The newly renovated Claw at USF, named thus for its many doglegged fairways, offers a distinct layout that seamlessly winds through moss draped oaks and towering pines on pristine Florida preservation land. You will enjoy the fact that there are no houses crowding the fairways. Located at the University of South Florida, this manicured course is home to alligators, deer, turkeys and many other rare inhabitants. You will feel like you are playing in the heart of a nature preserve. "The Claw" is also home to the nationally ranked men's and women's USF Golf Teams. Elevated greens and new Tif-Dwarf putting surface, will test your finesse and shot making ability.

Ok
Was hitting the ball off of dirt the entire day. Theres not a spot on the course we playable grass
Not worth the money.
Might as well spend $30 elsewhere.
Course was littered with carts that died in the middle of 18. No bathrooms.
Kind of a bummer knowing how great a course it was when I was in college. Spend some of that tuition money to fix it up.
Over priced
First time playing The Claw. I hear it used to be a nice course. It would appear that conditions have declined. The check in staff was nice enough, even though they were operating out of a trailer. Apparently the old pro shop/club house was condemned. We didn’t run into any other staff on the course. The course itself was challenging, but not well maintained and the greens were a little dodgy. I would say the round was worth about half what we paid for the round (we paid $30/player). The cart was also in bad shape. The upholstery was ripped and the steering wheel was difficult to operate (ie it was stiff and got stuck).
Noticeable improvements
From West Palm Beach, play here maybe once a month visiting my girlfriend. Tons of improvements since I played here over the summer. No holes under construction, proper rolling greens, nicely cut fairways. Love the design
Pace of play was a little slow, and the rough was well rough, but for the price its I’m starting to think this place is a little underrated! Hope the rumors of this place closing down isn’t true
Good course
Good course, but went on a rainy day so it was a little squishy. But overall good play, greens played fast, and the pace of play was great! The whole course plays long so bring a good distance game
A prize for the price
Much better than the last time I played there. Hate to see it go.
Absolutely Awful
What happened to the course. The staff was truly professional and apologetic for the problems. Ther were over 15 carts inoperable which caused us to have to wait over a half hour for get out on our tee time. as there were no carts available until the early morning players stated to come in. The course was in the worst shape I have ever seen it in in my 17 years of playing the The Claw. The staff is still located in a trailer and there is no signs of the building where the food service counter and front destk/pro shop used to be. Not understanding this as the football team has a million dollar facility. How long will it be before they close the golf course. No carts, no food facility, the staff relegated to a trailer and port a potties for the rest rooms…….
Potential
This course has lots of potential to be nice. It was super wet even though it hasn’t rained in two days and was cart path only. The course layout challenges even experienced players. The pro shop is in a trailer and the practice greens were terrible. Also on several holes the hole wasn’t on the green rather it was 50 yards in front on a make shift green and that information was not shared prior to the round. With a little bit of money invested this course could be nice, it has pretty scenery and is right off the USF campus. Until work gets done on the course I will not be returning
Needs work
The actual layout of this course makes it a challenge and very different from courses close by, other than that, it’s below average in every category. Quite possibly the worst greens I’ve seen and they get worse every time I play. As a USF alumni I like playing here, but I won’t be back until they invest in making this a course that is actually worth what they charge.
Terrible
- One of the tee box was so torn up that they set all the tee boxes on the edge of the fairway
- One of the green was so torn up that they set a temp green on the edge of the fairway in front of the actual green.
So much potential to the course, I can see that it is certainly a challenging course, but it is hard to enjoy it when the green isn't good, fairway is bad, broken trees everywhere, and just look like I am playing on a nicer cow field... not to mention the clubhouse is a trailer and the actual clubhouse is condemned. I have played on better courses for cheaper price than this. Hopefully they can fix it soon before the season start because I would go there again if things are better, but a lot of work ahead of them though.
Bad experience
Pro shop (conix box) staff were friendly. Cart attendant could not be bothered as playing on his phone was more important. Our cart died on the 7th hole and we had to push it with another cart back to the shop. They were out of carts around 11am and had 3-4 groups waiting around for more to come in. We were lucky enough to snag a replacement in the parking lot to finish the back 9. One hole is under maintenance and the green is temporarily on the fairway.
