Normally the price is a good value. However the course was in awful condition and was charged full price. Although there had been no rain recently, there was mud on nearly every hole. Including tire tracks across the fairway that dug up the mud. If a tee box was relocated temporally for ground under repair, the temporary tee box was placed into the rough, and not cut to a lower height. So a driver tee height looked like a wood tee height. A few sand traps had grass growing in them. And several of the greens were patched up in some way. Enough to take relief because the manner in which they were patched up were going to cause the putt to go offline. If a course is going to be under this many repairs and in this state, the pricing should reflect it.
Fun track, needs work
RSJ has always struggled with conditions but it is awful right now. Too many dirt spots on the fairway, horrible tee boxes and average at best greens. With these conditions and still several path-only holes. It's a fun course but plays like a $20 muni not an $85 course.
Nice Greens
The course condition itself was not that good, but the greens were excellent, which made it enjoyable. It looks like they’re trying to do some work around the course. Hopefully things will improve in the future a nice round of golf from someone coming from Minnesota.
Awful conditions, bad carts, average layout, slow play
It is impossible and frustrating to see even a 3 or 4 star let alone 5 star review for this dog track. No golfer who plays even 3 times a year could honestly say this is a worthwhile golf course, unless they were paid for their review. IF it was in great shape it would be an average uninspired layout. BUT... It is not even in OK shape...every aspect of the course is bad. Greens are patchy with burned spots and different weed grasses, couple that with rounded holes lead to bumpy and unpredictable putting. Bunkers are hard packed with sparse coarsely grained sand and standing water. Fringes have bare spots AND untrimmed kikuyu grass in spots. The weedy fairways are patched with dry bare spots AND wet standing water areas. Couple that with old broken down carts and a combo of uncaring or even rude clubhouse workers and you have a 1 star experience at best. It doesn't matter if the putting green is nice or that they have ok sandwiches...it is not a restaurant or picture venue...it's a golf course, and a really poorly maintained one at that.
Get a new course management company
The fairways were a disaster! Some were wet like a swamp, some were dry like August, the greens were quick and there was no previous notice given that 4 holes were cart path only! What a joke- and it wasn’t funny! The people who worked there are very cordial!
Dog Track
Avoid unless you enjoy 5 hour rounds, horrible tee boxes, weeds and geese droppings everywhere. Make sure to clean your cleats thoroughly after your round. One positive is the food at the on-site restaurant, but that’s about it.
Price isn’t even worth half.
It’s a fun course and layout. But conditions are absolutely horrendous. The price is so hard to comprehend. $70 is not worth it at all. Riverview is equally as bad as far as conditions go, and charges $40. Changes need to be made immediately in order for the course to reflect the price.
Poor pace of play, bad course conditions
Course is so wet here and there due to overwatering, and fairway and greenside conditions is so poor. Not recommended.
Not worth $100
This course is ridiculous with its prices. This course is $60 at most to play. The only reason they charge this is because new golfers will pay it, not knowing any better. Save your money; there are better courses out there that do not charge anywhere near this price gouging course. Total joke.
Need maintenance
Value, staff and ProShop are great, 5 star! However, the condition of the course needs improvements, 1 star!
Tee box area is bad, fairways and grounds need serious maintenance.
Help
Course maintenance leaves a lot to be desired, tee boxes are terrible and the fairways are neglected including the drainage issues.
Terrible conditions.
Super greedy of this course to charge 101 dollars to play here. My friends and I were absolutely miserable the entire round. Basically step out of the cart into Mud like we were playing on a swap almost everywhere. On top of the poor conditions, the greens were punched and had sand In them
101 is the full price to pay there. Should have been a huge discount to play. I played black gold two weeks ago and then only charged 81 to play there cause the greens were punched. Very disappointing round.
Good But Not Great
This course has so much potential and offers a very convenient and fun round of golf but the course conditions need work. We haven’t had rain in California in over four months (in fact this summer has been unusually hot) but the course was very muddy and soggy in so many places that I found it unacceptable. There is clearly an issue with irrigation which could explain the heaps of sand on the greens making the approach, as well as putting, very difficult and unpredictable. A few of the holes had the tee boxes bunched together in one spot, not good. I found their mixed cocktails to be very poor quality and lacking good taste; using cheap mixers that are just flat out bad does not work (anymore). As a local OC resident for over 30 years that has played here before many times, I hope they improve this place.
Not Ready for Prime Time
I got a letter from the Rancho GM about course improvements. I should have paid closer attention. The greens were just punched, they just started their irrigation (their irrigation has always been horrible - most areas are muddy or too dry) and fairway improvement projects. Sand was good but they plan to make it better. The 18th hole fairway was basically low rough. I would not go until early next summer.
On the bright side, they have a nice new restaurant and bar, and their range is awesome - but overpriced and crowded.
