Atrocious condition
This course is in absolute disrepair, a complete rip-off paying over 75$ for the round. If this course was 40$ it would be fine. But for 75$ and all the fairways are a mess, half the greens are being air raided, and the even the tee boxes were in awful condition. NEVER pay that much for this course. Staff is super nice except the high school age kids in golf carts that speed around not acknowledging anyone.
Not a hundred dollar worth course
Course condition not good considering the amount of the cart path only holes they have. I would not play unless it a hot deal.
Need to improve course care
They're just not taking care of this course like they should. Too many areas on fairways/greens w/ little to no grass
Better than I expected, still not worth $70.
I took my son, who's a beginner, out for an afternoon round. I've lived in Irvine for 30 years and haven't played this course in 10 years because I keep hearing how bad the conditions are. I figured since my son is a beginner, the open layout would be a good course to play. Overall, I was surprised that the course's condition wasn't horrible. The greens were decent, but nobody fixes ball marks. The staff was friendly. Not worth $70, but worth about $45-50. Would return with a beginner.
Could be better
Have played 4 rounds so far, each time I can't find an open spot at the range to warm up so I have to warm up on the course which impacts my game. Should take two spots and reserve them for people who are going to play their round. Last time I went to another course and warmed up there and then came to play here.
I know it's difficult but a better effort in keeping the goose droppings cleaner is really needed, it's everywhere!
Won’t come back, but it’s mostly not your fault
Greeters/pro shop were top notch, starter was super friendly, course was in terrible condition, and the patrons were super disrespectful to the course. I must’ve repaired 30 ball marks that weren’t from my group, and 70% of the fairways were like rocks. Just made it a long day.
Too Expensive For What It Is
The course is fun and the layout is just fine. Greens were in good condition and can be challenging, but the fairways are really not what you'd expect for a $100 round of golf. Bone dry and weeds in certain areas. Not fun to hit a perfect drive and still find yourself in a bad lie.
Overall, you will have a nice time here, but the price is frankly a bit ridiculous when for 20 more bucks you can play on pristine courses nearby, or for 50 less you can play on comparable and even better fairways in Costa Mesa.
Have you ever played golf in the mouth of the Nile River?
Well, we teed off at a few minutes after 7am. We were paired with 2 singles, both of which should be playing pro LOL. We did our best to keep up, as we were a 2 some. I just skipped holes and shots to keep up, and that plain in annoying. Then came the water... I sloshed around on at least first 6-8 holes... they over water to the point that I felt like I was playing in the mouth of a river, an inch or more of water, wherever I went. Mud on show, of course :) Mud on clothes, bonus! Then came the flies - with water and heat = bugs and where there's food there's Geese hundreds of them - they were EVERYWHERE - cart paths, no, Geese grazing everywhere :) AND when an animal eats -- after digestion... there's ? GEESE excrement - everywhere - on every hole on the front 9 at least. So, let's recap, Nile River Delta, Flies and Geese + excrement. It was like being on the 5th level of Hades. We persevered... and made it back from the 5th level and are ready for our next adventure. ( this was a truthful account - and yes, it's sarcastic - it's also supposed to be commical - in case you are millenial or Gen Z - don't get all butt hurt it's not about you )
Free Range Geese
This a a great course with plenty of ground to cover. Greens proved to be challenging with multiple elevation changes, unfortunately the practice of repairing divots isn’t native to the area. Eight holes include water hazards which not only attract golf balls but also flocks of geese. Much like their human counterparts in regards to cleaning up the mess made on the greens, the fowlness of these univited guest is littered throughout the course. So watch your step and wipe clubs with caution as you may be in for a surprise. Outside of that, the overall layout is well situated and very forgiving for a beginner golfer like myself who plays a ball or two off the adjacent fairway. I didn’t quite achieve the score was aiming for so I will definitely be giving this course another try.
Avoid at all costs
I was excited to play at this course for the first time after having frequented the range and restaurant here. I have played nearly every course in the OC, and Rancho takes the cake for worst experience of them all. I have never left a review for a golf course before this one. I arrived 30 minutes early with the intention to grab some drinks for the cart since it was an especially hot day. I walked up to the bar inside and was ignored by the long haired male bartender for a good 5 minutes before I spoke up and asked if I could order a drink. He rudely says “yes” then turns away and proceeds to ignore me, help two whole other parties that came in after me, and then disappears in the back. At this point it is time to check in so I just leave for the pro shop. We get paired up with an elderly couple that needed a few more shots than your average golfer to clear the fairway, which was fine with me and my partner as we were just there to have a good time, soak up the beautiful day, and play 18. What wasn’t fine, however, was the influx of balls landing by my feet due to the group behind us disregarding basic etiquette and hitting into our group. This is when I find out that my player partner is deaf and relies on reading lips. I watched in horror while putting as two balls nearly hit him as the group behind us is raucously driving the green from the tee box. We are all there to have fun and enjoy a round of golf, there is no need to be rude and endanger everyone on the course. My playing partner accidentally picked up a ball from the group behind us, because he is elderly and it was mixed in next to our balls, and the group behind us DROVE UP TO US SCREAMING PROFANITIES and other unsavory remarks, when they should not have hit their balls into where we were standing in the first place. We ended up letting at least three groups behind us play through, and stopped to grab food at the turn, where my friend and I were ignored once again by the long haired male bartender. On top of the rude patrons and inhospitable waitstaff, the condition of the course was diabolical for the price. On a scorching 90 degree day in the middle of summer please tell me why we were sinking in muddy puddles that seemed to be completely unavoidable and would splash onto our legs and clothes. The flooded conditions made the course smell horrible and rank, and surely was unhygienic. We have not had rain in months and are in the middle of a heat wave, so I know this was due to poor course maintenance. Also, it is common to forget a wedge or putter or headcover near the green. During our round my friend and I found 2 wedges and a headcover and successfully traced down their owner and returned it to them. After returning home, I noticed that I was missing one of my new wedges. Upon calling the pro shop a few days later, no one had turned it in. This is the first time at any course I have played where my friends and I have not been returned a lost item. I am not surprised that my wedge was stolen due to the evidently low class people that appear to frequent this course. The sweet elderly couple we played with did their best to speed up on their end, even sitting out some of the longer holes in order to keep up with pace of play. There no reason we should have been harassed by the other patrons. You double digit handicappers will never be on tour, it is literally not that serious. Avoid this course at all costs, you are better off taking $80 and setting it on fire.
