San Juan Oaks Golf Club
About
Northern California's San Juan Oaks Golf Club is located halfway between the Silicon Valley and Monterey Peninsula off Highway 101 near the historic town of San Juan Bautista in Hollister. Opened in 1996, the 18-hole golf course is Fred Couples' first signature design in California and features five sets of tees for varying skill levels. It's also home to "Club Boom Boom," a popular junior teaching program. On top of the golf course, San Juan Oaks is known especially for its elaborate facilities including banquet rooms and patios for group outings, as well as driving range and practice greens.

Fun and Challenging, Horrible Bunkers
This is a great course layout in a beautiful setting. First time playing. We set out at 7:40am with fog so thick and low we couldn't see our ball once hit for the first 3 holes. Once the fog burned off we were rewarded. Overall this course is in decent condition. I prefer a faster, truer green but the greens are in good shape. My biggest complaint is the bunkers. There is zero maintenance on any of them. ANY. Not even green side. There is no sand in them, they are soaked and packed like concrete. Full of weeds and grass, etc. They haven't seen a rake, maybe ever. Still worth playing epescially for $45 with cart. Not a great walking course unless you're in good shape.
Hoooot day! Hydrate Hydrate Hydrate!
Man it was a hot midday round, I did not finish because of the heat. I am thankful they let me play earlier but the sun was already at its peak. Course was in good condition. A couple greens looked sick hopefully they can fix them. I am very glad they mowed down a lot of the rough which used to be 2 feet high. If not this fire season could ruin this course. The wind was gusting in some spots in the front which makes it even tougher. Luckily I found a sleeve of new Pro v1s sitting on a path! Thanks whoever you are!
This course is good value.
The course is in very good condition considering water problems. Layout is challenging and aesthetically pleasing. Only complaint is sand traps need a lot of work. Otherwise very enjoyable to play and good value for the price. Windy in the afternoon so be prepared.
Great day!
Wonderful second visit. Fairway and greens in very, very good shape. Pace of play was great. The driving range was closed for the day, so we got off early which was a plus. When we finished, we decided to stay for lunch. Outstanding service and it was fun to see a ton of golf kids enjoying the place (which may have been why the driving range was closed - they used it). Great to see a club host so many youngsters. Course is a great value
Nice Course
The course was in good shape even in the middle of a hot summer. Greens were in good condition. Fairways (when we were in them) were in good shape. The staff is excellent. We’re coming back soon.
San Juan Oaks
A first class course in second class condition
Greens were hairy and slow
Course was not manicured very well
It was like a first class course that had no money for upkeep
Little too far to drive from Monterey for the money
It’s a nice Laguna Seca
traps in very poor condition
been playing of and on since it opened always in good condition but now all the traps have been neglected. just dirt with very little sand and plenty of weeds. they should advise all players and the ncga that they can take balls out of traps with no penalty.
bumpy greens
course was in decent shape but i've seen better. played here a month ago and it was in Great shape-greens rolled true and quick. This time the greens were bumpy and slow. seems like they didn't roll the greens or something. Fairways and tee boxes were fine although a few fairways were pretty wet.
Love this course
It was really windy so that wasn’t great (last 2 times I couldn’t wear a hat) but this is a fun challenging course. I will play combo tees next time to add to the difficulty. Greens slower than usual.
Good but windy
Nice course, lot of wild life roaming around, great views, really had a great time.
All great except the bunkers
One of my favorite courses and it has been for a long time. The layout and course design are great. Sand traps need A LOT of TLC. Managed to only hit into 1 but from what I saw they were more dirt than sand. You play them like hard pan and you’ll be okay.
Excellent round at SJO
I had a nice round playing with a friend. The course is in great shape and the conditions were great with a stiff afternoon breeze.
Good value
Great clubhouse. Beautiful setting. Fairways were excellent. Staff was friendly and helpful. Nice ice cold water stations.
On the negative side, the sand traps were more like dirt pits and the greens were slow and bumpy. Felt like they were skimping on maintenance.
Bottom line, a good value for the money on a beautiful and challenging course.
Needs Sand Renovation
The course is in very good shape with the exception of the bunkers. They are not very good condition right now. I was only in one but a play partner had to deal with 4 of them. Overall it was a great day...
Beautiful course
We had a wonderful time on a beautiful course!
Tee time was 230, got there early and the friendly staff let us go out an hour early.
Will be back in the future.
Beautiful Course
This remains one of my favorites in the area. Early morning golf rewards you with plenty of wildlife and lower winds. The course is well-kept with the exception of bunkers which are hard pan and lacking sand. Greens are usually nice but this last round putts seemed tbe Roll a bit bumpy. Overall this course is a good test of skill.
