San Juan Oaks Golf Club
About
Northern California's San Juan Oaks Golf Club is located halfway between the Silicon Valley and Monterey Peninsula off Highway 101 near the historic town of San Juan Bautista in Hollister. Opened in 1996, the 18-hole golf course is Fred Couples' first signature design in California and features five sets of tees for varying skill levels. It's also home to "Club Boom Boom," a popular junior teaching program. On top of the golf course, San Juan Oaks is known especially for its elaborate facilities including banquet rooms and patios for group outings, as well as driving range and practice greens.

No marshals.
Was having a good round until we caught a tournament on #8. Played the first 9 holes in 2hrs and 10minutes. The next 6 holes took us 2.5 hours to play. With 3 holes remaining, and an excruciating slow play with no marshals on the course to speed up the tournament in front of us, we just gave up and left the course. If you play here, remember to call ahead of your round to ask if there are any tournaments that day. Because they do not marshal the course. Very disappointed.
Perfect Conditions
Tees, fairways, and greens were in perfect shape. I agree with other reviewers that the traps need some work, but they weren’t unfair. The environment gives you a real back-to-nature experience with many deer, turkeys, frogs, ducks, and at least one big rattlesnake on the 15th hole. That snake was guarding my slightly errant shot and didnt want to move. I’m not sure of the proper ruling, but I decided to take a drop at a safe distance.
Course has great layout
Love playing here, it is a great course especially for the price. I would say the fairways are a 4.5 oit of 5 and greens are 4.8 out of 5. Back nine is challenging but fun. Great chipping and putting practice greens.
Slow
Staff allowed me to go off early on #1 which was great. However, by #10 got bogged down...on #13 I counted 5 (!) groups on the same hole and it took 30 mins to play this hole. No ranger to be found. I gave up and left. Some of the back 9 holes are too difficult for many players which is what I think slows it down. Course was generally in good shape, except for most bunkers with weeds and dirt (not sand). Probably won’t be back for a while.
Good Course
First time plating this course. I liked everything except the bunkers. Most of the bunkers were surrounded by weeds and the sand was wet and hard. We started early in the morning and the course was very wet (waterlogged) from watering overnight. Overall it was a greta course.
Great greens and fairways
Played on a very hot breezy day, but course was in very good shape. Only issue is that sand traps need some work - very low on sand in most of them. Overall a greatplace to play!
The course is very challenging
Course is in good shape. Fairways are in good shape. Greens were a little bumpy. Sand traps need some work.
Fun course
I played in a twosome with my wife who has played professionally. We loved the course except for two things. First, the pace of play was very slow - around 4:45. Also, as noted in other reviews, the bunkers were hard and didn't have much sand. The fairways and teeing grounds were as good as it gets, and the greens far above average. Good layout - hard but very fair. Great value - I assume the slow play was because it was Memorial Day.
Great course
I have played course several times. I always enjoy it. I love the layout. Greens were I'm great shape other then being kinda slow. I do hope the course improves condition of fairway/greenside bunkers
Great layout, difficult but enjoyable course
We arrived 1/2 hour before our tee time, but it was not busy so went out immediately. The course is in excellent condition, the greens rolled true, but are a bit slow right now, but I assume that is because they are in the final stage of recovery from aeration. It was cool and windy, but cannot blame that on the course.
Our twosome finished the front nine in an hour and one half, but caught up with some slowpokes that made the back nine a bit tedious. 2-1/2 hours of a lot of waiting for two foursomes in front of us who searched for balls on nearly every hole. We still had an enjoyable time and I will definitely return again when I get a good deal.
Fantastic Day Golfing for Mother’s Day
The staff was friendly and attentive. The course was beautifully maintained with the exception of the bunkers...they were not cleanly cut and the sand was more like hardpan. The views were spectacular and the wildlife made for great picture taking. A definite must for any golfer!
Course is beautiful this spring
Fairways are in great shape- lush and cushy. Greens are nice as well. Played early in twosome in just over three hours. Staff is friendly and helpful.
Good layout
No back and forth holes. All are a challenge. Course was in great shape and several holes are a great test of shot making
Beautiful course
Great course. Feels like a private club. Worth the extra drive time. Highly recommend.
130 slope from the whites
Tough course, plays long and thick rough. Bunkers are hard with a thin layer of sand. Gets windy in the afternoon. Beware of snakes. Other than that, the course is challenging and I had fun.
SJO
This is a beautiful course and the only issue that I have with it is the sand traps are terrible they are mostly mud
