San Juan Oaks Golf Club
About
Northern California's San Juan Oaks Golf Club is located halfway between the Silicon Valley and Monterey Peninsula off Highway 101 near the historic town of San Juan Bautista in Hollister. Opened in 1996, the 18-hole golf course is Fred Couples' first signature design in California and features five sets of tees for varying skill levels. It's also home to "Club Boom Boom," a popular junior teaching program. On top of the golf course, San Juan Oaks is known especially for its elaborate facilities including banquet rooms and patios for group outings, as well as driving range and practice greens.

Great Layout with Excellent Customer service
This is a great course all around (sans the traps). First I'll talk about the layout. The front 9 is on flat ground and offers several scoring opportunities. Don't confuse flat and scoring with boring. Water borders the left side of the green on the par 5 Ninth making it risky to go for the green in 2 (but oh so sweet if you do and pull it off). In addition both Par 3's on the front play with your mind with water on the 8th hole and a narrow opening followed by an open meadow before the green on the 6th hole. Both play into the wind adding to the challenge.
After coming off the front 9 thinking your going to break your PR.... you head to the hills!!
Holes 12-18 are perched in the mountain. They offer some great views and plenty of challenge. 13-15 have gully's to cross, split fairways and play Loooong. Add in the wind and you'll be pleased to walk away with a bogey at any of these holes. Even the short Par 3 16th has a gully to carry. 17-18 play down hill but into the wind. When you get finished with your 18 you'll probably say "what a fun but tough course".
Now for the basics, Greens are the perfect challenge. Smooth, relatively fast and have a touch of undulation but not too much (a la Blackhorse/Bayonet). Fairways are lush and relatively divot free.
Outside of the fairway you enter brush land so finding your ball is a rarity. Also the backside has tons of Poison Oak so beware entering the brush. The main setback for San Juan Oaks is the poor quality sand traps. Most are hard dirt at best. Also the wind kicks up here so get out early and even that isn't a guarantee that you wont battle it.
Customer service is top notch and super accommodating.
This course gets packed on the weekends so my rating for pace of play is based on early weekday morning tee times.
Another fun fact is the wild turkeys on the course. Usually around 40+ roaming around one of the holes.
bunkers??
Sand traps (bunkers) need attention. Course is otherwise in great shape. Fairways are lush and the greens are running at about 9-10 on the stimp with fairly easy pin placements.
Didn't play that well because of the wind and slow pace, but still had a great time.
Frost delay
Had a 7:40 tee time but didn't start till 10 because of a frost delay. Would have been nice to get a phone call since the decision not to let anyone play till 10 was made before 7. Course is beautiful and very challenging. My only issue is with the bunkers. A course that is otherwise flawless should have adequate bunkers. The bunkers on this course ate subpar
Freezedelay
Only got to play eight holes due to a frost delay during my tee time. Not happy that I paid and not able to play a full round.
Great Layout and Staff
Pro Shop staff super accommodating and the starter, Andrew, was super friendly.
Great day at San Juan Oaks
Course was in great shape, greens very nice, ran well! Fairways we're soft but playing from regular tees accommodated for lack of roll. Staff were terrific, makes it one of our favorite courses.
San Juan Oaks
I have played SJO many times and each time I play I continually find the course to be too wet. My ball plugs in the fairway and the greens are wet and slow. I have mentioned these conditions to the maintenance crew as well as the folks at the front desk. May be a word from you would help in making this course a little dryer.
San Juan
It was good beautiful day .greens played slow and wet. group in front played a little slow
San Juan Oaks
Friendly staff
Fairways in excellent condition
Greens were being worked on but in great shape
Excellent weather
conditions of SJO golf course
I'm a local and have played San Juan Oaks many many times. i really enjoy playing this course. My complaint is the course is too wet. You hit a drive on the fairway and it plugs due to the extremely wet conditions. the same is true for the greens. I hit a great shot on the green and it hits and rolled maybe 2". Stop watering so much!!!
