer). The course isn't overly long but it's not exactly short. The course had a great restraunt which had more great staff.
The course itself was very nice with a good amount of water. The only thing I would complain about would be the bunkers that where a little wet. The rough was healthy and greens rolled true. I also appreciated the fact that they had a great range and practice facility. The trees on the course where buetiful and loved the whole scenery of the course. The course is a little expensive but would still reccomend the course.
This Southend Course doesn't stand out
I personally think this course is slightly overrated, don't get me wrong, it is definitely a nice place. However, nothing here really stands out or will blow you away. This is just a good place to get in a peaceful round of golf. When you compare it to many other South Strand courses in the area, it doesn't do much to make me want to go back. Just an average course in a beautiful area to golf.
A must play when in the area
Myself and one buddy played the course and found it to be just great. I had played it once before but didn't recall how great a course it really is. The fairways are wide and forgiving but there are plenty of trees, bunkers, water hazards and rough areas to challenge you throughout the course. The greens roll true and consistent throughout the round. The sand traps are in great shape. I cannot think of a single negative thing to comment about. I've played a lot of courses in the Pawley's Island, SC area and Willbrook Plantation is as good as any of them and there are several good ones in that area. HIGHLY RECOMMEND anyone coming to the area to put this course on your list of places to play at least one round. You will not be disappointed.
Great Experience and Challenging
We've been coming to this course for over 10 years as part of our Litchfield golf package. Our group of 8 always puts this on our list because the course conditions are the best. Compared to our experience at the much higher priced Caledonia this course was in better condition with the fairways and tee boxes dry (Caledonia was a mud pit) and allowing 90 degree carts even after considerable rain. The course is challenging from the whites and the wind made it even more so. The staff is very accommodating and professional. Very scenic layout in a gated community that obviously considers the upkeep of the course as a positive. We will be returning again next year,
Good value
We have played Willbrook several times in the past 8 years and it is always an enjoyable experience. The fairways are open for the most part and the greens are usually true. On this particular date, the greens were recovering from aeration, so that was a drawback, as well as being told it was cart path only after a severe rain storm the day before. As luck would have it, the ranger came out on the first hole and told us they had made it 90 degrees for the afternoon, so that was nice.
This is a beautiful course
Course is challenging and in excellent condition. We had novice players ahead of us, unreasonably slowing down play, and rangers moved them off the course.
5 hour round !!!!!
Marshall asked this 4some ahead of us to pick up the pace 3 times ... 5 hours ... Very disappointing in the pace of play ... Not recommended for the casual golfer .... Gorgeous course, scenery, great layout ... wildlife, history ... can't wait to play it againin the summer ...
