The newly renovated Claw at USF, named thus for its many doglegged fairways, offers a distinct layout that seamlessly winds through moss draped oaks and towering pines on pristine Florida preservation land. You will enjoy the fact that there are no houses crowding the fairways. Located at the University of South Florida, this manicured course is home to alligators, deer, turkeys and many other rare inhabitants. You will feel like you are playing in the heart of a nature preserve. "The Claw" is also home to the nationally ranked men's and women's USF Golf Teams. Elevated greens and new Tif-Dwarf putting surface, will test your finesse and shot making ability.

Getting better
The Claw was somewhere I’d go last if I couldn’t find a tee time anywhere else. It’s getting better.
Beat up bad!!
Wow, had not played in over a year here but this course has been beat up, let go, and from tee boxes to greens totally suck!! IMHO
The “Claw”
The name fits: several very severe course traps that I didn’t expect. Course conditions were fair at best. Much work is needed to meet beach golf expectations.
What happened at The Claw?
Course appears to be in a decline in overall condition. Not sure what has happened. Did not know the clubhouse had closed down. Have not played in a year but very familiar with the course. Most tee boxes are chewed up. The fairways & greens were fairly decent in comparison. Price was nice compared to around town. Surprised the "claw" was still standing.
Edith
Fairways were very long and we were not aware of water hazards.
WHERE IS THE PRO SHOP
No pro shop or restaurant and also I have never been to a course where they park the carts at the entrance of the course and you park your car and walk to get it. Definitely not worth the price course has gotten worse and worse over the years and also rundown.
DO NOT PLAY HERE!!!!!!!!
Better than expectations
Went out on a Sunday hoping to practice. After letting a couple of groups play through. I settled in behind a guy teaching his gal to play golf. Took my time & still finished in about 4 hrs. No one pressed me after the first hole. Weather forecast was a little shaky, but ended up being a great sunny day. I think I paid $31. For a Sunday, I thought that was good. It's an old course. Wasn't in the greatest condition, but very playable. Greens & bunkers, very good. Ruff a little rough. Fairways & tee boxes ok & very playable. Even though it's not the most pristine golf course. It's a great layout. A good golf course. Lot's of fun holes. I like your fancy, hyped up country clubs. But for the right price. I'll be back. Had fun & got up close to a gator sun bathing.
Not worth the money
Specifically, The bathrooms are hideous. Nice, challenging layout but course conditions were not great. Hadn’t played in a while and I remembered why. I think there are better courses for similar dollars in the area.
They need to either tear down or fix up the clubhouse and cart barn. The barn, in particular, is an eyesore and looks like a strong wind would blow it over. You can literally see through the walls…lol… but really not funny. Not a good look with the USF name on it.
Better than expected
Not the greatest course, but definitely one of the best values in the area. I’ve played worse courses in Tampa for twice the price. Really my only recommendation would be to repair areas around the greens and fairways, if you miss you end up hitting off dirt/sand. Also, no bar/grill and very limited snacks in the makeshift pro shop during my visit. I hope this is temporary and the clubhouse will be reopening soon.
