The newly renovated Claw at USF, named thus for its many doglegged fairways, offers a distinct layout that seamlessly winds through moss draped oaks and towering pines on pristine Florida preservation land. You will enjoy the fact that there are no houses crowding the fairways. Located at the University of South Florida, this manicured course is home to alligators, deer, turkeys and many other rare inhabitants. You will feel like you are playing in the heart of a nature preserve. "The Claw" is also home to the nationally ranked men's and women's USF Golf Teams. Elevated greens and new Tif-Dwarf putting surface, will test your finesse and shot making ability.

It has potential
The Claw ….. this course is a great, and sometimes tight routing. But it needs a few things. First, the multi-million dollar athletic program needs to build a new, top-level clubhouse complete with restaurant and new cart-barn. And the range needs to be expanded and be double-ended (there is enough room to do this). The end close to the clubhouse can be for day-play with the top end for the golf team. It looks like they have neglected 10yrs of tree maintenance, so that needs to be taken care of. They also need new sand in all of the bunkers. They could add about 200yds to the tips and create another set of tees at about 6600yds for mid-am level players. There is space. For one of the biggest universities in Florida, they deserve more money to be put into the course. The staff was great and are working in difficult conditions. If this place were revamped it could be an amazing track.
The Claw
Aside from the unhelpful, lazy blonde kid in the “pro-trailer”, it’s not a bad place. I actually left but decided to return and play. Thankfully another staff member took great care of me and I proceeded to have a decent round. A tad rough around the edges but overall not bad if you can get a deal. Just don’t let the T-shirts and flip flops get in your way.
Fabulous Greens
For the money (about $40), this is a great course. The greens are in fantastic shape. The rest of the course not so much, but it was playable.. I’d come come back again
No maintenance
Such a wonderful golf course, it's been left to go to seed. As much as USF spent on the practice building, they have left the burned clubhouse/snack bar to rot. I'm wondering if they didn't keep up with the insurance payments. We have a world class golf team, and a course to be ashamed of.
Greens are solid…the rest, not so much
Greens: very good shape but slow
Fairways: equivalent of playing in a cow pasture cut really short. Also….cutting a few trees back would help the cause.
Tee box: probably the worse I’ve played
The course is a very challenging layout, greens were good but you tee off in sand mixed with patches of grass and constantly deal with overgrown tree limbs.
Good experience
This was a very fun course to play. Laid back atmosphere and good Nature. The fairways and Greens were in good shape. Affordable and you will get your bang for your buck.
Recommend this golf course
Tee Box need seeding and some of the fairways, the green
Are very good .
Tough course
Tough course. Glad they got gas carts, the old ones were bad.
Poor Conditions + No Clubhouse
Course was in the worst condition I’ve ever seen…fairways and greens need attention. The clubhouse looks abandoned there is no service and renovations look to be on hold.
Rough around the edges
First if all, don't expect many amenities. No clubhouse, check-in is a metal crate with just enough room for a small desk and a counter with golf balls and snacks for sale. Iron range is available and is a short drive up the left side of 1st hole. Range balls are purchased at metal crate when checking in. Restrooms are air conditioned but portable and just a step up from an outhouse. No on course beverage cart, at least not on the day I played.
Greens are the best part of the course. Speed probably would have been 9-10 if they had been cut (on a Sun morning). They still rolled out and rolled true. Future problem I foresee is small sprigs of crabgrass are starting to infiltrate the greens. If they aren't tended to they'll be a huge problem within the next several weeks. Fringes and bunkers were in nice shape but grass around greens was very sparse. I gave a '3' on overall course conditions solely because of the greens.
Fairways aren't bad but it makes sense to play preferred lies. Most tee boxes were sandy with very little grass. Not sure when tees were last moved. We found ourselves teeing off from anywhere we could find grass.
Layout is nice. Greens are mostly elevated. I've always felt that if can score here, you can play just any course well
Going Down Hill
The University is letting this course deteriorate into terrible shape. The clubhouse has been closed for years and now the cart barn has been condemned. Trees are dying, sparse grass on fairways, and no course improvements are being made. Pace of play is slow, no course marshals to hurry slow players along.
Been playing course for 40 years and best condition that I can recallL Check in attendaqnt was most courteous ever;
Had gread time with my grandsoon and just a perfect dqay
